Parents of the HS Class of 2025 (Part 1)

DH is turning 50 this year and we planned a big international trip over spring break + some school time, which the kids have happily agreed to ditch for. On the bright side, yay–cheap(er) tickets, cool(er) weather, and fewer crowds. Since this is our first college rodeo, I can see a bit of a downside now. We have exactly 2 days in April that we can use to visit any accepted schools on the east coast. Whoops.

Hopefully I won’t be making other flight arrangements on our flight out. Omg, does UDub really come on out on the ides of March? You are kidding me.

How did he hear about JMU merit?

My child is taking a class that involves an overseas spring break trip. No parent chaperones allowed. So all 20 or so kids will be gone right in the middle of peak decision time. They’ll be supported by each other but we won’t be there. I didn’t realize the poor timing until just a couple weeks ago. :frowning:

Son got an email from JMU last night with the info. It was also in his portal under the scholarship hub.

@kirroyalemum and @VTMom03 - we’re in the same place. We’re going to Greece for 10 days in April. My older son is there on a term abroad and it’s my 50th, so we’re going to celebrate. But that means that any college visiting is really squeezed in. Right now the plan is that each of the two weekends before we go to Greece we are doing road trips. Theoretically it works, but I have no idea when my kid will actually get any work done… for like a month. I’m just pretending it’s going to be ok.

@OctoberKate that sounds AMAZING! Hopefully by then he’ll have a good feel for a final decision and you’ll be celebrating :tada:

I’m super excited about it. S22 found out he’d be in Greece for the term in Dec 2023 and I’ve basically been thinking about this trip ever since. We’re only spending a couple days with S22 - he’s working while he’s there - but I’m really looking forward to the trip for the rest of us. We don’t really travel much - usually it’s like a road trip to the beach, maybe a trip to NYC for a big adventure. So this is really way outside our normal stuff.

OMG, Greece was a top contender for our honeymoon many moons ago. I still need to get Greece. Enjoy!

I think it will all work out, just with less time than I’d prefer.

Exciting day Friday. DS received his appointment to the Merchant Marine Academy! Besides this being potentially his best option to get him to his goal of Naval Aviator, it means no tuition room or board for us! Huge sigh of relief because I had no idea how we would pay for 2 kids at once in college and my goal is that they graduate debt free. The only school that would possibly win out over that is USNA. Trying to schedule an overnight visit in March to USMMA.

We are doing a big trip to Europe this year too, to celebrate HS graduation and a big birthday for me (I wish I could say it was 50 but that’s a distant memory).
I really wanted to plan it for over spring break but I knew admitted student days would get in the way as they’ll likely be spread out all over the country. If he gets into his very high reach school in late March he will only visit there so we might do some last minute maneuvering to go in April but it’s more likely we’ll be going in August with the hordes and the heat! Btw have you noticed many admitted students days are on Mon or Fri?

Only 1 of my kid’s schools has admitted students days that aren’t a Sat or Sun. That’s UVM and they have a million offered so most people can have one aligned with a school vacation.

I feel like doing them all weekdays is insult to HS teachers and rude to parents honestly. (If they have multiple and it’s a variety of days offered I guess that is OK).

The only two admitted students days we’re doing are both Saturday’s (well, one is a Saturday and the other is unclear - could be Saturday, could be Saturday or Sunday, who knows, but since they still haven’t actually admitted us, that’s on the backburner for the moment). I like the not missing school idea but since they start so early in the morning, we’ll have to miss school/work Friday to get there. I guess theoretically we could drive to one of them after the school day gets out (can’t wait for work to finish, that’s too late) but the other is an 8 hour drive… And again I wonder why my kid couldn’t fall in love with any schools within 3 hours of our house…

I notice I have a piece of cake next to my name today. I guess it’s the anniversary of when I joined CC?

This is interesting. D25 has identified the school she will be going to. We did a tour last March and I’ve encouraged her to go to an admitted student’s day as the vibe will almost certainly be different - and her lens most certainly will be. No interest.

I think I’ve talked S25 into attending one of the admitted student days at Rose. He is so down in the dumps right now about his breakup, and I think this might be a reminder of what he has to look forward to in the fall. Selfishly I wish this breakup had happened this summer so that he could have enjoyed the rest of the school year and the fun things he was planning (like prom). Shockingly no one asked my opinion on the future of the relationship. :upside_down_face:

Hope everyone has a good week!

Can you say where you are going?

I think it means you are supposed to go eat cake today. Or maybe we all are supposed to have cake.

Or maybe I just want cake…

Yes! Cake for everyone!

Hopefully he goes, it’s good to have something in the future they are looking forward to, a little hope goes a long way!

Yeah, it’s also possible that we’ll be cancelling our two admitted students day trips that we’ve signed up for. Frankly, I signed up and booked the hotels because I want to get the hotel and I’m worried I won’t - both schools are big and don’t have THAT many hotels nearby (that are reasonably priced). But we still don’t have spring sports schedule, and if the admitted students days are the days of big meets, we may cancel. Which will make me sad, but it’s the kid’s last season of playing a sport, so…
