Parents of the HS Class of 2025 (Part 1)

I only applied to three colleges back in the day. My daughter was shocked. It’s the norm to apply to so many now.

agree 20 is too many.

I have a kid with 2 separate academic interests and few schools that are good at both that meet geographic needs, etc. They applied to 14 as they didn’t feel they could decide between those interests, yet. They had likely and target schools for both interests, etc. I suppose if 10 was max, they would have had to do fewer reaches (not of which are all that reachy either). Not end of world, but I wouldn’t want them to have had to feel they had to decide earlier than spring…

Same. 3 w/ one far reach being ED. Got into the ED so withdrew the others.

I also like the idea of colleges capping the extracurriculars list to … say … 4. Pick the most meaningful ones to you. Go deep on those in high school.

He’s all good now. Went to school early and ambushed her. Then sent her a bunch of screenshots.

Sadly it’s a small high school and there are only 2 science teachers. The other one loves him! But AP Bio was his only choice for a science this year so he is stuck with her. And the whole “kill them with kindness” is sadly outside of his realm of capabilities. 4 more months!!

Counterpoint: For those of us searching for Big Merit Aid™ (or for some other situations, such as those angling for Tuition Exchange) or who are fully reliant on need-based aid being high enough, 10 may be too few.

Of course, this could maybe be fixed by having net price calculators actually work, and not just for need-based aid, but that would eliminate the black-box advantages colleges have in the application process, and we can’t have that, can we?

Do not ED2. Some schools like Case like to force kids to switch. They need your money, you need the most affordable school that fits needs of your kid. Different interests!

It’s only been about a week since D25 received acceptances from her EA apps. I was kind of hoping for a little swag. She hasn’t even received a physical letter except from one. All the colleges were giving out stickers, water bottles, and so forth on the tours. I was hoping for a little fanfare now. Are any of your students getting any fun swag from colleges?

The letters seem slow this year! S25 did get a flag from Furman and some stickers from Trinity U and Gonzaga. I think a magnet from Auburn. But nothing from SMU yet at all (he was accepted a month ago!).

What a mess. My heart goes out to you for having to deal with this stuph.

I find it odd/interesting/curious that no other families of students with this class were involved in the conversation. Every student in that class has been dealing with the loss of the teacher, the loss of direction for how things would move forward, and the lack of communication about what’s in the works for dealing with the situation. And that has to have had an impact on them, as well as their families.

I’m hopeful you making the effort to get a specific answer on how admin plans to handle a really awful situation will mean they see the value of keeping parents in the loop. And I also hope the other families get to hear what you heard today: they have a plan in place. I just feel badly that you had to be the one to initiate it all.

I do think that 20+ is way too many apps. But 10 would just favor full pay folks not looking for merit opportunities. Also have no idea how a limit of 10 applications would be enforced?

So, D25 eventually received socks from UGA. She received them about 2 weeks or so after everyone else on here reported receiving them. Her ED school eventually sent her a note saying that she was receiving a coupon to get a free tee from the school online bookstore. Otherwise, she received a postcard from an Alumnus from one EA school before she had to pull her then open apps and other admissions. I liked the idea of the socks, but she seemed less enthused than I thought she would / should be about them.

Funny that you should comment on the lack of broad communication re: the ASL teacher situation. We also happened to have S25’s last IEP meeting today, and the SpEd Case Carrier said he KNEW other families were talking to the assistant principal about this, he’d been copied on several emails, and she never replied in writing, only said “lets talk.” Which is weird. Then when i talked with her she explicitly said that they weren’t putting out any information to the parents before the end of the quarter about giving a No Grade, because they didn’t want the kids to “stop trying” in class or to treat it like it doesn’t count. Newsflash - it doesn’t count. And she asked me to not tell my kid. This is a terrible way to run a program.

This was us too - he declined the UGA acceptance upon getting in ED, but 2 weeks later still got the socks. S25 just got an email for the free class of '29 shirt from his ED school too!

I don’t know about you, but it’s garbage attitudes (or stronger word choice) like this that makes me so glad to be moving on from high school. I wouldn’t deal particularly well with the request to not tell my kid.

Again, though, it makes me glad you are actively challenging the status quo. It stinks that you have to go through it, but it is clearly something this admin is getting consistent feedback about changing.

I mean, they can WANT me to not tell my kid, the same way I can WANT to win a million dollars. Neither one is likely to happen.

My kid has had such stress from the crap-@ss substitute they’ve had (funny, she only sends the kids with IEPs for attentional issues - which I know because I know all the moms, to detention for “talking and disrupting class”. Right. That’s what their accommodations are supposed to be for.) that I’m definitely going to tell him that this drama is going to be over after next week and he doesn’t need to worry about whatever she’s doing re: grades.

It’s done via UCAS (5 limit) in the UK, which is kind of their common app, but that would mean everyone has to apply on one form and just that statement probably has the California publics amongst others up in arms.

D25 has gotten stickers from a couple of places, and a t-shirt from a third. But ~5 of them have sent folders with official letters, which D25 seems to think are really nice; she’s commented on the folders multiple times.

well, we’ll have some decisions in the next 24 hours. JMU, S25s safety that at this point he would only attend if they gave him the worlds most amazing merit (just way too many people from his school go there, and I don’t disagree), has decisions posted. He’s at practice and I’m at work, so who knows.

Tomorrow at 4:00 apparently UNC Chapel Hill is posting. At least, per one person who saw it announced on tik tok. That’s his top choice and given how very hard it is to get in from out of state, is extremely unlikely for him. We’ve been talking about how unlikely he is to get in, that so few OOS students get in that it’s no reflection on him, but still, I’m worried that he’ll be really upset. This weekend is shaping up to be a downer for him as he’s got a ton of work to finish for the end of the quarter and his lack of success on the track is really being shoved down his throat as he’s the only senior not invited to run at the all-relays meet.
