Parents of the HS Class of 2025 (Part 1)

This is how my son reacted to the two schools that have given him the best merit aid so far. One of them I understand, but I swear the other has dropped down his list just because they seem to want him.

I like the luggage tag! Goes with the purpose of what they are communicating about, it’s actually useful, and it’s a reminder of how interested in her they are. Invite good marketing! (Because my vote matters sooooo much :joy:)

YES! My son is the same way. The more money, nice emails, and attention they throw at him, the less he is interested.

We are now having the opposite occur. Two schools that were not even talked about by her in January have now moved way up. Iowa has one of the best direct admit nursing programs and she found out she was admitted to that a little over a week ago. Then South Carolina admitted her to the Honors College which also gives her DA nursing and they were already our least expensive option. And USC is letting her know she is wanted there. Reaching out every day, a handwritten congratulations card from her admissions counselor who talked about meeting her last fall and hoped to see her on campus, etc. We do go to Iowa tomorrow to tour the nursing facility on Monday, so hopefully that provides her with info that will be useful to ask questions to distinguish the other 4 contenders to start narrowing things down.

When do I tell her about the palmetto bugs in the south??  That may help to eliminate some options…

Nursing prof here. Direct admit is the way to go and sounds like she has great options!

She has sat on the decision for a couple days after last college visit. We talked about the pros and cons of schools she’s waiting on financials for. In the end there is only one school that is ticking all her boxes which fits our budget.

Enrollment deposit sent in!

Am I actually done with college tours and decision making?

(And we bought a prom dress today too which is the complete opposite of what she said she wanted yet is also perfect for her.)

Hope everyone is hanging in there. We received our last decision until late March and here is where things stand for “Quirky kid who never got his Hogwart’s letter.”

Ursinus (40k renewable merit)
Bard (full pay, eek)
UNH (5k renewable merit)
St. John’s Annapolis (16k renewable merit)

Stats at application, 3.8 UW, 4.06ish W, 1390 SAT submitted, applied EA where available, otherwise RD.

Right now he is leaning toward St. John’s, but that notification just arrived last night.

Waiting on Dickinson & Bates.

C25 got the St Joseph’s sock yesterday.

And it is a very, very nice sock. But one sock isn’t enough to wear, and yeah, the idea that you get the other one by attending an accepted student day is cute, but for those of us who live {quick check} 3,365 air miles away, that’s a non-starter.

(In other college news, Binghamton sent their official full financial offer, which included the note that they’d figured our COA in some particular way because we live within 45 miles of them, ummm…)

Just made it back from Tour de Blizzard. It’s S25’s 18th birthday (these occasions are increasingly fraught because he doesn’t like attention and the older he is, the harder it is to surprise him with presents that he’d actually enjoy) and we whiffed it. Fortunately our super-friend swung to the rescue – picked us up at the airport and ferried us home where her son and another friend were waiting with cake they’d made, and balloons, and a giant sign across our front porch. I’m chagrined (for not having a big to-do planned for our shy and prickly kid) and grateful (to our friends for doing for him what he probably wouldn’t have accepted from us) all at the same time.

Tour de Blizzard did, in the end, include some minorly sketchy driving conditions. Was grateful to have my Midwestern husband behind the wheel. Impressions still need to settle. Personally I found something to love about each school and am feeling good about encouraging him to apply there. I was grateful to the ones who already admitted him (in two cases with generous merit). And I guess we’re going to have to let some of them go now. I’ll share more on the Tour de Blizzard thread after we unpack (physically and metaphorically). His favorite school on the trip is unfortunately the one I think he has a serious chance of being rejected by. (his chances must be better now that he’s visited though, right? They definitely track interest.)

Welcome back and happy birthday to your son! I’m looking forward to reading about the rest of the trip.

Non-college-related freak-out rant. Single mom who saved for two years for graduation present/bucket list trip to Japan for this summer for my little family - S25 and older autistic brother. I lived in Japan in my 20s and am excited to show this beautiful country to my kids! Booked non-refundable, non-changeable tickets with ANA and selected seats at the time of reservation. ANA moved the outgoing flight by 30 minutes and completely erased our seat assignments! Now there are only middle seats and in separate aisles available. My oldest MUST sit with me, but when I contact ANA they say there is nothing they can do. I can’t even upgrade. Do I take a doctor’s note to their desk at JFK and plead with puppy eyes? Lose the ticket $ and buy different outbound tickets? I can’t risk hoping to be switched the day of our flight. Ugh!

Is the outgoing flight subject to ADA? I would think that sitting with your child who has autism would qualify for accommodations under that act.

I’d call back and see if you can get an agent who might be more helpful. Ask if they can switch your flight even, to one with more seat availability. Agents can be very hit or miss

I might see if ANA has a disability phone line to call to talk about this issue. I know some airlines have those and they are incredibly helpful in making sure disabled passengers are set up with accommodations that are available.

I will check and see! Thank you.

I have a D23 at Bard, so feel free to let me know if you have any questions about the school!

Sounds like we have a lot of overlap. Also have the 40k at Ursinus. Went to the brunch last week…I thought it was awkward for my child because they are very shy, but after we left, they loved it and said I could see myself there. We ruled out Bard on the visit. We loved Bates, but there was zero chance at scholarship, only need based, so didn’t apply, and Dickinson remains the favorite, but only works if get decent merit.
