For sure. With 82 kids applying from their high school alone last year, a decent population to look at. Everyone here knows it is a good school but their low acceptance rate is a reflection of the free app waiver, excluding the abroad starts and no essay. We weren’t going to pay full price but it’s a good school and fit for some.
Congrats!!! What a burden off her chest!!!
That’s great! Mine finally seems to have a topic she’s excited about. Now she needs to sit down and write.
She had a draft done before summer break, but received feedback from the school counselor a couple weeks ago that the topic wasn’t really ideal. (I am a little peeved that feedback on topics wasn’t provided before drafting, but what do I know….)
How awesome to have the task complete. Congrats to your daughter!
Mine has an ACT outlier score of 29 in English with a 33 composite (35 math, 35 science, 32 reading). I signed her up for a re-take and she literally refused to go that morning. Said she was comfortable with her 33. I bit my tongue and let her skip —- mostly because she had done zero prep between tests, so I had no reason to expect her to do any better. What’s the expression: You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make them drink?
Oooh I’d be so annoyed at that! Yeah, our college counselor did encourage the students to run ideas by her before they started drafting. D26 did so – but her topic isn’t controversial at all, pretty basic but showcases her personality well.
Another 16 hr of weekend work for the kid is done and we are eagerly awaiting the release of AP scores tomorrow. This weekend, D26 said she’s ready for senior year to start.
AP test results are in!
5 in lang
5 in APUSH
1 in physics 1
How does a kid end a class with a 96%, enjoy it, have the teacher excited to write a letter of recommendation and score a 1? We can only laugh. She’d signed up for AP physics 2 for senior year. Maybe we’ll forgo the test. She likes the subject so
AP scores are out! Finally! D26’s played out like this:
AP Calc AB - 3
AP English Lit - 3
AP Human Geography - 4
APUSH - 4
AP Psychology - 4
AP Spanish - did not take AP exam
If she were to enroll at U of A, she’d enter with a total of 40 units of course credit based on the chart they have on their website of what the course equivalents are. Univ of Tulsa would be 46 units. UT-San Antonio would be 38 units.
D26 is totally relieved at getting the 3 on the Calculus exam. Her 11th grade AP exam scores brings her GPA to:
- cumulative (grades 9-11) UW GPA = 3.55
- cumulative W GPA = 4.24
We’re pretty stoked about this!
AP Lang - 5
AP Com Sci Principles - 5
APUSH - 4
Physics 1 - 3
Happy with these scores! The AP Physics class was also dual enrollment at a 4-year University, so she got 4 college credits (Physics 111 + Lab) regardless of scores with a B grade.
D26 is now totally done with all things AP! No more AP exams, no more AP classes. She’s looking forward to senior year! WOO!
My D26 only had two AP classes –
5 on AP Calc AB
5 on AP Physics 1
Woo! She’s away at camp but said everyone logged in and checked their scores at 8am, LOL. She did feel pretty good about both exams after taking them.
She’ll have three AP classes next year – Lit, Bio and Calc BC.
(She had APUSH last year – also a 5.)
Mine refuses to check. She’s at practice, has a couple of meetings afterwards. Maybe this afternoon. Maybe.
Wait, do you think there’s some error? That doesn’t seem right?
I think the teacher can ask to see the test if you think there’s some discrepancy.
I have my kid’s College Board password, but I knew she’d be super irritated if I checked this morning – and it sends her an email if I login to her account, LOL – so I sat on my hands and waited for her to text me.
My niece got A grades both semesters in AP Calc, and got a 1 — I think test anxiety, grade inflation, and/or poor teaching can combine for a bad AP score but good grade. The good news is AP scores are self reported, so the grade is way more important!
Yep. If I snoop, she’ll know.
Grade inflation is real. I grilled all of D26’s AP teachers about it at conferences and while none of them explicitly stated that they were overly generous with curving exams and allowing retakes to improve grades, they did acknowledge my concern.
Mine got As or A+s in all her AP classes, so I’m curious to see if those grades actually reflect her mastery of the content.
Mine struggled all year with AP Physics – granted, there was a weird situation with the teacher leaving mid-year – so she was thrilled to squeak out an unweighted 91 in the class. The teacher was really generous with curving and allowing test corrections toward the end of the year.
But D26 was the only junior in the class, and the seniors ended several weeks early, so she got a lot of focused attention and time in the last few weeks to review for the exam. I think that made all the difference. But I don’t think she’ll ever take another physics class if she can help it!
Mine refused to take AP physics, just honors.
Good choice, lol.
Our school did something weird with the science curriculum, so mine had honors physics as a freshman. Everyone hated that class and did poorly – most freshmen are not ready for physics – but mine for some reason vibed with the teacher and did well.
She totally planned to take AP Bio junior year (having never had any bio before) – but they wouldn’t let her because she’d never had any level of bio before. Never mind that the reason for that is because they changed the curriculum. Now they’re letting her take AP Bio cold next year – because she matured tremendously in the last year? (I dunno, I’ll be glad to be done with this school and its reasoning.)
The school limits students to six total AP classes in high school, so she wanted to reach that max to show rigor, thus the AP Physics this year.
