Parents of the HS Class of 2024 (Part 1)

or better yet:
my friend’s daughter wore a sweatshirt of a DIFFERENT college during her 1-on-1 session with Admissions.

My S24 (and S23 now that I think about it!) doesn’t even own a button down shirt, let alone a suit coat. :grimacing: He might have an interview or 2 coming up (the schools do them but not for everyone), so maybe I should think about acquiring one for him.

Right. That’s my point. You lose either way if you wear a college sweatshirt.
Same college - too presumptuous
Different college - oops

I don’t have any financial gains for sharing this:
we invested in this Bluffworks suit for DS2022:

  • washable
  • wrinkle-free
  • cool wicking
  • stain resistant

I don’t know about your kids, but my son has worn a suit more in the last 1.5yr than he’s ever (for fraternity stuff, interviews, etc).
We bought this Bluffworks Gramercy because he outgrew his other suit, and it’d be perfect for his Mexico summer internship.

My kid will only wear a button down shirt for school interviews, these scholars programs just felt a notch dressier, but apparently everyone else went full in with suit so maybe I am not best judge haha.

On a similar note, we received a mass mail postcard from a smaller college (honestly can’t remember who) that had a girl in a Notre Dame sweatshirt on it. Eek!

One of my strongest memories from my own college tours is the kid who wore a Dartmouth sweatshirt on the Hamilton tour.

My parents thought it was hysterical.

I’ve seen that a lot - I don’t think it’s a big deal. Kids also wear other college shirts on their own campuses.

I am curious if Princeton offers interviews to all/most applicants or do they do an initial screen similar to Yale? There’s not nearly as much info on the other Ivy interview process. Same question with Dartmouth?

I’m actually curious about UPenn and Harvard?

Yes, as long as they have an interviewer available.

Penn’s official statement is that applicants are not prescreened and interview offers are subject to alumni availability. Recently, they moved to virtual interviews which likely allows them to interview more applicants. My recent alum was assigned alumni conversations/interviews far outside of her immediate area. If the result is more applicants get interviews, then it was a positive change.

It’s funny b/c S24 is deciding b/w two SEC rivals and he said “once I decide I can’t wear the other stuff anymore unless I am home” :joy:

He’ll be surprised on campus - maybe not rivals but just the other day at my daughter’s school - and I’ve seen the same on school day - I saw a Gtown and Michigan sweatshirt.

At my son’s school - and it’s SEC - I’ve seen UF for sure and other schools.

I’ve seen them on tours.

No one is offended or going to make a note in a folder - turn them down.

If the school tour did its job, you’re off to the bookstore after the tour!!!

It was 1994, I think wearing a sweatshirt on a college tour was itself an odd thing. I was forced into pantyhose

Usually marketing vets images to prevent them from getting into the promotional stuff, though! Someone was in hot water for the mailer, I’m sure!

Ohhhh was this in a marketing piece ? I though the poster just made a general comment about wearing on a campus.

There were two comments, one about on campus, and one about a mailer (I wrote that one).

D24 is halfway through her midterms this week, has two apps and one scholarship app to finish and then the waiting begins. Looking forward to the end of apps, and hoping for a more relaxed final semester!!
