First off is she in pain? Do you know what the actual procedure is? If you would like you can PM me. I was wondering how this got into a college thread. Lol
We saw the podiatrist a year ago. Dr said that by about the time sheâs 18, sheâd need surgery based on what her bunions looked like then and now theyâre a little more pronounced than before.
Her feet are sore when sheâs at work, despite getting her special New Balance shoes with orthotics. And over an 8 hr shift, sheâll walk about 6-9 miles back and forth through the store.
I know what the consequences down the road are of doing nothingâŠmy grandmother had terrible bunions that made it really painful all the time to walk. It was just pretty debilitating for her yet she always refused to do anything about it. So weâre pretty motivated to get this addressed.
I canât remember the name of the exact procedure that the podiatrist mentioned.
Huge exhale. After the bad experience socially at arch camp I was a little worried about C26 at the engineering workshop but seems they are already in a tight little group at the end of day 1. Also have my instinctive stereotypes questioned as how they were described was⊠the kind of people I thought much more likely theyâd find at a design-centered workshop than an engineering one! (My husband is an engineer so no one take that personally, haha.)
Itâs a long day -breakfast at 8am and then programming all through to 9pm - but they said it was so much fun that it didnât feel like 13 hours.
One mighty relieved parent here.
So 6-8 weeks recovery is about right depending on the procedure. But depending on the procedure your usually walking in a boot sorta right away. I would just trust the doctor your going to with the information given. Good luck to your daughter.
Thatâs awesome. And LOL, what if kiddo comes home saying they want to switch to engineering? ![]()
Funny about the stereotypes â my D22 has one good archi friend at school, and she is a gorgeous and vivacious Brazilian woman who has a closet full of clothes to go clubbing, which she lent my daughter when she dragged her out every night 'til the wee hours when they were in Rome together.
She has several engineering friends who are not like that.
Two dudes in particular who have full beards and claim that engineering ages them. One was a counselor at a tech camp for high school kids on campus, and the kids guessed he was 40. ![]()
Hee! Regardless, glad your C26 is having a great time and has found a group!
Now that I reread this I think your daughter is correct. Keep in mind the first two weekâs after surgery she should be icing the foot and elevating it to reduce chance of swelling. If sheâs using a knee walker I have a better idea of whatâs being done. Walmart might not be able to give her part time depending. I would have that conversation now with hr. They go through this all the time. Also keep in mind that Walmart is also Sam Club, which might be on her campus.
I would also give a month not two weekâs notice. That goes a long way. There is nothing wrong to letting Walmart know now so both you and them can plan and you know for sure what she can/canât do. With foot surgery and any chance of things falling on her foot she might need a walking boot with steel protection around the foot area. She can become a liability for them do to the chance she could injure herself on the job. This is why to give them notice so they can plan a job for her. Being on a knee walker for that long isnât good for many reasons for any age person. Talk to your doctor about other options and job as well. Good luck.
Haha, we did talk about this! I donât think it will have enough creativity for them but thatâs why itâs good to explore options now. But there are options for that, though some of the schools on the list will have to change.
D26 has returned home after her 4week art program in Ireland. She had a blast (who wouldnât
). I am waiting for her to recover from jet lag and get back into the swing of things before doing a full on debrief of everything!
She unfortunately lost weight while there- we knew that she probably would (she has ARFID so her picky eating goes beyond just picky eating!) but it was still a shock to see her scrawnier that usual. They had a chief at this program that prepared really awesome meals- but for D26- it was wasted-lol.
That was the only negative aspect-everything else was great!
So glad to hear that they are set up for an awesome experience at this program!!
My husband is also an Engineer, and we too have our expected preconceived stereo types.
I have come to learn that within the engineering groups- that each seems to have separate stereo types that usually hold true ;-). System engineers seem way more introverted than say Civil engineers⊠lol
I need to shut up lol. Theyâre designing with CAD today ![]()
Donât really know where to put this but will put it here. Chatting to a neighbor, their son got into UNC-CH (OOS) with a 3.6 GPA..which cc would probably say was impossible.
