Like mother by daughter. My D25 is a procrastinator, just like me. And here I am running up on the EA deadline for the CSS. Can someone share how long it took them to fill it out? So I can really procrastinate starting it until precisely the last possible minute
CSS can be pretty time consuming. Time for that kick in the pants.
Three of D25s schools use the CSS profile. However, if we are not seeking financial add, is it still required?
You only have to submit if you are applying for aid. Having said that some schools require FAFSA for merit aid. Always a good idea to google the exact policy.
Thank you for the quick reply. My fear was that not submitting it may impact a decision but that does not seem to be the case.
I don’t think Cornell or northwestern give merit aid so that wouldn’t be an issue there. Not sure about Umich.
I’m out of the country at the moment and would not be able to complete the profile. Your message quelled a panic. Thank you.
My son applied to UMich and we did not do the CSS. I made sure to check and it was not required if not applying for financial aid.
Correct. It’s fine for all three. IMO not worth the trouble of filling out if the NPC does not indicate an award.
You should double-check with every college—some may require the CSS for merit aid, and as @TonyGrace noted a number require the FAFSA for merit aid.
The reason is pretty simple, really—requiring the FAFSA raises the possibility of some merit awards being at least partially offset by federal or state dollars (which is clearly beneficial to a college’s finances), and requiring the FAFSA and/or CSS raises the possibility of some merit awards being at least partially offset by institutional funds dedicated to need-based aid (which are much easier to fundraise for).
Lots of applications in, but still no responses. I’ve heard it can take longer with film portfolios to watch. The uncertainty is driving me nuts, lol! He sees his friends getting acceptances, but none of his schools or programs are releasing yet. In hindsight I would have had him apply to a safety with rolling admission.
I am coaching a first-gen senior through Scholar Match this year. She is literally the most organized, pro-active person I have met in my life (she already submitted 8 applications), and I still think she would have struggle without my assistance. And I’m getting assistance by reaching out to my friend we hired to help my stepson! For someone like her, she would have been ok, but she will definitely be in a better place because of my help.
I don’t know how someone less motivated / organized could do it.
First EA decision received, my D25 was accepted to East Carolina University (ECU). We’re OOS from MA. ECU is last on her list since it’s the one school we haven’t visited, but it’s not a bad option and still feels good to have one acceptance under her belt. Now we await 5 more EA decisions.
Congratulations, mine as well. We are waiting for other responses probably December though.
We attended Discover Redlands Day at the University of Redlands and they knocked it out of the park. It was very well organized with presentations from the university president, a faculty panel, alumni, the community service office, and the career center. We also had a campus tour, attended a football game, and a very exciting women’s basketball game. D25 loved the whole day and the ‘on-the-spot’ admissions sealed the deal. She received preliminary admission based on her transcript. Official admission will come later after they review her entire application. The AO also said that based on her GPA she would qualify for the top merit award of $37,000! I think it has moved up to the top of her list.
That sounds like a great visit and a great option for her! Woo hoo!
Completely random thing totally unrelated to anything, but it made me laugh. My son is a junior at WPI, which is a pretty nerdy STEM school. He is also in a fraternity. He told me over the weekend that the fraternity “always has hard seltzer at parties, because some of the brothers are gluten free”. And I have no idea why that made me laugh, but it seriously did. When I think of the fraternity parties I saw/attended in college, I’m quite confident that no one was thinking of the dietary restrictions of the members. (As evidenced by the fraternity that had their T1 Diabetic pledge chug milk… because they thought that would be better than beer. Uh, no. Not a good solution.)
He got one! Phew!
That actually made me chuckle, too. Perhaps because it feels like some small step toward adulting to give thoughtful choices to your guests at a party? I dunno…but hey, good on them.
I think there is also regional variation…
Except for Niche direct admits, I don’t know anyone that has heard from a school yet…most northeast schools don’t release anything until Dec.
I think all SUNYs but Binghamton, Stony Brook, and Geneseo have begun sending out decisions. S25 also heard back from UNH.
My D25 received admission to KU and the Mich State and Penn State threads have reports of acceptances.
Even though KU is well down on D’s list, there is a distinct possibility that is where she will end up. Admittedly, a little weight lifted off her shoulders as she does have a home in the worst case scenario.
