It kind of drives me crazy that GPAs are treated as if they were a standardized metric although they are not, even within the same high school.
ME TOO I see facebook group members telling others their kid has no chance because of some GPA and the CDS data.. Like a 3.4 can’t possibly get in because CDS or website says middle 50 is 3.7-3.9 or something. Obviously CDS is useful data, but idea that you can literally decide anything based purely on that is silly… What school you attend matters too…(level of rigor of HS, grade inflation if you have rank or not..)
It’s been a week since my last post on this thread and I am happy to report that I have kept my promise to step back. S25 is still waiting on his LOR and I hope the essay is done, but I am not asking.
I am an athlete (like my kids) so my way of coping is training for 3hs/day. I’m going to level up after the application season for sure
Thanks!
Than you. Amazingly, SRAR responded to my email within 10 minutes saying they could link the two email accounts on their end.
Yeah—my kid is in a 100% DE program (regular college courses taught by college faculty on a college campus) and the school district here doesn’t weight any of those, so since C25 started the program with above a 4.0 WGPA, every college class taken where an A is received lowers the WGPA!
And do AP classes get an extra .5 or 1? Are honors classes weighted? And so on.
Meanwhile, somehow it’s impossible for most people to realize that the GPAs reported by colleges for their admitted classes are based on their recalculated GPAs, not what appears on the HS transcripts they receive. There are only a few cases where the transcript on your GPA is what colleges use (though some admittedly are significant, like Alabama’s stats-based scholarships).
Do you think this leads to gpa’s colleges report being higher or lower overall than actual HS gpa’s?
I’m a little worried- I haven’t heard of the SRAR. My son filled out his grades on the common app and his GC will send his transcripts this week. How do you know if the SRAR is needed? Does it ask for it on the common app?
The college portal will tell you it needs to be submitted after you apply. Or you can google each school and see if they require it. Schools require the srar in lieu of official transcripts and do not require official transcripts until the end of the school year.
It’s usually big state schools, and not all of them:Which Colleges/Universities Accept The SSAR/SRAR? – Support Center
Thank you!! I asked my son and he said none of the 5 schools he’s applied to so far have required it. I looked it up and confirmed it. The 2 schools he is finishing up tomorrow do require it though, so I’m glad I found out about it today!
Lower, I suspect. People talk about grade inflation, but really what I’ve seen from what people call “high-achieving” school districts is grade weighting inflation.
I think it depends on the high school grading system. My daughters high school only gives 4 pts for a 97 or above, I believe a 90 is 3.5, but I hear a lot of schools give 4 pts for a 90. I would hope a recalculated college uwgpa would be higher for her but who knows
Thank you!
Both my husband and I had to travel for work this week, but kiddo just confirmed that she got her final app submitted tonight
Five applications, two acceptances so far.
I’m so thankful D25 submitted all of her apps 2 weeks ago. So many people freaking out about today’s deadline on Facebook. She has made no progress on her scholarship/honors college stuff though (unless you count asking the alumnus she needs for a recommendation). I think there is one scholarship due on the 15th and everything else (so far) is due by December 1. She NEEDS to get it done this weekend though for my sanity. lol
She has been thoroughly enjoying all of the “last” fall sporty stuff. We have had several teams competing in record breaking (for our school) play offs this week.
I think the problem with this is that each school is so different. My son’s private school reports numerical grades on report cards, where 90-100 is considered an A, but they report the actual number. Whereas the public schools report letter grades, so if a students shows an A, it’s just an A. No pluses or minues. How each college recalculates these grades is another issue, and they also vary greatly! At one school is recalcuated grade is 4.25, but at another school it’s just over 3.8. I appreciate the schools that are transparent on their website on how they recalculate, but not every school is.
Grandparents need to stay in their lane. They got to make their choices and now your son gets to make his.
agreed. It’s totally out of control. The whole “My kid has a 10.6 gpa. Do you think he can get into UGA?” I mean, come on-- this is ridiculous.
5 EA apps submitted, woohoo ! Next up is an honors supplement by 11/15 and one more oddly late EA app due 12/1, which is finished except for essay review by me. I’m quite honestly wondering how much motivation we’ll have left for the couple of RD apps due in early Jan. D25 has some solid EA options that I think are great fits, so this is exciting! Here’s to having a bit of breathing room over the next 6 weeks or so!