Designing with CAD was my D26âs favorite part of her construction/architecture/engineering class last year â that, and building models. But it turns out she has wild and whimsical ideas that are completely impractical in an actual building or floor plan. Imagine, lol! ![]()
Which major? Although I agree, everyone would probably recommend against applying with that GPA.
A senior from our high school with only 1 AP got into Purdue last year, forgot which major though. Keep in mind that average number of APs kids take our school is 10-11, and all high stats kids take way higher than that.
Neuroscience
D19 got into NYU with a 3.5 (3.7w) and on paper, below par of other school friends that didnât (GPA, test scores, # of APs, ECs, she didnât do physics, didnât do 4th year of languageâŠ). Obviously a reach is a reach but sometimes the college will see something thatâs more than stats on paper. Iâm sure ED helped, but again people who looked better than her on paper were rejected ED. So that had to have come from either or both of her essays and the LOR.
My Dâs favorite part of her bioengineering summer program is designing, building, and testing circuits! Itâs funny, because that is absolutely the last thing she thought she would like, but she finds it really satisfying. She thought she might prefer CAD (nope) or the wet lab biotech stuff (nope) or even coding (nope nope nope).
Online registration updates for school opens today, and yay they have changed the system and all prior info is saved. I donât think any of it will need to change so thatâs hopefully a quick update.
C26 still enjoying the engineering workshop, particularly the robotics and circuitry stuff (as well as the 3D modeling). Dadâs kid for sure (trained as electronics engineer and he still does all this for fun). And the friend group seems to be growing!
It is excruciating watching S26. Band leadership camp starts tomorrow, then band camp starts next week, and then non-stop school/band/activities until winter break! His summer is pretty much over tonight (heâs not complaining, heâs excited about marching band season). His goal this summer (before leadership camp) is to complete the Common app essay and put together a 10 page Writing Portfolio. Heâs done a rough draft and curated 5 pages of the portfolio so far. Is he really going to get it all done by tonight? We will see! Not to mention all the supplemental essays he is waiting on! Kinda wish he has an ED school thatâs a sure shot so that we can get through this faster lol. Thanks for letting me vent. ![]()
I feel you! Mine is wiped from band camp last week (tradition is for seniors to pull an all-nighter the last night and then go watch the sunrise), and she cannot get her act together now to do the summer AP Lit homework. And itâs so tedious. ![]()
So she canât even think beyond that to revising her personal statement or any application-related tasks. Ugh, this summer went waaay too quickly.
Tonightâs crisis, however, is she has horrible tan lines from camp and earlier activities this summer, and she has to take the traditional senior picture with the off-the-shoulder black drape for the yearbook soon. (Other poses in regular clothes were done previously.) I canât help with that much besides telling her to sit in our backyard naked, LOL.
(Sheâs not a spray tan girly.)
We hit a milestone today that turned me into a blubbery emotional mom in the car on the way home.
Checked in a school w/D26 to pick up her schedule & locker assignment. Weâve been doing this annual âcheck in before the school year startsâ every year since kindergarten.
Today was the very last one.
She got all the classes she wanted. Spanish Capstone classâs teacher is NOT the same teacher that she had for AP Spanish last year, so YAY for that! She & BFF have exact same schedule again this year. College Counseling class is last period of the day.
School day is 9:20 am - 2:45 pm. Thatâs a far cry from the 7:30 am - 3:45 pm from last year. Her favorite history teacher was manning the 12th grade check-in table, so we inquired about what the process is to be a TA for a teacher. Apparently, the college counseling class is going to cover that in the 1st wk of class. D24 was able to convince D26 to be a TAâŠitâs an easy way to get an extracurricular in, doesnât require much effort aside from an hour a day before or after school (i.e., by âdoesnât require much effort,â I mean âItâs easier than spending 5 hr/wk memorizing your required âscriptâ for Mock Trial & prepping for mock trial competitionsâ
).
No progress made on college app essays. Gonna have the kid do some essay brainstorming later this eveningâŠthe type where you sort of âthink out loudâ and free-write about something and donât try to edit what you say as youâre typing it out. Weâll see how that goes.
