Parents of the HS Class of 2025 (Part 1)

Wow! That is telling. I would probably be walking backwards very slowly from that school. I hope it’s not a really preferred school for him.

Agreed! It was, but no longer. He also has schools he prefers more with decisions coming in March, but those are the reachy reaches.

I can understand needing to separate political discussions from the college app conversations. We are all inundated with opinions daily so the need to keep this forum a little more focused is a good thing, and healthy.
However we are in such unusual times and parents are dealing with many new issues that will affect our kids choices. It can be hard to cleanly cut out political discussions when it clearly affects college options. I think we all have to give each other some grace to speak truth to the moment in a very respectful but practical way.

neither of my kids schools have any recognitions and honestly I like it ..less worry and fuss for all.

no honor rolls, no rank, pretty sure speakers at graduation are selected nd it is not by GPA. They do have NHS, but you can get in EITHER by your UW or W GPA.

I also don’t believe in athletic academic awards in HS. That is special preference for athletes above and beyond other ECs which are actually academic (you know, what school is for:). Note, I was a varsity athlete in HS. Not against sports but am against them being focus of so much stuff at schools.

So Western Washington came in with a generous-but-still-falls-short financial offer.

So that means C25 will be attending college in New York, though whether it’ll be Upstate or Long Island is still to be determined. But we’re getting closer…

Wait, was the actual response, “You get what you get, and you don’t get upset” or are you trying to capture the spirit of the response??

Oh sorry! It was the spirit. They said they almost never entertain appeals and their offer is final.

Thanks! He appealed the aid package so we’ll see there. He’s in a bit of a funk b/c he’s now realizing all the con’s of his school choices, and wondering if he should have broadened his search more… like someone had suggested months ago (cough). It’ll be fine, he has good options and ASU gave him an additional $4000 today, which puts it almost exactly in line with George Mason, and both of them have good Korean programs.

Unrelated to my S25, but my S22 got an offer for a summer internship today and we are SO happy! He had interviews with two other companies last week that he’s also waiting to hear back from. It would be so lovely for him to have a few choices to decide between. Sadly, none of the potential jobs are located anywhere near us. That’s really challenging for me - he was far away last summer too and it just makes it that much more real that he’s practically fully launched.

I’m grateful that S25 has a local summer job in the works - he was briefly talking about being a counselor at his sleep away summer camp and I’m so glad he’s changed his mind. I’m not ready to have him gone too.

I’m going to be a mess come August.

We were planning to appeal the financial awards once we had them all in hand and the list had been narrowed to the final few. Is that not the appropriate course of action? SHould we be doing appeals now?

Well, the first of the post-acceptance college visit happened today. C25 still really likes the school, and all went well, but suddenly the 5 hour drive is concerning them. Funny how that happens. I think I recall getting concerned about the distance as I got close to a final decision in 1993. Not saying it doesn’t have some importance, but I do NOT want that to be the deciding factor. Two more visits over president’s day and then there are the two schools we won’t hear from until the end of March…the wait is killing me (although doesn’t seem to bug C25).

haha thanks. I promise I’m not always so dumb.

D25 is having issues with the distance suddenly also (9 hours for the one). We’re waiting for the admitted student days for the other college to come out (Friday). We’re in a holding pattern until that happens.

Just to clarify, I was giving the :tada: for the summer internship, not the anticipation Of being a mess in August. I don’t know if it was on this board or another place, but I thought your family was working hard to figure out the internship options for the summer. Just glad to see one had come through. Congrats!!

And FWIW, yes, August is going to require a lot of mops….:sob: you won’t be the only one looking around at the empty nest and wondering how it happened so fast…..

Yea, that’s us. I just posted about it in the thread about it being hard to find a job. Counting the ones he did last night, he applied to 109 jobs. I’d say 10 were fed jobs that got cancelled before they would’ve contacted anyone; probably 30-35 he applied to after they had been open for a while and in all likelihood were filled, he just didn’t know; I’d say there were another 10 that were super unlikely given how high profile they were; 40+ that he applied to in the month of January that I think were still plausible.

He got a total of five interviews with people, and three (two at the same place) of the weird record yourself answering questions interviews.

It’s been a process. There are still two other companies that he hasn’t heard from and I’m being a little greedy and hoping he gets an offer from at least one of them too, just so he has a choice.

But he’s really done a lot of work, so I’m glad something has come of it.

I don’t have an answer for this but am curious when you decide to make an appeal and for what reasons? Our finances have not changed, and most schools are coming in within a few thousand dollars of each other (after receiving their largest merit awards). One surprised me because the financial offer came back about $10,000 more than I had estimated with their Net Price Calculator. It was her second pick, but she is willing to take it off the table at that amount. Do you appeal just to try to get a better offer, or only if you think things were calculated incorrectly or your cash flow circumstances have changed? I’ve read you shouldn’t accept the first offer, but if she has already received their top merit awards and additional grants, would there be much wiggle room? She applied to all SLACs in PA, MD, and VA.
