Parents of the HS Class of 2026

Yes. So would a student who worked as a stage hand, usher, or in any other not for academic credit role.

Question for the seasoned parents on here!! My Daughter who is a junior in H.S signed up to take the SAT in October, apparently her core group of friends are taking it to get an idea of where they stand before they officially take it in the spring at School. My concern is that unlike her friends who have been studying for it all summer she has been busy skating, coaching skating Camps posting on Tik Tok I am happy that she is just enjoying her summer. Generally she is lucky and tests in the 99th percentile ( PSAT 10 was 1490 she did not do any prep for it ) but I assume that the SAT covers material she is going to learn in her junior year and therefore her SAT score will reflect that. Will a low Sat score hurt her or do colleges just look at the highest SAT score ? Should I advise her not to take it until the spring ?

It depends on the college. Some highest score, some superscore, some want to see all scores.
Edit: like below I think most do superscore

For a strong test taker I don’t think there is much risk. Most colleges seem to super score these days and allow for self reporting.

Thanks I appreciate this comment, I will advise her that she might want to wait until spring to take it

Ok thanks good to know, I am new to all the testing

Thanks @Aejmom and @sbinaz . X26 has been taking part in school musicals every year in high school (actually since 6th grade other than the year they got Covid canceled)..l don’t know why it never occurred to us before that it would count as an EC!

Have her give it a go in Oct to see how she does. Then if she’s not satisfied with the score, she could retake in spring.

Getting a high score is not a must have to getting admitted to college. There’s tons of schools that are test optional.

Georgetown will require all scores. Otherwise, most every school will superscore so multiple tests aren’t punitive from that perspective.

Great score on the PSAT 10!

Has she already taken algebra 2? If so, she should be relatively well prepared to take the SAT in October. There will likely be some trig, but the majority of the math questions should material from algebra 2 and earlier.

With regard to English / reading, that is mostly already baked into her outcomes. Some study may be beneficial, but her score will not likely be affected.

Will her 11th grade psat in October be before or after her SAT?

Went to S26 back to school night and learned that 100% of his AP Chem class have passed the AP exam last year and his AP Calc AB teacher’s class has a 97% AP exam pass rate from the past year. I’m glad he has excellent teachers that will contribute to his academic success. His AP Chem teacher mentioned that his class usually has 20 students but this year he has 60 students signed up for his AP chem class. I guess with SAT/ACT being optional for some schools, having a competitive GPA and taking rigorous courses will be the main deciding factor for these top tier schools, (along with other factors of course). S26 is taking 5 AP classes this year, I bought him all the AP prep books he needs this year so he can be set up for success. We are working on creating a better study/sleep schedule so he can prioritize his time better, as this may be his most challenging year.

Thank-you @MidwestPack her school does integrated Math for freshman and Sophomore year( I know it hurt them a little on math team because it was a mix of the math disciplines.)I think by the end of Sophomore year they essentially are done with algebra II but no idea with all the different names for math! She is taking AP pre Calc BC this year. Not sure if AP pre Calc. is the equivalent of algebra II. The Sat is scheduled for Oct 5th so it will happen I think just before the PSAT. She will be applying to a harder major to get into in college Biomedical engineering so I wanted to see if it was a good idea or not to take the SAT early. I know her friends prepared for it this summer their level of academic intensity far surpasses my daughters.

@collegeroyalty 5 AP’s definitely sounds intense. You must be at a prep school or private school I have never heard of any students taking the AP exam before taking the Class especially in a difficult subject like Chemistry. AP chemistry is the class my daughter is most looking forward to this year!!

Precalculus is a higher level course than Algebra 2. If your daughter is taking precalculus this year she has had most, if not all, of the math on the SAT.

If your daughter wants to prep for the SAT a month and a half is ample time. Khan Academy is an excellent resource for self-study. If she doesn’t want to prep, the worst that happens is that she gets a lower score than she’d like and she retests later.

@Aejmom thank-you I have no idea what the actual curriculum is in any of her courses!

I am in MA and work in a school. I had audiology students from Northeastern audiology and speech language working with me and they were great. Lots of good programs out there.

My understanding is that the PSAT and SAT are quite similar in formatting. So you could consider the October SAT as prep for the PSAT, as familiarity with the test helps to improve scores. And the PSAT this year is the one that ā€œcountsā€, i.e. could end up getting National Merit status from, which many colleges will give very substantial scholarships for.

My daughter did this….she ended up in the ensemble and said she spent ton of time sitting around doing nothing when she could have done homework…so she was miffed! Behind the scenes might be more fun since you learn tech skills.

He hung out with his roommate all yesterday so that’s a good sign they are getting along.
