When Covid hit, the class of 2020 who had for the most part in the country, no big graduation, started private Instagram pages for seniors to announce colleges. Most seem to be run by a student and not anything officially by the school. Not surprisingly, all girls or coed schools seem to be more on it than boys schools.
I had an older student so I remember with 2020 grads, the 2020 moms were losing their minds over what their students were missing out on, so they went bananas for all these other things, including making the Instagram pages. Since 2020 our boysâ school has done it, but fewer and fewer kids participate every year. I donât think we even have one yet.
But I get on other schools pages every day to see the latest scoop.
Interesting. If there were personal student (or parent) Instagram accounts announcing admissions, I would definitely NOT know about it. I know about the two accounts I mentioned, also the general school account, and the official accounts for various sports and activities. But nothing personal.
My kids attend(ed) two different private schools. Both schools are having banner years with the Ivies and T15 so far, best since 2021. Lots of unhooked kids, but would also say that legacy preference still a factor.
At our average low-income public school, there are only a handful of high achievers who might apply out of the CSU/UC system so they all know each other pretty well and news gets around quickly.
We usually get a kid to an ivy every other year, but not many apply. No EA or ED action at our school yet.
Ok, I spent some time sleuthing (work? Whatâs work?) There are two âclass of 24 acceptancesâ insta accounts, neither has any posts.
There was an unofficial account last year for people to say where they were going, iirc only a fraction of the students actually submitted to it (maybe 100 out of 350ish?). The overwhelming majority were planning to attend one of our in-state publics.
Catholic diocese supported high school in Riverside County, CA. Based on last years stats a lot of kids were admitted to four local universities (CBU, UCR, CSU San Bernardino, and University of Redlands); and most of the kids who applied there went to those schools. One or two were admitted to Cal Poly Pomona, and the University of LaVerne; no Claremont colleges. Outside of the IE bubble there were Cal Poly SLO, UCLA (like 2), Grinnell College, University of Virginia, University of Notre Dame, Michigan State, University of Washington, UC Davis, University of San Diego, San Diego State, UCSB, UCSD, CSULA, CSUF, Long Beach State, Sacramento State, Northern Arizona, VMI, Arizona State, University of Hawaii, Oregon State, and University of Oregon. I am sure there were more but these are the ones I can remember. The girl who applied to UVA, and Notre Dame ended up at UCLA. The kid who applied to Grinnell (a football player) ended up at University of Redlands. The kid who applied to Michigan State ended up at Washington for ice hockey. The girl who got into every UC she applied to (LA, SB, Riverside, UC Davis, and San Diego) plus Cal Poly ended up at UCLA. No one got into USC (or if they did they didnât post it on the school acceptance board).
S24 goes to a fairly small school, and the kids find out about their peersâ college results through word-of-mouth or via the private class instagram page (which is not school-sponsored and not accessible to parents). S24 is not a social butterfly and does not talk about college much with his friends but he still knows the results for most kids in his grade who applied ED. Apparently, there is a tradition that kids post an Instagram story celebrating any friend who is admitted to a college ED or commits to a college in the regular round.
The parents tend not to discuss college admissions at all, unless they are close friends. And the school never makes any official announcements - it just releases anonymous placement data at the end of the school year.
Thanks to the discussion here about school instagram pages I went and checked (never thought about it before). I found the pages for last year and this year. This year I only see 2 posted so far and one was for Upenn and another for cornell.
I know many more kids got into the T20âs (I know there were 2 Mit, 2 UPenn and 2 Cornell and 1 stanford, 1 cal tech and more that I am not aware of). I went to last year page and saw that about 75 kids out of 450 kids posted there so less than 20% posted there.
Now I will be sure to check that page frequently to see how things shape up for this class
C24 rejected from one of their two favorite schools. I really hate and despise audition-based admissions.
One more, non-audition, decision coming today. We really need some good news over here.
Donât know what type of audition based program but s21 was rejected from his two âdreamâ schools for acting before getting into the one he thought he had no chance with. It does work out. Hugs to both of you
Thank you! Yes, acting. Iâm going to keep reminding them that things will work out.
Iâve looked for an Instagram page for this year, but didnât find one. They have had them in the past.
Anyoneâs kid regretting putting their cell phone on applications and saying it was okay to text? A couple schools send quite a few texts and today one called her at about 2:30pm - during 7th hour. Her phone is on silent, but still. It seems a little much to call kids during school hours.
Sorry for multiple posts in one day, but I am sick to my stomach. C24 was just deferred from the school that was supposed to be their safety. They really love the school, it isnât audition based, and their stats are well within (GPA) and far, far above (test scores) the schoolâs average.
Iâm not saying this as a âmy kid deserved to get in, how dare the school not accept them!â kind of thing â I promise Iâm not. Itâs more of a âif they couldnât get into a school that was supposed to be a very safe safety, whatâs going to happen with all of the more competitive schools theyâve applied to?â kind of thing. Theyâre incredibly upset and worried, and I have absolutely nothing to offer them.
I feel for you @GirlDad ⊠my D was in the same position last year. Deferred by EARLY school and then decided against an ED2 (to, in her case, BC). We were super nervous about that decision, but kept it to ourselves because it was her decision to make. In the end, she got into EARLY school and many others in the RD round. I think sheâs making a solid choice by waiting, letting the chips fall, and then deciding among the options.
Feel free to message me. We had a lot of experience and I may have some thoughts. So sorry they had such a rough day.
I am so sorry. This just doesnât seem fair or right. I hope your C24 can get better news from another school.
Huge hugs to you and your C. I am so sorry it has been such a disappointing week. I do not have much insight. Was the shocking result from a school with holistic admissions or straight stats? Does C have a college counselor who can provide insight? Does C still have pending applications at schools they like or are they still applying? Is there anything that the board can do to help support you and/or brainstorm options?
Hugs to you. And your C.
A nice cocktail would not be out of place.
Maybe they are trying to âyieldâ her
My older kid had this experience also, rejected from their safety. It really sucks and I know it can just crush their confidence. I hope you are able to all focus on the opportunities still ahead and get some joy from the holidays. Hugs.
We are in the same boat here. Itâs been a tough couple of days. I will be rooting for your child and mine.
