Parents of the HS Class of 2024 (Part 1)

Strikes me as a bit of an ego trip - wanting to collect acceptances from schools they aren’t planning to really consider attending.

I believe the kid who did 60 apps had a fee waiver and a lot of them were direct admit from a website, but still insane. My D24 did 19, which her gc wasn’t thrilled with, all EA, with 1 switched to ED2, her absolute # 1 dream, reach school- ran npc and if $ isn’t too far off, that’s where she’ll end up(hopefully). It comes in at the end of Feb, and is waiting on 4 more to come in before. By the time she gets a decision, all others will be in. So far only 1 rejection, 2 def. She is nursing, so mostly schools with direct admit, and the competion is crazy so I get why she had so many.

Good luck to these kids, and us parents too! This is the most stressful thing ever.

A question for in-person interview for scholarship. Does the student need to dress up?

S24 was selected and will be flying out for a scholarship interview next month. We are debating if he should be dressed formally, or just a polo with slacks.

My impulse answer is that you can’t go wrong with a suit. In my (old, gen-x) opinion, it shows that a candidate is really taking the interview seriously. But please know that I know nothing. This is my first time through the college process.

I agree. I mean, why apply SCEA or REA if it isn’t your favorite? I can see continuing on if the aid package isn’t to your liking, but if it is generous enough why bother with the rest of the apps?

Good luck to him!!

For the one in-person interview S24 has had so far (and it wasn’t for a scholarship) he wore nice chinos with a button down shirt, belt and good shoes (in our house that means, not sneakers). I think if it were a scholarship interview I’d add a blazer/sport coat to the outfit. Not sure a formal suit is required, but maybe someone with more experience can weigh in. And good luck!

I am thinking more of a business interview, so maybe a suit.

But i have seen posts from reddit and FB where some parents said polo would works too. Plus i think packing a suit might be a little too much for S24 to carry as he will be visiting other schools before the interview.

Thx Thorsmom66. Ahh i totally about forgot sport coat. Maybe that will work.

Check and confirm if it says, I want to say one of ours gave dress instruction. My child had a zoom semi last week and he was one of few not in a tie or suit. Told him to throw on a sport coat during intermission before actual interview. Given majority was dressed for earlier rounds makes me think yes. Good luck to them!

Definitely dress-up. My son went to one at a small private college. The invite just said no jeans or short skirts. The vast majority were in dress clothes, including all of the current students helping with the event. My kiddo still got a very generous offer, but he felt a bit out of place in khaki’s and a polo shirt.

Yes, the sports coat gives ultimate flexibility too. Easy to throw it on or take off depending on the vibe.

Thanks guys. Guess it’s time to upgrade the flight to allow overhead bin access! :grimacing:

Ok just spoke to son, it was Boston College, that requested him to change his application to ED2.

I definitely don’t want to be the subject of a reality show, but we are having to pick our “whirlwind visits” well! The good problem to have is that D24 applied to 14 colleges. Because of our need for merit, only one of those colleges appears in the US News top 30. Then there are a smattering of top 50s, top 75s, top 100s top 150s.   Look at how ridiculous this description looks! At least my daughter was very sure she wanted an urban environment of some kind. She hasn’t gotten rejected from a single school yet (those schools will respond in March). She’s gotten into 7 schools, and only one of them is not affordable at the moment. I’m glad that she applied EA to so many, because she’s been able to digest these results for weeks and come up with a top 3 of the ones she got into. There is one campus visit scheduled for mid-Feb, over 1000 miles away. Another campus is fairly accessible by drive. It’s going to be a long, crazy Spring! And I’m grateful–she’s a good student, but not one of the academic superstars on here. We didn’t know she would get into all these schools!

Please post an ‘actual results’ thread once this all ends. My D is similar, 3.85/4.1, no test. Good student but not a superstar
applying to mostly ranked #50-100. When I started on cc I didn’t see a lot of kids with these kind of stats, or for those schools. I bet a lot of people will value your experience

S22 was one of those kids (3.7/4.1, TO) and he got into most of the schools he applied to (all but one was 50-100).

Yep, my D is 10/10 so far
but the RD ones are tougher admits. She’s happy with at least two that are in hand so we feel pretty good.

This sounds like my kid’s list. They weren’t looking at rankings as they made their list, but were focusing more on what the schools offer for their very specific major, so the schools are kind of all over the place. None of them are closer than 250 miles from home (and most are a great deal further than that!), so they’ve only visited a few of the schools so far.

They’ve applied to (I think) 17 schools. Do far, admitted to 3, rejected from 2, deferred from 1. Realistically speaking, I think they might get into 2-3 additional schools, so I don’t think the decision process will be that bad.
