How and why?
Unless D25 changes her mind about her top choice she’s planning on applying to an REA campus, so no ED1 here either. REA doesn’t really give an admissions boost like ED would, but both she and I really want the opportunity to compare financials.
At a philosophical level, because the one piece of power an applicant has in the process is the ability to choose where to matriculate. ED requires the applicant to cede that early in the process to a specific college.
And more concretely, there’s also the financial part of it—ED requires those who are reliant on financial aid (whether merit or need, it doesn’t matter) to make a decision committing them to attend without the ability to compare competing financial offers. Basically, it’s not a problem for those with significant means while presenting a potential problem for those who are less wealthy.
I could add more, but those are the two big ones for me.
Thank you.
Hillsdale. She loves it. It’s a whole different ball of wax than any other school when it comes to money. I don’t think they publish their % of acceptance ED vs. RD either. I’m pretty sure it’s her top choice. They publish their average amount of aid given but they don’t list any scholarship info really at all. We’re donut hole but that also doesn’t matter much for Hillsdale as there is no FAFSA for them and no gov’t money.
I think there’s no harm in asking if they’ll do a financial pre read for you. Many colleges will or will stand by their NPC.
Best of luck!
The older brother of S25’s classmate picked Hillsdale because he was looking for nice people and a good philosophy department, and it was a perfect fit for him.
Makes me wonder if I took my own small, Michigan LAC experience for granted, since people there were genuinely nice…
Hi. I was an early contributor to this thread when it began. During S25’s sophomore year things took a sharp and scary turn for him. I’m happy to come back here with a positive update. My son wound up moving to a new town with his father because his doctor at the time said a radical change was needed to help him move forward and heal. While I was devastated for to him leave, my desire for him to get better and feel better outweighed anything else. Sure enough that move is what saved my son and breathed new life and hope into him. He just aced the HISET exams and now has his high school equivalency and is enrolled in his local community college for the fall.
At the time when this was going on several of you sent me private messages offering hope, support, and real lived similar stories. Those words of encouragement helped me tremendously, so thank you!
My son is carving a path that works for him and he set goals and achieved them. I am so proud of him, and happy he made things work in a way that felt good to him. I admit it took me time to adjust to his new alternative path, but to finally be in a place of peace feels so good.
I wanted to share this update in case there are other families that need to hear that there are options out there and it’s ok to do things differently. At the end of the day, it always works out.
Cheers!
Yes, she fell in love with the people when we first visited. She also loved the classes she sat in on. The kids and professors included her in the discussions etc.
Picklenut6,
Thank you so much for coming back with an update! It sounds like you rose to the challenge and did what was best for your son. Hearing this story makes my day. Thank you again!
Well, that was interesting. We now return to our regularly scheduled program, already in progress
I def need therapy after this cuz what
. On college confidential is crazy. This could’ve been a Reddit post or something
Sorry I missed the drama (not really).
2 grad parties today. Both kids going to public in state options. I did talk to another mom though of twin class of 25 kids. Sad that as little as I know, I always seem to know more than most parents I talk to from our kids school. I was able to give solid recommendations of 2 out of state colleges my kids have personally toured that fit all they are looking for.
D25 is looking to do some quick senior photos in Atlantic City in August. Perhaps in NYC as well. Any photographer or places for pics recommendations?
Like Atlantic City New Jersey? Are you from New Jersey? My friends live in that area so I can shoot them a quick text to see where they are getting theirs done.

If the user wants recommendations via PM, that’s the only way.
Yes, NJ. We are from the midwest and thought beach senior pics may be fun.
