Parents of the HS Class of 2025 (Part 1)

Oh no! That is so sad. I know my son experienced something similar when he worked with an editor and the raw files and all of the drama. At least he has another work he can show, which puts him ahead of a lot of kids. As another film parent, I just wanted to lend emotional support. Wish I could be more helpful. Good luck to him! Maybe our kids will end up classmates.

Did you reach out to each school to ask? Or could you find it on websites? (I’ve been putting my head in the sand about this. Well, ok, I reached out to two schools. One respond “doesn’t matter” and the other hasn’t.)

Update here: So…filming for these pre-screens is not going smoothly. If things don’t improve dramatically over the next 48 hours she is likely to move a bunch of the EA auditions/prescreens to RA. This makes me sad for a variety of reasons, but mostly bc it means this already long process with needing to get two admits for (almost) every school gets drawn out even further. Note to self: this is not my life, not my decision, not my circus (except that I seem to be attending and sitting with the monkeys).

I love how YOU got the ice cream. I think I’ve been going about this all wrong! I also love seasonal treats!

Okay, my son has 10 EA applications in, including 18 supplemental essays (!!!). He also had to upload films, portfolios, resumes, etc. But he was jamming in those essays.

On offer for trade: any 3 supplemental essays for 50 math SAT points. Any takers? Ha ha.

He is all set for the 11/1 deadlines (one common app wo essay) and has 2 more applications (and supplemental essays!) for some favorite schools due 11/15.

I like the idea of him taking a personal day at some point. He could really use one!

Congrats! What wonderful success for your daughter!

Same boat. And our in state school is strict about all items being in by deadline, even those out of her control. So frustrating!! Only good thing is that js likely among last choice.

D25 has a rare night of no homework. She should be working on application essays, etc. Instead she is watching the World Series. Priorities! Go Dodgers!

Well the teacher said she finished it. In Naviance it now says In Progress instead of Requested, but the letter from the other teacher says Submitted. Not sure if the teacher needs to do something else or if it will submit.

Honestly, I just googled “does X require css for merit”. The results all stated that their merit awards were based on the admissions application. I did not dig further than that. Her ED school and lone RD school require the css for need but provide no merit money so we will not be submitting the css for those even if she is admitted.

Check to make sure they have completed their Naviance profile (or something like that). S25 had a teacher’s rec listed as In Progress for weeks. It turns out he had to update some of his info for it to submit to schools.

Thanks! He does have one that he likes a lot that he and some friends did on their own. He actually decided to submit both b/c it allowed him to write about his submissions, and he was able to talk about what he liked about it and the lessons he learned from it even though he knows it has flaws.

Where is your son applying? My kid has a very thin list b/c he also wants to study Korean, and he only wants to apply to place in Virginia, California or near family. So he’s only got George Mason, VCU, Arizona State, Loyola Marymount, Cal State Long Beach and Cal State Northridge. We’ll see how it goes.

I feel like I’m having deja vu, so maybe I’ve already said this at some point (if so, forgive me!) but random FYI - a work colleague had two daughters who went to George Mason, one ended up a Korean major or minor. She LOVED the program. I know she did at least a semester abroad in Korea during school and now that she’s graduated (I think in 2023?) she’s got a great job working in Korea and is loving her life. So from a very tiny sample size, I will say the Korean program at GMU seems to be great.

Thanks, that’s great to hear.

I think George Mason is my favorite. We know someone in their arts department, and as you said their Korean program is really, really strong. Their film program is pretty small, but they have invested some more money into it recently. It’s also close to home and we get in state tuition. Basically it checks all the boxes.

So, I’ve been watching this thread because I have a S25 who is currently applying, and I want to keep on top of things…but I have never posted, so hi!

I wanted to comment about the film major applications and supplements. My S23 went through that, and it is a beast! My advice is to just let everything play out and then reassess at the end of everything. S23 was doing supplements and portfolios until early January. He was completely spent (and then had major senioritis afterwards!) He was pretty sure that he wanted to do film, but he also applied to some more interdisciplinary art programs at larger schools as well. Well, at the end of March, he had the surprise of his life when he got into a very small BFA program at NYU that was interdisciplinary in nature. He loves it! He is taking classes he never thought he would and has been exposed to so many more things than he ever thought he would. NYU was not his first choice, but by the end of his senior year, it ended up being the absolute right choice for what he wants to do in life.

So, as hard as it is right now, just stick with it…all of this hard work will pay off and they will soon be in the right place to let their creativity shine!

DadBodThor - My filmmaker son is applying to DePaul, Syracuse, Chapman, Ithaca College, Hofstra, Quinnipiac, LMU, Fordham, St. John’s, Marymount Manhattan, Emerson, and perhaps a few more RD if none of these pan out. I went to CSULB and loved it - so he may be adding that and CSUN as well - both highly rated as I know you have seen. Good luck to the kids!

Does the student or teacher need to update their profile? Thanks.

Our Naviance is set up so that the college counselor has to approve and submit the recommendations, so it may be that?

According to our GC, the teacher needed to update their profile before the recommendations could be submitted. Not sure in your specific case, but that’s what happened with ours.

So in today’s edition of “sweet lord, your grades would be better if you’d just turn things in on time” I can report that with 1.5 days left in the quarter, S25 has two grades that are JUST on the line. At our school an 89 is a B+, a 90 is an A (there are no “minuses”). S25 currently has an 89.6 in not one but two classes. One teacher is recording it as a B+ the other is rounding it up to an A. We’ll see if it stays that way - both if the B+ teacher decides to round and if the grades don’t move. I think there is one more assignment to be graded in the class where he has an A, so that could pull him either way. The class where the teacher is calling it a B+ there’s no more grades to enter.

Ironically, I would’ve expected the class where he’s getting the B+ to be the easiest of his academic classes this year. Also ironically, that’s the one class where he’s turned in everything on time - he just hasn’t done particularly well on tests (this is the kid who almost always tests well, but is abysmal at turning in homework on time, and tends to get downgraded for not fully completing non-test assignments).

I was hoping he’d pull out A’s in both of these, as I’m guessing his top choice school is going to ask for mid-year grades (if he isn’t outright rejected). But you live and learn, and if he doesn’t get in, well, then it’s not the right school.
