I hope so but I don’t have high hopes even for my D25 to score well on the Chem test. No one in last year’s class got higher than a 3 on the exam while getting an A in the class. D25 will be studying on her own with a review book all year to try to score higher. A lot of the kids that have previously taken the AP classes are opting for an easier senior year and just taking regular classes, with the exception of AP Psychology.
I’m so sorry to hear that. The pressure is intense on these kids. I often think of my friend whose son died the same way just weeks prior to his graduation from Texas A&M where he already had a secured a job in chemical engineering and had a girlfriend. I can never understand that.
NYC and Nola are so radically different. I personally love both but would much rather live in Nola as a middle aged adult. I might have a different opinion if I were young. I do love NYC but it’s SO expensive. Houston has the same diversity as NYC but on a much more affordable budget.
DePaul is too close to home she says but perhaps I could get her to take a look.
S has his first day of school tomorrow. He has a very rigorous schedule but has quit his fall/winter sport to focus on his spring sport for which he is currently in the recruiting process. He has three colleges with positive pre-reads + coach support and I suspect two more coming. Very thankful because I think this will keep him focused and motivated both academically and athletically and he knows if he messes up, those offers will likely disappear. Sadly he and his GF just broke up so he’s a bit glum and cranky.
So being recruited at 5 schools? Will he be obligated to ED at one of them?
Sorry to hear about the relationship.
So far they have all said no ED required. He has friends with exploding offers in other sports so feeling very thankful. He thinks he is going to have a phenomenal senior season so really doesn’t want to commit binding anywhere.
Maryland, Ohio State, and to a lesser extent Pitt to name a few.
For interviews, is a dress ok to wear or should she stick to slacks and a blazer?
I was an alumni interviewer for a T10 for decades. We were explicitly instructed not to pay attention to student clothing! Most kids wear a nice shirt, sweater, pants or dress. But some wear a plain t-shirt. I would say as long as it’s clean and doesn’t have graphics or words on the top, she’s good, and I would avoid workout gear, but some kids will wear it and it’s fine. Blazer completely unnecessary, unless it’s a special program where you think kids will be expected to dress.
I agree with Elpsaa. I did alumni interviewing for two decades and I explicitly told students not to worry about what they were wearing. Plenty of kids met with me straight from school. I think as long as it’s clean, neat and not a t-shirt with something offensive, it’s all good ; )
D25 received notice yesterday that she earned Rural and Small School recognition from the College Board. Should she put this under academic awards on the Common App? Is it considered a ‘national’ award? I think the Common App asks the level.
I will ask D25 if she is going to put it down and if so, where.
I don’t think I would characterize it as a “national award”. Its more of a recognition of meeting some predetermined parameter (I think it can be either AP course related or PSAT score related) and a geography parameter. The AOs would likely glean this from the transcript and other information in the application even if your D25 didn’t put it down. I think the College Board has a program called Landscape that provides much more granular geographic and socioeconomic information about your D25’s school district.
But, it certainly wouldn’t hurt to put down. I would look at it more along the lines of National Honor Society.
D25 picked up her junior year Yearbook yesterday while at school prepping something for the upcoming first day. One of her friends saw it lying on the table and asked to look at it and immediately said “Whoa, nice picture”. Turns out that D25 has a solo 2 page spread (one picture) on the inside cover and facing page.
Yes I would totally list it under national awards.
Congrats! S25 earned this recognition as well. He will list it, but not sure where yet, since pinning him down to start filling out those sections of the common app has been… a challenge. But the start of preseason tomorrow means he’s finally getting his brain fully back into school mode, so I am more optimistic that he’ll make some headway on that before classes actually start in 10 days or so.
What size school does she attend?
A dress is fine. I’d say almost anything goes. C25 has been wearing a short sleeved button down with a subtle Nightmare Before Christmas pattern. lol
It’s about 1200 students, there are around 300 -350 in each class. I think her school qualifies under the rural part. We are 100 miles from any major population area. And I got the name wrong in my first post, it is Rural and Small Town, not small school.
ok. My D25’s school is about 300 students total, but we definitely aren’t rural. I was wondering why my D didn’t get recognized for small school. lol
