Parents of the HS Class of 2025 (Part 1)

In non-admissions related news, S25 will have his Eagle Scout Court of Honor on Saturday. He earned his Eagle last April, but has been waiting for his best friend to earn his so they can do a court of honor together. That kid now has, and it’s the Saturday. We’re being relatively chill about it, as that fits with the two boys. One area where I wanted to fancy it up a bit - we decided that instead of ordering a cake, we’d do lots of cupcakes. So much easier than having to have someone on cake cutting duty.

So I ordered custom cupcake toppers, it’s supposed to be an oval with the Eagle Patch in the middle, with both boys names, the troop number and the words Eagle Scout on it. They arrived today. Instead of 48 little sticks with the graphic on the top to stick in the cupcakes that I ordered, I have multiple sheets of circles, 100+ circles, no sticks.

Am I supposed to assemble them myself? Are they two sides that stick together? But there’s no sticks, how do they levitate above the cupcake? The personalized text is at the bottom, so i don’t think you stick the oval paper into the frosting, then you won’t see the names.

I’ve emailed the etsy seller, so we’ll see what she suggests. Maybe they got sent out before they were put together and she was supposed to do it? No clue. If I don’t hear from her I’ll figure something out. I ordered (from somewhere else) 24 trefoils. I don’t know why, I was in a panic of ordering things and couldn’t stop myself. Now I’m thinking if I can’t figure out how to make these ovals into some kind of picks I can just use the trefoils as picks, then cut out (un perforate? Punch out?) these ovals and just toss them on the table for decor. That will be annoying, because that’s not what I bought them for, but whatever.

could you cut them out and tape them to toothpicks?

I had never even heard of the Presidential Scholar. How does one get nominated?

I think so? I sent the seller a note to see if she had a specific way that I should do it. If I don’t hear anything then the taping to toothpicks will definitely work.

C25 got admitted to RIT with merit roughly equal to what the NPC said it would be. So that’s very exciting over here.

1 ED rejection
5 EA accept (2 rolling, guaranteed admit for in-state reasons)
1 still waiting since no Early option available…

We currently have 1 admitted visit scheduled (to OSU) and we plan to add another for RIT. I feel like the kid needs to do a vibe check before attending some place far enough I can’t just drive up and “speak to the manager” (not that I would, but still, I feel like it’s more of an option when they’re closer). Make sure they feel comfortable at the local grocery store, etc.

Is it just a very unimaginative and unattractive circle that you just lay flat on top of a peak of icing? Like, if you ever seen the button candies where you heat up the hersheys kiss on top of the pretzel and then squish an m&m into the point of the kiss?

How sad to have what could have been a really spectacular topper be…less.

But congratulations to your Eagle Scouts. :tada: Hope they have a really nice event to celebrate that big accomplishment!!

Congrats on the acceptances! Which O state? Beavers, Cowboys, or Buckeyes?

OSU Beavers (Oregon, but not the Ducks. )

I definitely could do that with them. But the picture on etsy had them like standing up sticking out of the top of the cupcake. It’s not like it’s the end of the world, but these were kind of expensive for what they are, so it’s a bummer that they aren’t working quite right. Oh well. If * THAT’S * the biggest thing that goes wrong, I’ll call it a win.

Congratulations to your son on becoming an Eagle Scout. My son is also an Eagle Scout and we know how much time and sacrifices the parents put in driving to scout events, merit badges classes, Eagle projects and on and on. The scouts do earn a lot of community and service hours.

S25 got word today that he’s a candidate for the Presidential Scholar program. But, he’s unsure if he should notify the colleges for his applications. My sense is that there’s no harm in letting them know. . .

My understanding is that it’s based on SAT scores.

Cupcake topper mystery solved!

There WERE little pick sticks in the envelope, but somehow neither of us saw them when we both repeatedly looked (no idea how) and then somehow they also didn’t fall out when we shook the envelope upside down.

So, tomorrow evenings fun will be folding programs and building cupcake picks.

Well that didn’t even take until tomorrow. My daughter was accepted to RIT today and the order of preference has once again shifted, with RIT and NCSU (where she is deferred) on top, then UNCW, and then Temple and ECU tied for bottom. This is almost a complete flip flop for Temple. (I’ll also say that things are shifting around so often that there is no way I’d advise her to decline any offers just yet.)

RIT is the farthest school from us out of the choices still in the running, and although we’ve visited once already, I would really like her to see it in the dead of winter. Their first admitted students day isn’t until the end of March. I’m trying to figure out if we can swing a visit in February somehow.

She was also declined for ECU Honors today, but offered a place in the Chancellor’s Scholars program, which is new this year. We should get more information about that program within a week or so. At least for today, I’m much more interested in ECU than my daughter is, but once again, we’ll see what tomorrow brings!

This describes it better than I can: About the Program | U.S. Department of Education

For the academic nominations, generally it requires a ACT of 36 from a single test date or a 1590+ SAT (some states may have slightly lower cut-offs). Superscores don’t qualify.

This afternoon, my kid who seemed to have little preference of the schools (per above we’d signed up for 8 admitted students days!) came home randomly worried about RIT decision and when it would come and if they would get in… and also saying “I am so nervous it is my first choice”. Ummm, what now?

Anyway, about 20 minutes later I checked portal and randomly decisions had come out - got in, with first choice major!

Kid seems genuinely relieved. Also finished 1st semester OK (not great, but better than we all feared).

I am thinking (hoping!) over the next week that we may be able to cancel some of the other admitted students days and final choices may become clearer.

I think it will end up being RIT, but a couple of others in the running…not entirely sure kid has fully fully internalized the coop / 5 year thing at RIT.

RIT is also the hardest for us to get to…unfortunately…there is another school farther, but with MUCH easier transit links.

And why is it that so many of these kids prefer the schools that are the biggest PITA to get to? Because that 100% feels like what my guy is looking at…

we’re doing one so far. But checking out two on regular visits. May add Pitt if we hear back.

So my C25 was nominated for the Presidential Scholar program, which came as a complete surprise. (And we found out not from the school, but by my kid being texted by a friend from another school who was also nominated!) Nothing close to a 1590+/36 here, but different rules often apply to Alaska—not a lot of focus on standardized testing here whatsoever, and so our scores tend to skew lower, even at the higher end.

So that was cool. But then it was a bit tempered by finding out at nearly the same time that Pitt only offered $10k/year—I honestly hadn’t really expected them to make it properly affordable, but there was still a bit of hope, you know? So that wasn’t wonderful, because Pitt would have been the perfect location for the kid’s linguistic interests—they have a number of scholars (some of whom I count as professional friends!) who are doing some really, really cool work, and they’re happy to work with motivated undergrads on it.

But on the positive side, that means we’re down to four possibilities—2 admission and financial decisions pending, 1 financial award pending, and 1 already admitted and affordable—and I’m always in favor of the list getting whittled down. So there’s that, right?
