yes you won’t know the full financial package until after you fill out the FAFSA. Some people didn’t even know until end of May (or later) what financial aide they got for this year because of the FAFSA delay.
Right now C25 has interviews scheduled for Lewis and Clark, Macalester, and Bowdoin. Their list is almost all LACs.
Update on the list: in a five-minute conversation with S25, he couldn’t name a single reason why College of Wooster was more appealing than Macalester (or even as appealing). And he talked about how living in a city is great because you can walk/bike/take transit everywhere, and you can find cool restaurants and game shops and get easy access to internships. He was soliloquizing about urban geography. I have no idea what in the beginning caused him to remove Mac from his list – I think maybe it just wasn’t as pristine as St. Olaf? He had an annoying student tour guide? Anyway, it’s back on the list, as well as Case Western Reserve and Pitt. 2/3 are long shots, probably, but my intuition says any of those could be a good fit.
We just spent the night at Bowdoin and I loved it…mostly for college-adjacent stuff like the amazing lobster roll food truck and the good coffee/used book/gear swap stores. Psyched for your kid!
When we visited CWRU with my S22 I fell in love with Cleveland. Which is a decidedly weird sentence to write. But there were great neighborhoods and food markets to visit not far from school, we had a blast down at the Lake and it was just so much better than I expected.
I hit post too soon… Same thing with visiting Pitt with S22 - I don’t know what I expected from Pittsburgh, but it wasn’t to really really like it, which I did. When I went back to Pitt with S25 he was just taken by the city, the bridges, the restaurants etc. (Note, none of that actually relates to THE SCHOOL, but whatever…) He’s got Pitt pretty high on his list and I’m a little nervous about that. Given everything he’s said he wants from a college, and the intangible things he’s been prioritizing, I actually don’t think Pitt is a great fit. But he liked Pittsburgh so much that he’s not really thinking about any of that.
I have always heard not to include one unless it adds info that is not elsewhere in the application.
Daughter has applied to 5 schools and 2 are auto admits with GPA. She will have options and I think that helps.
She’s at her first big dance competition of the year this weekend.
Wait, wait, I thought she wasn’t dancing this year. Did I confuse your D25 with someone else? And congrats on already submitting 5 applications! Well done!
What did she think of NJ? Did you get the stormy weather or the blazing sun?
D25 submitted her first application! She got an email from NAU inviting her to fill out a free expedited application and offering an $8500 WUE scholarship. I said, ‘Why not?’. NAU is actually closer to us than some in state UCs/CSUs and Flagstaff is a nice town with 4 seasons! Took about 20 minutes. Should hear back within 2 weeks. I think completing this and setting up the portal is helping her get more ‘into’ the process.
My S has had one interview as well, on recommendation of the track coach. Otherwise he would probably have avoided it altogether lol.
She is dancing but just on her hs team, not 2 teams like other years (hs and studio).
The apps were high acceptance rate no essay colleges!
We have 3 interviews down. One to go. Still no applications in, but I think she is planning to do her part this upcoming week so they are ready for the HS to process their part in September. She is only applying to schools “I will absolutely love to go to”.
So we have no idea what the number is. We have decided to take a back seat and just observe and give advice when asked. But man its hard!
Today is finish your essay day! It will be her 4th draft and then she’ll send it off to one of her teachers to read. I need her to get this done before school starts on the 21st. I just know how busy she is about to be!
Today is UC PIQs due to Mom by 8pm…It might be close.
Trying to figure out how to prioritize the following for the kid: writing some of those essays for EA/ED schools, studying for the September ACT, finishing their summer projects/reading, and working on their college art portfolio. Meanwhile, they just finished their summer program and they are TIRED and need a break.
My S25 is done with his summer job, my S22 is also done with HIS summer job - he’s been gone working for 12 weeks. I get him for 8 days before his junior year of college. I do not particularly like this preview of future life when I don’t see my guys for months, but I’m working on being grateful for what I’ve got. I have to work Monday, but then we’re taking the rest of the week for a little vacation. I can’t wait.
D25 got her common app essay done. She will not submit it to one of her teachers to look over. She also got her “why” short answer essay done. 2 more short answer essays to go for the one school. I’m hoping she finished those today so she can be done with all of this for a while.
She also finished her summer reading.
Did you really mean “not” or was that supposed to be “now”. I don’t normally ask about typos as I probably have several in this post alone, but this statement seemed odd and I was hoping that you would clarify.
D25 just finished her summer reading as well and is working on a powerpoint presentation that she must give the first week of school on one of the books.
You must be excited for her - I am just a little envious of how far along she is!
