Just wondering if anyone here has experience with UW(Seattle) in the humanities. S25 might likely end up picking it over his reach schools. We still have one more tour tomorrow (Carleton) and I’m really hoping it goes well. Would love for him to pick it, but I really think it’s going to end up being UW
Slight chance he might pick UMichigan - tour was good there- but he really is leaning heavily towards UW. I’m trying to get on board with it but I’m having a hard time. He is turning down Vassar too, which is killing me because the English dept is so strong.
I don’t think he’s thinking through research opportunities, relationship with professors, internship opportunities. Not sure how that looks at UW for English majors. He also isn’t sure if that’s what he wants to study- might want to switch to a history major, which is a different dept (social sciences). I don’t think it will be too difficult to switch to history but it’s not as flexible as a LAC.
Are your children (adults now that they’re 18) getting Real IDs?
Mine had one from their initial license at 16…
If they want to fly they have to get a real ID asap. Doesn’t have to be a drivers license, could be a state ID, or a passport, but after May they won’t be able to fly without one.
good point about deductibles being different. Didn’t matter to us, but definitely could for others!
here in MD that’s the standard license so he’s had it since 16
Interesting. So in PA, they didn’t require it when he got his license..Now I guess we need to get it.
It wasn’t required 2 years ago for us - it was either/or. It made sense just to get it over with.
Funny enough I haven’t bothered upgrading mine, yet. It renews soonish so will just do it then. I don’t find it that big of a deal to carry my passport to fly domestically.. I have traveled a ton internationally so pretty used to it! And I don’t enter federal buildings randomly:)
We have never gotten passports, either. That is something on our list this summer.
FYI, you might want to look into real ID quickly, I know appointments in my state are WAY backed up - people are having lots of trouble getting in to DMV or affiliated centers for anything (including permit applications, tests etc).
hopefully not true where you are though! (I am not aware of passport turnaround at moment).
Ah yes, the Dell of Theseus
Also pretty standard. The droids are at UMich and pretty much all the kids have their laptops in every class they take.
headed to University of Illinois Urbana Champaign today for the admitted students day tomorrow. We are in the final stretch. looks like it will be UIUC or Penn State for aerospace engineering
I live very close to UW and have friends with students there. It’s a great school with a fabulous reputation. The local companies actually choose UW students over others as they know how qualified they are upon graduation. It’s big and you need to advocate for yourself. But changing majors is relatively easy if not impacted. They maintain they understand this age isn’t always set on what they want to study. The weather is real. Many love it but it is something to consider.
Envious for all of you who have decisions made. We are just beginning the admitted student visits. Next week, S25 will visit Princeton, then go to MIT. He has a short break, then Stanford and Harvard back to back. I’ll be joining him at Princeton–never been there! Will report back, as I know some here are alums.
What fantastic options – fabulous schools with what I expect will be different "vibes.’ Hopefully one will feel right.
Oh for sure! Not just college.. at my 25’s HS kids have their laptop (or school-issued chromebook) out most of the time.. In both my kids high schools most kids have macs (if not using school issued chromebooks)- by a substantial majority.
We are off to Spokane tomorrow. Admitted student’s day at Gonzaga on Saturday. The schedule looks like a full day with student activities going until 9 pm!
Unfortunately, the weather isn’t going to be the nice, warm Spring day we were hoping for. High of 50 and cloudy and breezy. I guess it will be good for D25 in deciding if she really wants to leave the CA weather!
My daughter loves UW (Seattle)!
Ooof, this is a tough place to be for you, and my heart goes out to you. This board has plenty of us who understand your situation. It doesn’t make it any easier, but know that you have a sympathetic group here for any virtual hugs or pep talks you might need.
(I was definitely in a similar place a month ago, and given time, I have definitely shifted to where I am really pleased with where S25 finally chose. Year ago, I also would have been struggling. It isn’t easy an easy time, but when you get through it, I hope you can be in a good place. I’m sorry if that sounds preachy, especially since you are still in The throes of visits and research! I just want you to feel ok about where you are right now.)
Lots of virtual hugs
