Michigan has a fantastic program through the school of information. Prospective students | umsi https://share.google/vYtKPsRHGXDyP07gz

I know a girl that just graduated and is now working for PWc

All I am going to say with Michigan. “All hands on deck” for the regulars. You know who you are :joy:.

  • Unlikely (under 15% chance of admission)
  • Reach (15–40% chance of admission)
  • Target (40–70% chance of admission)
  • Likely (70–95% chance of admission)

Just talked to Michigan undergraduate admissions. They more or less just got the information also. They are not sure how many people they are taking ED. They also don’t know 100%if those kids postponed are going into EA or RD. But from my conversation it seems like RD.

More to come. They are reviewing their metrics. This year will be an experiment for sure.

Thank you for this! We’ll take a look.

I think Michigan might be a little overwhelmingly big for her – and, Georgia Tech has a very similar program, and it’s in-state and cheap for us. So if she applies to a big state school, it will be that one.

Nice. I was just showing you that the school of information, that lots of schools have, has this program. It is a in demand program also. Good luck to your daughter.

Your daughter may want to look into Information Sciences since she’s interested in working with UX/UI. My son at Pitt is considering minoring in Info Sci and loves their UX/UI Club! He’s learned so much from that club!

But if your kid isn’t into coding as much, that major at RIT sounds like a good fit. At Pitt, there are students who major in Info Sci and Studio Art and/or obtain a Digital Studies and Methods Certificate | Dietrich Arts & Sciences Undergraduate Studies.

We looked at this briefly when we thought C26 might spread their net a bit wider than architecture. How do people get to RIT from the west coast, though? It seemed like logistically it’s a pain (iow, no direct flights).

You’ve seen the Creative Technology & Design program at Boulder I presume?

Our safety is kind of last resort even though it’s a good school. All I can say is that I tried really hard to find some that might tell us early (rolling or EA). I figure if we don’t get something positive there….she can apply to a few others and widen the net. I wish we had more targets but her teacher thinks she has a good shot at the list we have.

ETA: if they really don’t love their safeties maybe keep looking for one that might work? And add a lot more targets to improve the chances of having another good option? Also run all the NPCs you can and make sure most of the list looks good per NPC and your budget.

I imagine you’d have to take a connecting flight somewhere that flies into Rochester? Funny, that’s one of the pluses of the school for D26 – there are easy direct flights to Rochester from Atlanta, and then the school is like a 15-minute Uber from the airport.

But we run into the same problem with Worcester (WPI) – she’d have to fly into Boston, get a bus to the train, take the train for an hour, etc. We just discovered she could fly through LaGuardia and connect to the tiny airport in Worcester, but I don’t know if that’s a tiny puddle jumper type plane or what.

So, my kid is being particular about location – she doesn’t want to go west of the Mississippi, really. It’s not a hard and fast rule, but she’s not keen on anywhere that is more than about a 2-hour flight from us.

It’s too bad because she’s missing out on a lot of good programs, but this is my anxious kid, so I’m not pushing. The fact that she’s willing to fly to go to school at all is progress (early on it was a drive away only).

Haha we have the same kid again  at first it was within a couple of hours of home. Then it was driving to SoCal is ok. Then flying is ok lol. Partly when I pointed out that door-to-door to somewhere like Boulder is not different time-wise from driving to SoCal! I’ve been pushing a little on the flights. First it was CO. Then I was, come on, Illinois is not much further  etc. They would do NYC because we have family including D19 there, but there are no good targets that offer architecture. (We looked at Fordham briefly, but the program they offer doesn’t work unfortunately.)

My kid is also missing out on a bunch of good possible programs for location reasons, albeit slightly different to yours - some are distance but also no red state (no matter how blue the campus or campus town might be, state laws matter; swing states are generally fine). So some things that might have been good targets or likelies otherwise (such as Miami Ohio)are off the table. And other colleges are off the table because they don’t offer architecture (like UNR).

One big advantage that Boulder has in the logistics sense is the round the clock bus from Denver airport to campus (and there are a number of daily flights from our closest airport to Denver, so that’s also easy). Means if a flight is late etc doesn’t matter, the ride will be there with no hassle. This kid is so invested in Boulder in so many ways i dread to think what the fallout is if they’re not admitted… collegevine has it as a safety actually but I’m so nervous about anything that’s not auto-admit these days.

Crossing my fingers on Boulder for your kiddo. Do they offer ED or EA? It would be great to find out early.

D26 is applying mostly to targets, so I haven’t been overly worried – but I know there’s no guarantee. And D22 was waitlisted at several schools that we were sure was due to yield protection, so there’s always that possibility. I think D26 will get into RIT, but getting her first choice of major is a harder task.

I hear you on the red states. Miami Ohio has a very good program in what my kid wants, but the location (and lack of diversity at the school itself) also gives us pause. It’s possibly a little easier for us because we do live in the south in a red state already. I had to drag my D22 kicking and screaming to Texas to tour Rice, lol (and then she fell in love with it).

But, yeah. It’s another reason why RIT is so attractive to my kid.

Mine has been the same way this past year. First it was Bay Area only!! Then anywhere west coast was ok (except that she really, really does not want to go to school in LA for some reason), but farther than west coast, no way!! Now… I’m hearing things like she’s all excited about McGill because it’s in an interesting big cosmopolitan city.

It’s wonderful that our kids are growing up and feeling ready to spread wings!

I feel this so hard.

D26 must ED1 as a condition of an athletic roster spot. Acceptance rate is sub 10%. There have been student athletes who have been rejected with coach support, albeit, very few. She will apply EA to our state flagship which has an acceptance rate of 18% just in case. Considering it’s not even a target, calling it her “safety” is a stretch.

She’s confident in what she’s doing. I guess I’m gonna have to trust her.

EA, but they only release decisions end-Jan (so only after all other application deadlines). If they offered ED it would be great for them, but alas, I doubt they’ll do a Michigan. They don’t seem to care about yield.

My kid is the exact same way about Smith and unfortunately Smith is not a safety for her. College vine has it as a target. I’m concerned that if she doesn’t get in she’s going to be devastated. She has a really nice safety that she likes, but it doesn’t hold a candle in her heart to Smith. And in fact, we’ve only done virtual tours because it’s all the way in Baltimore. I told her if she doesn’t get into Smith, we will make a weekend trip to Baltimore. Sigh.

I thought Smith was near Boston?

Feels like just yesterday I was over in the 2025 group and now my 2026 is getting ready. At least there is no Ross portfolio for this one. Too soon…..
