Parents of the HS Class of 2025 (Part 1)

I am starting to make pre-college doctor’s appointments for my D25. Other than Meningococcal are there extra vaccinations you have on your list for your kiddos before college?

Not before college but I would encourage a flu shot when available at school. My D23 decided she just didn’t have the time and missed a week of school with Flu A.

She also managed Covid, Strep, and a nasty case of bacterial tonsillitis, all her freshman year. It’s a minefield in those dorms!

Did she have an air filter? Just wondering how well those things actually work.

She did not, I’m not sure if it would have helped or not. More sleep and less junk food probably would have been beneficial but most of us have that one kid that has to learn things the hard way.

FWIW D23 had an air purifier in her double and only got sick once all year- and she and her roomate got sick at different times (not from each other).

Personally, I think it helped!

Not a vaccine but we sent S23 off to college last fall with a couple of boxes of Narcan. He works as a lifeguard and is very comfortable jumping in when people are in distress, but really, they all should have it. It made me more comfortable knowing it was there, and even more relieved that he never needed to use it!

I am just starting the process of college medical prep. D25 just got her wisdom teeth removed last week and she met with a doctor for getting long term birth control in place. It takes a month for the insurance to approve it and we’re a couple weeks in. Next I’ll look into what vaccines each school requires and request any she doesn’t have during her physical.

D25 had a slight panic over her schedule today. The registrar called her into the office because of an issue. Luckily, it was just her Spanish class that conflicted for AP Chem and her Spanish teacher had already told her she could take Spanish 4 instead of Spanish 3 if she needed to. Good news is Spanish 4 is weighted so her GPA won’t be brought down as much as a regular class.

Her schedule is now:
AP Lit- 1 point weighted
AP Chem- 1 point weighted
AP Psych- 1 point weighted
AP Stats- 1 point weighted
Biomed- medical innovations- .5 weighted
Spanish 4- .5 weighted
Leadership (1st semester)/Economics (2nd semester) no weight.

Hopefully she can get her #1 rank back. She was #1 until this year when a transfer student came in, took mostly study halls plus 2 AP’s and an honors class and had no other grades to average in from previous years.

So glad you were able to find a solution! We still haven’t been able to work out the issue with S25 and the schedule conflict with Spanish 2. He will likely take it through dual enrollment, but we haven’t heard final confirmation from the counselor yet.

And to add to the fun, S25 has decided he wants to switch to Japanese and continue it in college. Well, that would mean one year each of two languages, which won’t fly at most schools. So he is trying to decide if he wants to study it on his own this year.

I dropped him at Rose-Hulman yesterday for 11 days at their Operation Catapult camp. It was a sneak peek into college drop off, as he basically pushed me out the door before the parent orientation. I decided to just leave and make the 5 1/2 hour drive home rather than add to his anxiety with my own nerves. He texted last night that he was having fun and meeting people. I’m trying to sit on my hands and not text for updates. It’s going to be a rocky adjustment for me when he flies the nest!

My S25’s good friend is at Operation Catapult too and I heard the kids are already pranking each other.

Can’t wait to hear how it goes! Will he be applying to that school?

Yes, I think he will, as long as he has a good experience at the program. He texted this morning and said he really likes Rose so far and feels comfortable. He can be pretty shy before he gets to know people, so I’m glad he’s put himself out there to do something uncomfortable.

Our D23 is a film student at Emerson and applied to all the schools on your list except LMU. We found the application process very overwhelming. Putting together the portfolios and all the extra essays and film projects was a lot of work and time. In hindsight, while she was accepted to many top film programs, I wished she had applied to fewer schools because it would have been a less stressful time in our household.

I take a break and 136 new posts!

S25 has been at Flight Academy for 1.5 weeks and soloed Wednesday. So excited for him, he is loving it, and doesn’t mind all the studying and 4 hours of ground school 6 days a week. Because “it is stuff I am actually interested in”. He squeaked out 7 A’s and 1 B, despite coming down with a stomach virus during finals week and having to go in just for a final when he still wasn’t feeling well (AP Euro- but he aced the comprehensive final. He ended with a B, but this leads me to believe he could have pulled off an A, he didn’t really figure out how to study for this class effectively until his sister gave him some tips late in the final 9 weeks)

He had one week before leaving for Flight School, in which he started all of his Service Academy Apps and communicated with all of his letter writers and got organized on what he needs to do for his Nominations. His JROTC Instructor sent him his LOR and it’s amazing (my daughter’s were all blind, so it was fun to read one).

D23 leaves in a week and we won’t see either kiddo until Aug. 2. They will both miss my family’s bi-annual beach trip, so sad about that.

August will be a mad scramble in the college app front.

Sounds like he’s doing fantastic! D25’s friend leaves for basic next week. I think it’s Air Force Acadamy. From what I hear she will be dropped in the woods with no technology for several weeks. She shared her address with all of her friends, so she’ll hopefully get some letters. I know my daughter is planning to write her. It will be a big adjustment for the girl who is one of the last people I would have expected to do this.

Anyone else in NY have a kid telling you that the Chem Regents was super hard?! Or is it just my kid setting the stage for bombing it….:sob::woman_facepalming:t3: And least it’s DONE! Our high school’s graduation is tonight, so it feels like the beginning of the 2025s actually being SENIORS!!

What are the regents? I’m in the Midwest and we don’t have that. I’ve been curious for a while so thought I’d ask.

I think it’s just the two different types of meningococcal vaccines (2 doses each) but your pedi will know!

My C20’s college mandated flu vaccine annually once matriculated, but that would be fall.

My c25 also did narcan training & was given a box to bring home.

They are tests the entire state takes and I don’t know all the details but you have to take and pass a certain amount for certain types of NYS diplomas? The process has changed a little since I was in high school, but I definitely remember the chaos of studying for the Regents in June back in the day lol. It used to be 20% of your final grade but now I don’t believe it is. It may be district specific. My husband is a teacher so I know for US History at least it does not count toward their grade in our district. Someone I know told me Physics does? I haven’t dug into learning the details to be honest.

Whether not it counts toward the class grade is teacher/school specific, but I believe for science classes kids have to complete a certain amount of labs as well. Every core subject has an associated Regents exam at the end of the year. I thought Regents were exclusive to NY state, but maybe not. Depending on the number of Regents kids take and their scores, kids graduate with a Regents diploma or an Advanced Regents Diploma. The high school diploma awarded by the NY State Education Department IS the Regents Diploma.
