It’s available, it just might crash or freeze as they work out the bugs. Just like most new programs.
I’ve been trying to access on and off for hours without success. The links to access/cont the form are not working as there’s a large “system maintenance” banner.
It’s available unless you want to complete your FAFSA…
My favorite is they are telling people don’t worry you’ll have plenty of time!!!
As in don’t bother us we will get it working someday
Happy New Year, all! May this New Year make everyone’s hopes and dreams come true.
I almost started it last night because the buttons were present when I refreshed the site but my son looked at me with that warning look so I decided to wait.
I think I’m going to wait until next week because I’m not looking start it then have it crash on me on New Year’s Day when I can be sitting on the couch watching the HONEYMOONERS & TWILIGHT ZONE marathon. My husband loves the ODD COUPLES reruns. He switches the television channel back and forth during the commercials.
Families of admitted kids: This is not my first rodeo, but I am rather impressed with my S24 school’s parent FB group. Tons of info organized in files. This sort of thing varies widely across colleges, and so YMMV, of course. It’s not even an official group, but has thousands of members, has been around a long time, vets prospective members, etc.
I cant decide whether or not to join D24’s college parent facebook page. On one hand, I am sure there is tons of helpful information, but on the other hand, it’s time to let D24 take control, and I fear there is a little bit too much helicoptering and/or unnecessary angst/stress on some of those fb pages. When discussing with my college aged nieces/nephews, they have begged their parents to stay off the facebook parent pages.
Fair. Though just having access for browsing and searches doesn’t mean one needs to have posts show up in your FB feed or, gasp, post a question. Some of my older kids’ parent groups I have turned off for showing up in my feed. I just find it handy for looking for comments on hotels, off campus housing, real dorm photos, etc.
In this case, there are multiple files for cold weather gear, lol.
I also asked this in a Vassar-specific thread, but since it is time sensitive . . .
According to S24, Vassar has extended their RD deadline (originally it was today).
Just seeing if anyone else here can confirm that.
D24, who is not applying to Vassar, got an email saying they extended to January 7
I belong to the parents group for S21s school. It is a small conservatory so very few members. At times it is very helpful and at others it is hilarious. I can’t seem to find one for S24s ED school.
That’ll do! Thank you.
I rejoined FB just to get on the parent FB pages for D24 & S24’s colleges. I have found there is lots of info about hotels, off campus housing, and tidbits/ advice that could definitely be helpful. They are not overly active right now, not sure if that is the norm or not, but I heard from other parents they got lots of helpful info on the parent-specific FB pages.
@laceltris @NiceUnparticularMan -I don’t see that about Vassar? My D24 who is applying didn’t get that email and on their website it still says 1/1/2024
thanks! I wonder why my kid didn’t get it??
That is a good question I do not know the answer to. My S24 has an application in progress on Common App, and Vassar is also in the Applying bucket on SCOIR, so originally I was kinda assuming one or both of those triggered the email. But maybe that is not consistent with what is happening with others.
question that seems quite relevant this year: how many applicants do you think have used chatGPT prompts to curate their college essays?
Have heard from several parents of kids who have casually used chatGPT to either shorten/transform/generate comparable paragraphs of their essays.
One would assume that admissions departments screen for AI content, but their filter systems are still quite weak, and unable to identify with certainty texts which mix human text with AI edits
As some have pointed out, applicants have been getting essay assistance from “natural intelligence” for a very long time, and the question is really when does it cross the line from just getting help to actually no longer being the author. I think with college application essays in particular, even if you are never “caught”, the risks of not really being the author of your essays include those essays not actually being very effective in terms of their actual purpose. Which is not in fact to get a good “grade” as if this was an academic exercise, but to effectively paint a consistent and compelling picture of you as a unique individual.
So my guess is a lot of people will be getting help of one kind or the other or both, and some will cross the line, but most of those who do cross the line will not actually get any benefit out of doing so.
And I also think in the near future, that’s just going to be how writing works, meaning people will no more have a problem with judicious use of AI than they do with asking someone to read a draft and make suggestions.
