Parents of the HS Class of 2025 (Part 1)

If it were me I’d let him miss the whole day

She’s going for an overnight next Monday. Should be able to make her decision after that. We have paused talking about it until after that visit. She’s leaning towards Hillsdale but needs to see what an evening looks like there with the actual students.

Could you fly out Wednesday morning before the snow hits?

We went to Japan last May and are going again this upcoming May. We visited Tokyo, Kyoto, and Hiroshima last year. Happy to send recommendations!

let skip

I’m looking at taking work leave for a trip before college, and I’d like to go overseas. I’m on the east coast, so I’d prefer Europe for saving a little air time. Usually we only allow up to max two weeks off from my job, and actually less is preferred by my work. Anyway, to London and maybe an add on city taking Eurorail. Has anyone done this and have any recommendations? I was also looking at a RC cruise from a European port.

I’m supposed to work Wednesday. But even if I could get it off, SWA is already saying that Wednesday flights could be affected, too.

ETA (so I don’t create yet another post): @OctoberKate , Not that it matters, since you are multiple hours ahead of me, but here’s another vote for letting him skip. You are not setting a new precedent, you are being flexible with the one that is already ingrained. i hope the interview goes well!

I would let my kid stay home for the full day

The kids and I did London for a few days and then train to Bruges. It was fantastic. Easy train ride from London, and Bruges is straight out of a fairytale. We stayed in a gorgeous B&B and ate way too much chocolate and french fries.

Agreed. I let my skip school for the first time ever for a mental health day on Friday. He needed it, and he can just catch up (or not!) on what he missed.

Ok, so it’s Indy or bust. I’ll talk to D25 when she’s out of class and ask her to “rank” these auditions–which one is your top priority to be present at? Do you want to risk this? I really appreciate your input!

Unless it’s a full blizzard I think the major airports tend to handle weather pretty well, but it depends where your flight is coming from. I get these warnings from Southwest often and generally ignore them…

Really, often? I’ve never had SWA tell me three days in advance that I can move my flight within 10 days and switch airports locally and at the destination. If that happens more often than I think, then maybe I’ll just mellow out. (And still talk to my kid about sending a video.) Cough, cough, maybe I’m just a mild-weather resident and naive!

ETA: So I’m looking at options, staying with IND for now. Right now our second flight (there’s nothing direct on SWA) leaves from Las Vegas, arriving at 4:25pm. I could change and land from Denver at 7:55pm or Vegas at 8:20pm, if the storm might have cleared by later in the day. Or maybe I’m just overthinking it all (raises hand sheepishly)?

How long was that? And how many days do you think is good there? My college junior is in England for the semester and I am planning of visiting soon. Was thinking of crossing to France for a couple of days but Bruges sounds like a fantastic idea!

@Oja272 The London-Edinburgh trip is an easy one and the city is just fantastic. We did an entire road trip from there and there is some amazing hiking to be done in Scotland (Skye) but even just the city really great. Favorite family trip so far.

We did three days in London, three in Bruges, and then back to London for a final two days. Bruges is small, but I think 3-4 days is perfect to see and do everything. I recommend timing it so you are there during the week if you. Weekends get busy with more “local” tourists.

I am in New England and my family in the Midwest. I often am flying at less than desirable times to save money. I always look for these SWA alerts when weather is coming because I have been able to use it to my advantage and switch to the flight I kind of wanted all along, but it was too expensive. I feel like we don’t always get emails letting us know this is an option, but the option is there for most airlines when there are weather alerts. I think it is proactive for the airlines to help limit the amount of people traveling on flights that have a high chance of being cancelled.

Sending good thoughts into the universe for your kiddo to rock the interview at 1:15. Good luck!!!

Definitely common for SW to send out those messages in our neck of the woods.

Thank you!

And thanks everyone else for the support on letting him stay home. He’s home, he’s rested, I made him lunch early (since I’ve got a noon-1:00 meeting and I’m taking advantage of my last week of telework to work from home) and he’s got a nice shirt to change in to so he doesn’t look like a slop. Hopefully we haven’t hyped this so much that he’s stressed, but rather just the right amount so he takes it seriously and has prepared.

S25 was just named team captain. Not all that surprising but still nice. I don’t think it would’ve moved the needle, but it would’ve been a nice thing to include on his applications.
