Ok, through eavesdropping, I know that D26 is showing them all of our Star Wars stuff right now.
True.
We think it’s adorable that D26’s field hockey team is so bad, their goal is to be below average.
Ha! Well, if you’re lucky like me, and wait long enough, they move back in!
D26 just came inside and said, “They’re asking if we have any spray on sunscreen.”
No, we do not at the moment.
Just curious, How much did she get?
is getting real now. Coach wants her application submitted by the end of the month. That’s still 3 weeks from now, right? Plenty of time!
Right, all they care about is if you have food for them
She automatically qualifies for more than $20K/year just based on scores and GPA and there are other scholarships that are merit based.
After spending a couple hours going through it with a fine-toothed comb this morning, D26’s Common App is DONE. Supplemental essays written and inserted, activities section edited according to college counselor’s suggestions, etc.
We had asked one more person to lay eyes on her personal statement – an AP Lit teacher who is a close friend – but she’s been busy and hasn’t gotten to it. If we don’t hear back, not gonna stress – college counselor went through it twice, I looked at it, and my D22 (who is a linguistics major, lol) also looked at it. So I think we’re good.
Just waiting on national merit to come out this week before she can submit, as she is optimistic and listed that under honors.
Oh, and if she leaves game design as her first choice major for Miami Ohio, she’ll have to submit a 2-minute video that will be requested in her portal. But that comes later, and she isn’t 100% on that – she wants to compare it with their emerging tech major and decide for sure this week.
Otherwise, she just needs to submit all six and give receipts to the school so they can do transcripts/rec letters/etc. HOORAY. Way ahead of the game compared to my D22, lol (who, in all fairness, had a million more essays to write).
Onward to the pile of actual schoolwork!
To separate descriptions within activities did you use a semi colon or a line?
In which section? Activities?
Well done! Must be a great feeling. C26 is editing essays today…I hope they are close to being done.
yes!
Ah, okay – she actually used a combo of commas and capital letters/periods, even if they weren’t complete sentences. Not saying that’s correct, but it worked for her. For example –
Position: Clarinet Player
Organization Name: Symphonic Band/Jazz Band/District Honor
Band/LGPE/Atlanta Clarinet Day
Description: Symphonic band all 4 years, first chair 11th and 12th. JanFest in 11th.
Jazz band during club time, two concerts. Made district 13 honor
band in 10th.
My D26 did her activities very similar to this.
D26 let my wife read her common app essay today. She said it is very good and reflects who D26 is well. Such a relief for me to hear that today!
Re sending SAT scores to colleges. I assumed it was just some kind of electronic transmission of the report. What’s with the extra cost for “rush” scores that take 1-4 days? They’re surely not mailing paper copies, so what takes the extra time for non-rush?
D26 is a huge fan of Epic: The Musical. She learned this week that the 8th grade English teacher she’s TA’ing for is also an Epic: The Musical fan, too. AND the English teacher plays Baldur’s Gate (computer game) like D26 does.
AND because of Epic: The Musical, D26 is going to start reading the Iliad and the Odyssey! Makes my nerdy mom heart happy.
It’s just a way to squeeze more money out of us, I think…
I asked my D22 about this some time ago because I think you had mentioned it before – because she’s an avid musical theatre kid (is obsessed with Starkid shows, for example) AND a Classics major (Illiad and Odyssey are her jam, lol).
She said, “OMG yes, I totally know it, but it’s one of those things that everyone else knows, but I’m late to the party – I gotta get on that.”
