We did both FAFSA and CSS profile for D22, knowing we wouldn’t qualify for any need-based aid. And she landed at a private school that doesn’t really give out much merit, so she didn’t get that, either – although they did ask for CSS to award merit (I think). It was a giant pain.
We didn’t bother filling out either for her in subsequent years, nor did we do FAFSA for S25, who is at an inexpensive in-state school with a state merit scholarship – but they didn’t need full FAFSA for that, just one quick form. He will continue to get that if he maintains a minimum GPA (we’ll see, lol) – but unclear if we need to do FAFSA to keep that going, or at least that other form? I need to look into it.
We’ll be filling out both for D26 – she’s applying to a handful of private schools who do give good merit, so just in case they’re needed, we’ll have them.
D26 has a giant project due in class this Wednesday, so all focus is on that this week. Then she’s off Friday and Monday for fall break, so she needs to work on her required video for one school, plus we need to revisit whether she’ll be submitting any more applications. She submitted six. But there are still three schools that were “maybe” that she never made a final decision on. I’m not sure if it’s worth it or not, because she has a very good shot where she did apply, which were the favorites.
Well, darn it. I’m an idiot. Our flight gets into Dallas on Thursday at 12:30, not 10:30. I blame Google Calendar for showing the arrival time (for when the plane lands) in MY time zone. There go my plans for us to tour the UT-Dallas housing before we pick up D24. We will have to settle on doing a quick drive-through of campus instead. So close, yet so far!
Hallelujah! We have a finished draft of the Common App essay over here! His essay coach is coming over tomorrow and I’m sure they will work on it some more as it’s slightly over the word count… BUT! There is a draft and he is proud of it!
It’s now tempting to pick schools solely based on their having no supplemental essays.
I know, right? I’m frustrated by this! But there’s logistical reasons why it’s probably not going to happen. it’s an hour’s drive to D24’s college and then another 3 hr drive to Tulsa from there. AND we’re taking D24’s roommate out for ramen & sushi for an early dinner before we hit the road to Tulsa AND the ramen & sushi place is in McKinney, TX (~35 min south of D24’s college). AND I don’t want to be getting to the hotel in Tulsa at midnight or some late hour. If the plane were to land when I THOUGHT it was, all the planets would align properly…but no! Alas, that will not happen.
No worries, lol! I’m still curious to hear your impression of UT Dallas (however quick). We’ll definitely have to visit ourselves if it becomes a serious contender.
And OMGosh I feel you – getting my D26 to write anything in a timely fashion takes years off my life. It’s such a struggle for her. I started sitting on her in June to get it done, lol.
S26 was accepted to Oregon State for CS exactly one week after submitting application. It’s an important safety option for him. I knew it was rolling admission, but caught off guard at how fast they processed the application.
S26 also received a quick acceptance yesterday, his first, from UMN Twin Cities, CSE major. We were pleasantly surprised as his app was processed in 5 days. Feels good!
Never thought I would say this but I miss the days of marching band. DS24 was my marching band kid. He has gone on to the UD marching band and still loves it. But last year we only made it for 2 performances and this year only 1. Just not the same!
Yes, but only one of the schools on D26’s list has a supplemental essay. She does have to send a portfolio in order to be considered for artistic merit scholarships so that will be something she’ll need to work on, but she can use the same portfolio for every school.
My parents had to settle with watching me march on TV. I was able to get them tickets to a bowl game, that was the only time they got to see me march collegiately in person.
I haven’t counted but my kid probably also has around that many, possibly more. I know one school has 6 (she’s actually done with those!), one school has none, and all the rest have 1 to 3 I think.
