DS got accepted to Centre too. I was surprised it was so early. Normally they come out in January. But congrats!
Iām a bit amazed at the early results from our tiny, rural, public HS. (Class of about 30, scarce resources.) Early acceptances include Duke (ED, hooked), MIT, Notre Dame (ED, hooked), American, Bard, and Pratt ⦠and this from a school where only about 20-30% go to college at all. Unfortunately, our D24 is in the RD wait and wait game, hoping for both acceptance and a huge aid package from one of our favored LACs. The kids share the info freely, and with such good news ⦠who can blame them. They are also posted on a brag board outside the advisors office ⦠with āentering workforceā by far the most common brag.
Of course. Enjoy the cocktail and share the details.
By early internship opportunities, I mean that I have close friends at mutual fund companies in Boston who have said she will have internships if she is at BC. It was be more challenging to get internships during the school year at other schools that donāt have as big of a business community around campus. Mutual Fund business is huge in Boston along with a great Bio and Tech community.
So I had been meaning to try a Tipperary variation with Dolin GƩnƩpy, and I ended up quite liking it! 1.5 ounces Irish whiskey, 1 ounce sweet vermouth, 1/2 ounces GƩnƩpy, two droppers of my Blood Orange Mocha bitters.
Less successful was my Weeski attempt. It calls for Lillet Blanc and triple sec, so I used Gran Gala. In this case I thought it overpowered the subtle flavors of the Lillet Blanc even with a small portion.
But that reminds me I wanted to retry it with Bauchant, actually my favorite orange liqueur, and a much lighter touch . . . and it is after noon, so I shall report back shortly.
Et voila! I should have known better than to mix Italian and French liqueurs. Bauchant worked much better with the Lillet Blanc, and in a fit of inspiration I used my Ginger bitters, since Irish whiskey and ginger ale is one of my favorite highballs. And this Weeski I now quite like as well. Definitely a lighter, more refined cocktail than my usual fare, but I think a very nice use of the Irish whiskey specifically.
And because no one can stop me, henceforth I will call this a Weeski BC.
I suppose that the Weeski AB is the slightly lower alcoholic content version?
Sounds plausible, but I wouldnāt know . . . .
Thatās about right!
How is everyone else holding up as the January deadlines loom? Unfortunately, S24 has been really sick over break and missed out on all our Christmas fun (boo). He has been working on his apps and got another one in yesterday (yay) but has 6 more to go (only 2 with Jan 2 deadlines). He has the goal of finishing one per day so weāll see how that goes . . . Hope all who celebrated enjoyed a nice Christmas!
My S24 has also been very sick over break and missed out on Christmas Day with the rest of us. He started feeling better yesterday and is trying to finish his last 2 applications (due Jan 1 & 5). He also has a big paper for AP Lit due Jan 10 (luckily he has a draft but Iām not sure how substantial it is ) so it looks like he used most of his time off being sick, and is going to have to work steadily for the next couple of weeks.
Sorry your son is in the same boat. There is something nasty going around - at least in Massachusetts. Iāve got it now although Iām not as sick as my son has been. Glad we didnāt have any plans for the break! Unfortunately, the rest of his break will be dedicated to essay writing . . .
Luckily, I am the holdover-sickest member of our family, after we were diagnosed with flu on the 22nd. The other two are pretty healthy now! Weāre all okay, and today is D24ās eighteenth birthday! In a few minutes, sheās going out with her friends to pick up every birthday freebie in town: a crumble cookie, a Moeās burrito, a Starbucks drink, a piece of cake from Publix, fries from WingStop, a freebie at Ulta, a mini-bundt cake at some bakery. They plan to share all these treasures. Tomorrow she can do her last two applicationsāthey arenāt difficult, with just one supplemental each.
A combination of S24 finally really feeling the time pressure (predictably it had to be within a week), and The Distraction (aka the girlfriend) heading to Florida with her family, seems to have created the conditions for some positive momentum.
Out of the ten RD applications that made the final cut (ouch), the two easiest have been submitted. There are four due 1/1 through 1/4, and those are all well in progress (although none totally finished). Two more are not due until 1/15, so I am not even worrying about those yet.
The last two, though, are due 1/5, and those concern me a bit as they have not yet been seriously started. So today I will see if S24 can get those started while also advancing one or more of the earlier ones further toward completion.
I always believe applications not completed say the student didnāt want to go to those schools enough to complete the application, so no harm no foul. Iām sure he will have choicesā¦and sometimes fewer choices make the decision easier.
D24 picked up some bug during a pair of work days last week and then missed all the XMAS activities. My father also brought something in to town with him and had to cut his trip short.
D24 has a few public honors applications to finish between now and mid January.
Yeah, if he decided last minute to cut some reaches (there are so, so many reaches), that would be fine with me.
To the extent I have a concern, it is just that I know he really liked one of his 1/5 colleges, and it is a target not a reach. So I donāt think he should cut that one, nor do I think he intends to, he has just been focused on the ones due earlier.
3 essays to write here for the last app due by 1/5⦠but the school is a reach and not #1 choice so Iām not terribly concerned.
D24 has 7 applications due between 1/1 and 1/8, with about 14 supplemental essays. And then another two due on 1/15 with about 3 essays. I brought her to my work and gave her an empty conference room to work on them. (No more messing aroundāIām officially Airwolfing this parenting thing for the next couple weeks.)
Small gripe: I wish there were more consistency between the supplemental essay information on a schoolās website and the Common App and SlideRoom. Weāve been surprised to find essays buried in the Common App that are never mentioned on a couple schoolsā admissions pages.
I mentioned above how I re-ran an NPC for Wesleyan and got a really good result. After more research, Iām now pushing it for D24 because I think itād be a really excellent fit for her. Sheās certainly interested, but not as much as Iād hope.
Anyhow, I am really, really looking forward to January 16. Thereās been a lot of talk of alcohol here, and I was gifted a few bottles of hard-to-find Nikka whisky to help me through the next few weeks. I also have a bottle of 26-year-old Bowmore (a very generous gift from a few years ago) waiting for the day in April that we submit a deposit.
