D26 is in Summer Mode - She took a repeat SAT, Four APs, repeat ACT, and Finals in two other courses, followed by her birthday and starting her summer internship all in the course of the last two weeks.

Her internship is with a small business consulting group, working 18-20 hours a week in a small business going thru Operations (Facility Maintenance, Equipment Maintenance, Inventory stock/ordering/counts etc), Finance (Learning finance statements, budgeting / forecasting) and Marketing (Social Media accounts, websites, Internal and external) Plus deliverables on those areas including defining terms with practical examples of where those have come up in the daily work. The she has her summer reading list - which includes one page deliverables on the texts.

Lastly, she’s tasked with putting together her one page Resume from her CV, researching 8-12 women in their mid to later stages of their careers, and reaching out to ask for some early mentoring in the form of casual meetings to discuss their educational background, their career paths as well as insights and advice - each meeting has its own deliverable.

Plus she has trips to Austin (UT-McCombs) and Indiana IU-Kelley) lined up - with a Women’s Leadership Institute program at Kelley end of next week.

She seems ā€œpretty chillā€ about it, taking it in stride… and quipped back at me when I said she had a ton of stuff going on before the start back at school in late Augustā€¦ā€œDad, how do you eat an elephantā€¦ā€ as she was walking out of the room.

ā€œHey, thats my dadism!ā€

That’s quite the list! Have read quite a few of those over the years. It’s a lot for one summer, especially with the Wealth of Nations thrown in!!

I believe Wealth Of Nations and Art of War are ā€œbonusā€ texts - so she might not get to those. She’s a pretty prolific reader, and has already knocked out 3 in this first week and midway through another one.

Whoa, that’s a lot of work! But your daughter sounds super motivated and organized, which will serve her well in life.

And on the other end of the spectrum, mine worked on her tan for a bit (trying to blend her summer camp farmer’s tan), watched a WNBA game, and is now napping

Is this a school assignment?

I totally forgot about that, but do remember now. I’ll blame it on being tired and way too hot! Lol.

I marched in college (not for Alabama) and it was the coolest experience. Nothing beats the energy in the stadium on football Saturdays!

I tried to get D26 into dance team (she was a dancer), colorguard, drum corps or the like, but she had zero interest.

Mine has a wicked goggle tan from swimming outdoors. Her summer has been swimming, working on her college essays, helping me out with my side job, and napping.

@crapshooter wow, that is a busy summer! I think S26 would be exhausted just reading about it  The internship sounds great though!

@ECCA2026 Agnes Scott was the one that got away for me when D22 was looking at colleges. We never got to visit but did a lot of virtual events with them and every interaction was so positive and my takeaway was that it would be an amazing school.

I’m hoping we feel the same way when we visit.

Internship - It’s ā€œfull time plusā€ for the summer. Half of it is paid for being at a small business 2+ days a week (in the areas of Operations, Finance, Marketing which is entry level cleaning, maintenance, stocking, inventory ordering and checking in and social media monitoring - facebook, websites etc) the other half is unpaid personal development split between the reading list deliverables and the professional contact developments and early mentoring / advising.

Dropped C26 at CPSLO for the workshop/camp. Lots of nerves but hope they are having fun. Their roommate seemed sweet enough. We left after an intro session and I hope they are meeting people (they are naturally pretty introverted) and having fun!

To my surprise, I didn’t like the campus. I’m not sure what I was expecting but it left me cold. The buildings (at least that we saw) looked modern and well-maintained and nice from that aspect, but it all felt a little…soulless. Maybe not the best time to judge as it’s summer break, and I know students who have loved studying there. It just didn’t do it for me.

That is fabulous that your daughter got to do band since 7th grade! If my son had that option he’d do the same!

My son feels the same way about college marching bands as he’s heard from college friends that it’s a huge time commitment. He’s going to keep an open mind though and see if it’s possible, should he end up at a school with a marching band. He has told me that not having a marching band is not a deal breaker for him as he is considering SLACs that have his desired major - English with Creative Writing focus or a Creative Writing major. He’s looking at both SLACs and public colleges, so he’s keeping options open!

What is your daughter planning to study in college?

I appreciate the insight into marching band in college! So good to know! My son is currently in a HS marching band and may be considering joining MB in college - it all depends on where he decides to go! He loves HS MB so much and is already realizing how much he’s going to miss it.

Hi, there! Welcome to the chat!

My son is currently at Kenyon College for their Young Writers Summer Residential Workshop. Coming from the suburbs of Washington DC, rural Gambier was slightly a culture shock for us when we first visited back in April, but our second visit (this past weekend) was less shocking as we got used to the wide open fields surrounding Gambier and the serenity. The campus is beautiful, magical, other worldly in a way, and inspiring. My son is considering Kenyon for their English/Creative Writing major. His 2 week stay there will inform him if rural Gambier is for him or not, so we will see in 2 weeks!

@TheMonaLisa cool. We’re actually visiting Kenyon later this week, I guess while your son will still be there. Looking forward to seeing it. None of us have ever lived anywhere remotely rural or in the Midwest. So, will be a lot to take in.

Wonderful! Would love to hear what you think! FYI, rain is expected this week at Gambier. Safe travels!

D26 had a mini breakdown over the weekend because she’s stressed out about all she has to do this summer.

It really is a lot, I almost wish I hadn’t pushed her to get a job. But I thought it would be nice add to the college application.

So she’s got the job as a camp counselor at The Ecotarium (it’s like a nature/science museum for kids) which is full time through August 15. She has to do her extended essay for the IB diploma (she’s brought a whole set up home from school with a microscope and everything, has to conduct her experiment and write a 4000 word paper). She has summer reading - a book called The Shock Doctrine which is 700 pages of non-fiction heavy reading. She has to prep her interim assessment for global politics which involves reaching out to and interviewing stakeholders on standardized testing policy at the state level. Then her biology teacher just emailed with a summer homework assignment to read 50 pages in their text book and have a proposal for the interim assessment for that class.

And that’s all on top of writing the common app essay, which I’m absolutely adamant needs to at least be in decent shape before school starts at the end of August.

In happier news, she took the SAT for the last time in May, and her score jumped from 1510 to 1570!
