Sorry to hear
ahh that sucks sorry to hear that. but at least she tried and getting rejected early helps build confidence.
Thank you so much, thatās extremely helpful!
Let me know how it goes! Kumon is a great place to work
I think part of the problem w/the Humane Society volunteer thing is that we live in a big metro area and a TON of high school students all want to get volunteer hours for NHS or whatever by working with animals. Therefore, thereās a lot of competition for a small # of spots. As it is, itās only a semester-long thing and only for a max of 24 volunteer hours AND you had to submit 2 letters of rec and answer a bunch of short answer essay questions on top of that. AND D26 doesnāt have a long laundry list of rock star things on her resume that sheās done in the community.
There are smaller one-off animal shelters here and there, but none of them appear to accept regular ongoing/recurring 16-17 yr old volunteers. Or if they do, theyāre all full and donāt need extra people. County animal control requires you to be 18 in order to volunteer, so thatās out.
Itās ok. Everything will work out in the end. For example, D24 did about 10 different job interviews for part time jobs before she got hired somewhere for a part time paid job.
(thinking out loud some more on the EC topic):
D26 is interested in learning about computer programming/coding. Is there a club for that at her HS? No. There was a few years ago back when D24 was in 9th grade, but the faculty advisor for it wasnāt very helpful and it was all online at the time (thanks to COVID) and the advisor said it was basically an hour once a week for kids to bring their PCs and work on their own programs. But the advisor didnāt really have any coding/programming skills to be able to guide them or help them. 2 yr ago, that club went bye bye.
D26 will take a python programming class at our local community college next summer. Thereās no programming class at our HS due to lack of a teacher to teach AP Comp Sci A.
Iām going to propose to D26 that she consider doing something individually, like take a % of her part-time job earnings to buy stuff for veterans in need (sort of ties into her love of US military history). Stuff like:
- lamps
- microwaves
- pots & pans
- dishes, silverware, cooking utensils
- personal care items
- new clothing like socks, underwear, elastic waistband shorts, etc.
When I was in high school I volunteered at the veterinary office we used for our cats. I went a couple days after school and Saturday mornings. I cleaned the exam rooms in between visits, walked the dogs, cleaned the cat cagesā¦maybe she could contact some local vet clinics and see if they would allow her to do something like that?
Heard from D26 during her lunch period today via text msg. She said that 1 of the teachers goofed and didnāt turn in the letter of rec on time for the Humane Society application. Teacher feels terrible about it, is going to email the Humane Society to hopefully plead for a 2nd chance. This particular teacher is one of my kidsā favorites. Weāre not mad about it. Stuff happens like this sometimes and itās not on purpose.
Pretty sure that weāre going to plan a visit to Univ of Tulsa for D26. Either tail end of her spring break in March or early next fall during senior year. Univ of Tulsa is only a 3 hr drive from where D24 is attending collegeā¦and D24 is on the same week off as D26 is, so we could just all 4 of us go and then hang out a bit longer in Tulsa and around D24ās college town. Right now, Iām leaning toward the spring break trip.
Life happens but sucks that the teacher dropped the Ball!! Good to start those college visits we need to start our plan for visits. What does your daughter hope to study at Tulsa?
Well, donāt know yet that sheāll like the school until we visit, but for the moment, sheās interested in majoring in cybersecurity and history.
D26ās interview at Taco Bell went well. She has to turn in a copy of a state food handlerās certificate and then theyāll offer her the job. Woo!
My DD16 took it. She did notice that the 2nd module was harder. She did well, though.
Thatās great news! My kid starts a new job this week too. Heās going to be teaching swimming a couple times a week.
Is anyone else planning to take college trips this fall? S has a 4 day weekend in October, and weāre thinking of visiting a few schools.
Congrats to your daughter! My son also did pretty decent, considering how he was doing in the few practice tests he took. I am pleasantly surprised, and very happy for him of course.
We are trying to figure out if we can squeeze any in!! Most of our D26ās school choices are not close to home and she coaches learn to skate on Friday / Saturday it is always difficult for her to find another coach to sub
We have the opposite problem. My kid coaches Sunday and Monday.
Lol Sunday is the only day my daughter doesnāt coach or teach private lessons no ice time on Sunday!!
We have had several conversations about her cutting back on her commitments!! Luckily for travel purposes she can move or cancel her privates lessons. She is currently teaching Learn to skate on Monday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday for the next 8 weeks but we told her that she has to drop the Monday Wednesday after this session. Thank goodness she has her Drivers license and we donāt have to drive her everywhere anymore!!!
Wow thatās a lot! My kid plans to teach learn to swim classes on Mondays, and then private lessons on the weekend afternoons. Heās also coaching Special Olympics on Sunday morning. Heās running cross country this fall, so thatās all he can fit in.
I agree that the driverās license helps a lot!
My Hubby coached XC at a local college until the kids got older and he didnāt want to miss out on supporting them in their activities. He was a little disappointed that neither kid likes to run!! Good luck to your son this season
Probably going to visit U of A some time this fall. Would prefer to do it on a weekday but D26 really really doesnāt want to miss any school days this year. Thereās also 2 colleges in TX I want her to take a look at.
