I know this is not what I was supposed to take away from your post, but I always thought that pneumonia was not contagious. I am clearly wrong about that.
Love that ice cream was in the cards though.

My shy kid who never seemed to take risks throughout high school won spirit day today! The theme was “anything but a backpack” and he showed up to school lugging his supplies around in a giant old microwave that he found in the garage. His physics teacher is planning to put it in his rec letter. So today I’m grateful that we are so behind the curve on things like rec letters. Huzzah!
The most common kind of pneumonia is bacterial and it isn’t contagious but viral pneumonia is!
Yeah, like Izzy said, this appears to be one of those very weird viral versions. And people are getting it quickly, so it’s making the rounds through school super fast.
Lindenwood sent her stickers! She was very happy (as she likes mail, not just emails.)
She is a bit worried because on paper this school has much of what she wants. But she admits that she’s learned that some look okay online but then she just doesn’t “feel it” on the tour. Of the 3 schools she’s liked on tours (which we have visited more than a handful now), only 1 has the academics and potential financial fit as well.
Same, my kid has given me access just to help make sure all the boxes are checked and to help manage the stress of it all.
Stickers automatically shoot the college up my kids list. That is what we try to buy at the bookstore after tours.
Thanks for the reassurance–I can only see one school so far that is November 1 or bust (UMD). It is an EA deadline only, but I worry that if you select EA in Common App, would it not rollover to RD if the docs aren’t in?
UMD is a special case. Not only is it EA deadline of Nov 1 or bust, but they fill like 90% plus of the incoming class from EA pool. So yes, it would roll over to RD but your application enters a much more competitive pool.
No. Will no roll over to RD if the school doesn;t submit supporting materials before the first. As long as the student submitted the Common App by the deadline it is fine if the school does not send the materials until a few days after.
OP - its always good to verity with the school. We did have an instance of the school submitting (I could see on Scoir) and the college not receiving until it was resent. We had to alert the CC of the issue.
I do not believe that is correct for UMD, which is what the OP asked about. We just went through applying UMD last year — we were advised by UMD admissions office to ask a teacher to send a recommendation by email before deadline when naviance had a glitch — and there are tons of posts in past UMD threads by students whose supporting documents weren’t received by the deadline. Their applications moved to the more competitive RD pool.
But yes, always best to contact the admissions office directly.
If that is the case, my apologies, but SO many students don’t apply until 11pm on the deadline. I don’t believe they are penalized.
Still, if that is the case OP can nudge their CC and if it’s a concern, email UMD about it.
My brother-in-law went to Lindenwood back when it was still just a college. It used to be somewhat of a commuter school. It’s in pretty area. Main Street St Charles is nice and they are building up the area. There is a bit of a “personality” divide between St Charles County and St Louis County.
We’re having a tough time with the photographer we hired for her senior pictures. We paid $$$ for them and absolutely love what the photographer did artistically for the shots. The problem is with the editing. I can’t tell how bad it is but husband and D can. D blew up a picture and showed me some specifics. H talked to photographer and she doesn’t see it as a problem but will sell the raw files for another $1000 so D and H can edit themselves as he asked. It’s just too much money though. Photographer will make some adjustments per H request and get back to us. I’m so disappointed. I was really excited about these beautiful pictures but now H doesn’t even want them displayed in our house.
S25 just got an MIT interview scheduled with a local alum…for tomorrow! He’s nervous/excited but I think we both thought that when an interview was scheduled, it would be with more “notice” so he would have more time to think and prepare. He doesn’t feel prepared at all, but I’m sure it will be fine. Maybe it’s better to not to have it hanging over him, with the possibility of worrying about it for longer.
I think way better to not have it hanging over him. I’m just thinking about when my son had to set an interview for a summer job - if he could’ve done it the next day it would’ve been so much better rather than the two weeks that he was alternately dreading it and worrying about it.
For you, I think you do some preparation over dinner tonight - ask him some questions like why do you want this school, what excites you about the program you are applying to you, tell me about yourself, what’s an accomplishment that you’re really proud of, what matters to you as you are trying to decide on the right school etc.
Hi- my S23 did an interview w MIT when he applied, if you’d like, I can send you a doc w/sample interview questions (several were ones his interviewer asked). He will do great- sometimes it’s best not to have too much time to get nervous/overthink things!
I work for a Jesuit but am not religious. Somehow letting my kids decide on religion has one being neutral, the other being an atheist, and the last one (D25) quite Christian. There’s a few colleges and areas I would likely not be comfortable with but she’s the one going there. She has to feel safe and happy with her decision.
We would love to see the doc with the sample interview questions! Thanks, @cacmom
Well, all S25’s essays are written, but hit a snag on his film portfolio. He had a class assignment that he was excited about and was planning on using that in his portfolio, but he just got it back from the editor, and it wasn’t as good as he hoped, and the editor doesn’t have time to correct them before the submission date (also apparently the raw footage is gone now as well).
He still has a pretty good example, but he wanted one more, and he’s now learning the “joys” of group projects.
