Parents of the HS Class of 2026

I don’t know, but that’s odd – I’ve never heard of a school leaving off a section of the ACT and recalculating.

I felt that way when I learned that WPI was test blind – I was like, come on, my kid’s test score is the best part of her application, lol! (They did just revert back to test optional from test blind, thank goodness.)

Thank you that’s awesome! Just showed it to S26 who was shocked music rooms are not available to everyone.

The “science not considered” is new. I suspect that’s because of the change in ACT where the new format has science optional.

I do find it useful that they break the middle 50s down by each school within the university.

My feeling about CA publics… and a couple of the CA privates who are test blind.

Yes! Re: test scores and CA publics. University of Washington, S26’s favorite target, only looks at them in a handful of cases “when candidates are on the edge” whatever that means. I don’t like “test blind”—it seems optional should suffice. Submit if they help tell your story, don’t submit if they don’t. But there are all kinds of students, and scoring well on SAT/ACT is a valuable part of the story for some kids.

Anyone know if colleges look at SAT/ACT also in the context of the student’s high school? For example, say Student has a 1200 SAT and 1200 SAT is the college’s 25th percentile, but Student’s high school average SAT is 900. Would the Student be wise not to report their SAT still? But if the Student does not report, the college might think their score is below 1200 and the Student’s high school report may show the average SAT of 900. Thoughts?

Yes, schools do look at students in the context of their high school. That said, I wouldn’t make a blanket statement about submitting the 1200. For example, if a school’s 25th% is a 1400+, I wouldn’t submit now matter how low the high school’s average.

Gotcha. But if the college’s 25th percentile is the student’s SAT score…so say it is 1400, would you submit a 1400 (high school average SAT is say, 900/1000)?

In that case I would say yes!

My kid is stressed out. Driving test is this afternoon & she’s really worried that she won’t pass. Driving test is w/a driving school, not at DMV, & the driving school has stricter requirements than the DMV does.

Then last night she also said that she’s feeling stressed out in general and overwhelmed with the thought of adulting in a year. Day-to-day life things like “How am I going to do my laundry?”, “I hardly know how to cook anything,” and “there’s, like, so many things it feels like I don’t know how to do yet!” Meanwhile, being assertive and going to talk to professors in office hours? “Oh, that’s no big deal. I can do that. It’ll be just like going to talk to my high school teachers after class.”

I tried to ease her concerns by telling her that I’ll help guide her through all of this, and we have plenty of time to prepare, and we’ll eat the elephant one bite at a time.

Fingers crossed for her driving test!

And, reassure her that everyone figures out how to do laundry. My kid who is 21 still can’t cook anything beyond eggs and grilled cheese, lol. (Microwaves exist for a reason!) For everything else, she can always call her mother and ask.

She has a varied list of direct entry and non direct entry. She also wants big, D1 atmosphere, etc. The few on her list that do not fit that criteria are because I told her to consider other options

Auburn
Clemson
South Carolina
Kentucky
Tennessee
Arkansas
Elon
Endicott
Delaware

I cannot for the life of me remember #10

we are right there with you. School starts in 13 days (what)? and fall sports season well under way at this point. D26 has several papers for IB diploma due plus applications. With Georgia Tech her #2 behind her ED. She wants to apply aerospace engineering so I understand what you are saaying with “she should get in but that competitive major…”

UGA has said they “strongly weight” math and English and this year are not considering Science. Many of the others said either they want Science or if you send it they’ll include it.. UGA was the only one on D26 list who said they wouldn’t look at it.

So we just received the school calendar and D26 will not be able to attend senior prom due to a sports conflict… the tears! She had a horrible jr prom experience where she was dropped from the friend group and just wanted this to make up for it. At least she has 8 months to mentally prepare..

When do your kids return to school? we start 8/4. TOO EARLY. And happy 10 days to common app. I feel like we were just discussing jr year finals and AP exams and here we are so close to senior year and application time.

First day of school is August 18 for us here! But band leadership camp starts for S26 next Monday followed by band camp, then a week of afternoon-to-evening band rehearsals and then school!

S26 has been working on the common app essay and his writing portfolio. One of his schools just shared the supplemental essay prompts. He’s waiting on a couple more so he can get started. He understands that as soon as band season starts next week it’s going to be crazy. I’m over here panicking inside lol.

Edited to add: S26’s list dropped from 14 schools to 11!

First day for us is Sept 1 (yes, Labor Day). Private school, at least D26’s, doesn’t recognize those pesky federal holidays.

First day here is September 4- we’re one of the last districts in the area to start. But volleyball tryouts are August 11 so if D26 makes the team, that’s pretty much the end of our summer anyway.
