Parents of the HS Class of 2025 (Part 1)

We have the traditional August to December and January to May. Everybody really likes starting the holidays done with everything, and we like finishing before Memorial Day.

The state of the dorms and dining halls took SMU off our list. How is it the same cost as all these other private schools but they look like they haven’t updated in 30 years? If they didn’t require you to live on campus it wouldn’t be as big a deal.

Our school district also does the “start right after Labor Day, 1st semester ends mid-January” nonsense. So, “take a 2 week break, come back to school and cram for tests, take them, then start the new stuff” which just seems mean to me, but my kids don’t know any different until college.

Same here.

Good luck, I hope the score is what you were aiming for!

Thanks. She is happy with her score but will probably take it again.

My son did the ACT after a concert where we got home at 1:30am. His math score reflected that :joy:. However, he got a 31 on English. He much prefers the SAT.

So much for theories connecting music and math?

Pretty sure it doesn’t apply to attending a rap concert.

Promotional email from a college today and it closes out with “I hope you choose [name of college]! If you’re ready to commit, you can complete the Enrollment Response Form on your applicant portal.” What on earth? My kid is a junior and hasn’t applied to any colleges yet :joy:

We’ve been going on visits during random days off of school. D25 refuses to miss school for visit days. It’s the main reason we started sophomore year.

@chicagoshannon’s post brings u something where I sometimes feel like I am emphatically not like most of the people on CC: I cannot imagine having my kid miss a day of school to do a college tour. Ever.

I mean, I guess maybe if it’s spring of senior year and it’s for a scholarship competition or such. But I’d also question a college that set things up such that my kid would have to miss school for that college’s scheduling convenience.

Prepare to question 99% of colleges.

Divorced parent who doesn’t have my kids 100% of the time as well as my own college’s work schedule, I can’t guarantee they won’t miss school for a college visit.

But then again, D25 has already missed 2 days this year for dance competition. (Yet I myself get total anxiety if I have to miss a day of work).

I’m not sure I follow.

The vast majority of colleges have college tours in the summer (or during other breaks from schooling), and only very few have interviews or competitions or such that would require a day off from school.

Even allowing that the 99% figure is hyperbolic, I don’t see coming close to matching reality.

We were talking specifically about college tours. And that’s what I was referring to. If you want to tour in order to get a feel for the way campus will actually feel for college students, that’s during the academic year, during the week. That’s why they’re offered then and not often on weekends.

A summer tour is better than nothing of course.

Tours are a nice bonus, not a necessity.

Agree to disagree. I cannot imagine making the decision to spend four years living and learning in a community without first having set foot in the place. Add in the six-figure expenditure and that’s a hard no.

I understand that many people cannot do so for a variety of reasons.

Agree that in order to get a real feel for the culture, a tour should be while kids are on campus. The weekend tours we’ve done leave my kid disappointed bc campus appears DEAD. I keep trying to tell her that college kids are asleep at 11 AM on Saturdays but the vibe is still disappointing.

We attended fall weekend open houses as time allowed and ofc students are awake, present & enthusiastic on open house days. But then it seems unfair to compare a non-open house visit.

I really wish we had spring break available to tour.

definitely look at University of Nebraska-Omaha, top 20 CJ program and dance team. also take a look at the “Our Urban Rate” tuition - very competitive out of state tuition. dorms are great - single rooms in suite!

Same here @dfbdfb
We had a limited number of schools that were going to work for us, so we just waited until after S23 received acceptances. All the admitted students’ days were on Saturday/Sunday. We got much better information about the specific program too.
