Parents of the HS Class of 2026

Thank you for this update! Yeah, I was a little afraid that’s what it would feel like – and unfortunately, I don’t think that’s going to be the right fit for mine, either. She did apply, though.

We went to the movies here in Tulsa tonight to see that Demonslayer anime movie. On the way back to the hotel, D26 said again how friendly and helpful the cybersecurity professor was. He really made an impression on her. :slightly_smiling_face:

Headed back to TX in the am. I think we’re gonna sleep in tomorrow and have a late breakfast at a diner on Route 66 before we hit the road.

Is the commuting 60 minutes or more a day supposed to be one way or round trip? D26 definitely commuted more than 60 a day, but not one way. I didn’t even know commute was something one would put down.

Well, no answer yet from the school she was waiting to hear from. It has always been the second Friday in October for the past several years and this year they decided to change it up. So we now have no idea when a decision is coming but should definitely know by next Friday. Waiting is hard.

Common app doesn’t specify. Schools are trying to understand the student’s circumstances that impact their daily lives. So, if the commute is 60 minutes total per day and it does impact the student’s ability to study and/or engage in ECs, then they should check the box.

right there with you. checking email at 6, 7, 8…. not D26 first choice but these kids are ready for some sort of (hopefully positive) news after all this hard work.

Okay what schools release decisions this early? (Only if you’re willing to share, lol.)

D26 applied to two rolling schools – Pitt and UT Dallas, but both applications were completed in the last couple weeks, so it will likely be weeks yet until we hear back. No idea when.

After that, we should hear from Georgia Tech at the end of the first week of December. It’s not her first choice, but it’s her most reach school, and it would be a fantastic one to have in hand. Hoping it’s not an outright rejection (could be), but a deferral is very likely.

Same! This is the first time any of my kids applied somewhere ED, so I am very nervous about making such a commitment. Both D26 and my husband seem pretty chill about the decision, but I am a bit :grimacing:

Just Pitt for D26. She looked at Seton Hall as well, which also does rolling admissions, but didn’t like it. Everything else will be mid December at earliest.

for us it’s Auburn any day now, then UGA (11/21) and GT (12/5-ish).

We have Pitt already. And Iowa pre-nursing (there is a separate application and interview for direct admit seats, which will not be decided until February). The next should be Creighton, which begins rolling out decisions in early November. After that, it is mostly mid to late December, with a few regular decisions in March.

Auburn here! Was really hoping it was yesterday and so disappointed it wasn’t!

Oh gosh I would do so much different. I had zero guidance. Applied to 2 schools: Brown and Clark. Waitlisted at Brown, and landed at Clark. It worked out just fine of course! But I really should have spread a wider net!!

How many of you are going to be empty nesters after your 2026? We are. We just deposited on a bucket list trip (Antarctica) that hasn’t been possible yet as it would mean parents away for 2 weeks during school term.

Technically we will be, but I don’t know how “empty” our nest will be in reality… we still have S23 showing up at our house all the time!

We will be! This is provided D22 gets a grad school admission or finds a job and doesn’t end up back at home, lol. (Fingers crossed.)

I’m looking forward to traveling – an Antartica trip sounds amazing. Our kids all want to go to Japan, so I’m hoping to plan that trip as a family at some point. As far as where DH and I might go without them, I don’t know yet. I would like to do an Outlander tour of Scotland, lol, but he might be bored to death. (Although I could probably leave DH to play golf every day at a different course in Scotland, and he would be thrilled. :joy: ) I’d like to go to the Galapagos islands, but that’s another one that the kids might kill us if we go without them.

My parents went to Hawaii two weeks after I went away to college, and I’m still salty, lol. And I have still never been to Hawaii!

Hmm, these are things to ponder after all this college application stuff is done.

We did Galapagos a few years ago - it’s fabulous for a family holiday, I would definitely take the kids. We did a land-based tour which was both cheaper than cruise and I think worked a lot better for our family. (You still spend plenty time on boats! But having a hotel/beach base each night was preferable for us.)

Last (I hope) essay is done so last common app application should be submitted this weekend. Then there is a reasonable amount of time to get the CSU app done.

We will be empty nesters after D26 heads off to college. I’m hoping to do a girls trip to WDW with my sister for the Epcot fall food and wine festival. She’s not a big Disney fan like I am but it’ll involve staying 5 days at Animal Kingdom Lodge in a Savannah view room…sleep in, go on a few rides at one park, go through food booths and all that at Epcot, lather rinse repeat. No children to whine about the wait for the next ride and no spouse to complain about the cost and why do we even have to go on vacation.

Thank you for mentioning this! I was actually dragging my feet looking into it because I don’t do well on small boats – I get seasick easily. But now I’m sitting here googling land-based Galapagos tours, LOL.

I can dm you the details of the company we used. They had fabulous guides.
