It feels like about 800 more days of the school year here in NY…lol Last day of classes in June 13, so almost four more weeks, then Regents. The last one for my daughter is Chemistry (the class she’s struggling with of course :sob:) on June 20. Prom was last night! I can believe it’s almost senior year…..

Nope! it was waived in the post-Covid application cycles.

Got it. My '25 still took it.

I just booked our trip to Tacoma, WA for this fall’s audition. The school already posted the schedule for auditions and an open house. I think we’re skipping the open house on Friday and just do the Saturday audition. Between travel credits and flyer miles the airfare was reasonable, I booked one way tickets to take advantage. Booked a car and an Airbnb so she can rehearse as needed. We will spend 2 days checking out the zoo/acquarium, glass museums and restaurants around town. My mom and sister plan to drive up to meet us after the audition and we’ll get all day Sunday to visit before an overnight flight back. Luckily this is the only audition she’s planning on that is far enough away that it’s expensive to get to. The rest of the schools haven’t posted their dates yet. It just got really real!

Had our soccer banquet last night. SO glad that this season is over. It was rough with some horrific parent personalities. It was actually sad because her first 2 years on the team were wonderful. Everyone got along and we were closeknit. This year ruined that. I’m not even sure she wants to be on the team next year!

Thoughts about hiring an essay coach? Writing is such a chore for S25, and I would love for him to have some support and accountability. They are doing a week long essay prep thing at his school this summer, but it overlaps with his skeet practice two weeks before nationals. I would love to just outsource this, as I think we would come to blows if I was harassing him about it this summer. Any thoughts on where to find a reputable coach? (His school counseling office recently imploded, so they are not much help at the moment!)

My S got a 1310 as a sophomore with no prep whatsoever. He has taken it two more times since and it’s only gone up 10 points. I told him if he won’t study, not to bother with yet another retake. (He refuses to put any time into it AT ALL.)

Some private college counselors have essay coaches or at least ones they recommend.

Oh definitely. There’s no point at all to retaking it if you’re not going to put in the effort to the “test-taking skills” and dusting off the “Algebra II tricks” that you may not remember, after getting into calculus.

I ended up getting a tutor for my oldest, who was very offended. But then I pointed out how lucky they were that I was willing to do so just so they would make time. Otherwise, there was always a paper, a test, some club meeting….

Mine is the same with about the same score and he’s decided he doesn’t want to take it again. I’ve offered tutors etc but ultimately it’s his decision, so I guess he’s done

Which is actually a good place to be! It lets you make plans instead of feeling like you’re in stasis.

Did anyone here get a chance to attend the zoom session from Crimson Ed and CC? It was supposed to discuss class of 2028 results and trends. I missed it unfortunately.

We have hired someone as an essay coach for the two reasons you list: support and accountability. I am confident that D25 will be far more receptive to anything suggested by the coach than coming from me. That’s fine and I get it. We embraced that and engaged the outside resource. The jury is out as to their ultimate effectiveness (will let you know next March!).

We met with 3 or 4 coaches and D25 was a part of all of the interviews. She clearly responded better to the one we selected.

Thanks for the info! Hope it works well for her!

We found a writing tutor through word-of-mouth/family friends for S27. It was a worthwhile investment in his case because she taught him some foundational skills and tactics for crafting an essay that he did not have (and didn’t want to hear about from us). It definitely helped with accountability too, and the benefits have extended beyond just prep for one specific essay. At a certain point, their meetings became more of a chore for him (zoom gets tedious and it was less than ideal weekend scheduling for a 13-year old), but ultimately, he now sees it as time well spent.
S25 is a pretty solid and confident writer. We may hire the same tutor for some editorial work if he’s not amenable to our reviewing his essays though.
