Parents of the HS Class of 2025 (Part 1)

I think it is just luck if it works out sight unseen. That worked for my DD23 with boarding school, not so much with college.

Schools disclose if they consider demonstrated interest, believe them.

I like to point out that my C19, not only was the first day of orientation the first time they ever set foot on the campus, it was the first time they ever set foot in the state.

(Mississippi State University, for the record. Absolutely loves it there.)

A small rural school like Hamilton is very niche. I think its harder to go into these schools without a visit than it is to a large state school, where you are likely to find a bit of everything.

We did actually visit once, for a tour. And it felt ok….. lesson learned though, tours can definitely be important. Or you can luck out.

Definitely check common data sets to see whether a school values demonstrated interest.

I’ve actually found the Uber selective do not care as much, and it’s the tier down especially if youre “high stats” where you need to demonstrate interest to prove you might attend, if accepted.

100%. My DD 23 got into 2 with 11-12% acceptance rates and a scholarship with a 5% acceptance rate at a great state school, but waitlisted at a private with a 50-something acceptance rate that tracked interest.

+1 on the ferry, though @dfbdfb if you go this route, I’d recommend booking ahead as some ferries/times do sell out

My S22 also did not visit his college campus before attending. His school is smaller (5000 undergrads) and halfway across the country and culturally very different from where we live. After an adjustment period he is fully settled in and loving it! Sometimes I think the visits are overrated.

Anyone else prom dress shopping? I am no prude. I’m super sex-positive. But the prom dresses make Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman look down right conservative. My pearls, I clutch them.

That is all.

I am attempting to make my daughter’s dress. She picked out the pattern and it is luckily pretty tame. I haven’t really seen what is out there this year.

I wound up sewing up the v neck on my older daughter’s dress. You could practically see her belly button before I did!

Why do they all have a thigh high slit and are deep V neck? I had good luck last year in a JC Penny section that looked like professional work clothes that happened to have a few formal dresses. It was like $60 too. This was after trying a bunch of other stores! We’re going shopping with my mom and sister when we go west during spring break. When I mentioned going my mom got really excited. She has missed doing things like this all with my daughter.

We only do senior prom at our school. I did see some decent dresses at Von Maur though if you have that store near you.

Who’s taking the SAT this weekend? I’m hoping it’s the last one for D25.

I think my D school is doing it tomorrow! I totally forgot until just now. I’m sure my D forgot too lol. She’s going in cold with plans to retake it in a couple months, it’s low on her priority list.

Juniors at my daughters school do ballgowns. She found hers online and ordered it. Spent less than 300. I call it a win.

My daughter is taking it for the first time. She prepped last summer but then had test centers close in Aug, Oct, and November. There hasn’t been much time during the school year for additional prep, so I hope this works out in her favor. She’s also registered to take one in June after AP and Final exams but I hope she doesn’t need it!

This is the way.

Plus, most prom dresses that are marketed as prom dresses are impossibly cheaply made, because they only have to last a single evening. Lesson learned from parenting multiple daughters: Look away from the prom section, both the clothes and the prices are better.

While I wholeheartedly agree with you, good luck convincing my junior!

My oldest daughter was practical and modest. Her dress was $99 with no cleavage and A-line. My younger daughter is giving me a run for my money. She’s the v-neck down to her navel type!
