Parents of the HS Class of 2026

A free bike would convince my (current HS Freshman) son to ED somewhere. He’s not big on decisions, so that would be a big plus, lol!

D26 still hasn’t submitted the video for one of her apps, which is due at 11:59pm today. Actually there was some question whether an 11/1 deadline meant by last night or tonight – and she told us that she did some “soul searching” and determined it meant tonight.

And then she spent every waking hour this week sewing her Halloween costume which was a mashup of both looks Zelda wears in Echoes of Wisdom. She wore it last night for an away game with the band and didn’t get home until midnight.

Today the cast list for the spring musical came out. She is playing a couple of bit parts, which she is totally fine with. (Hoping for a better role in the spring play.) But she spent an hour perseverating about which of her friends did not get cast in the roles they wanted, and how unfair it was, and how they’d be sad, etc. (I get it because my older one is a theatre kid, so we’ve witnessed the deep disappointments over the years.)

But come on kid, there are college apps to tend to! (And STEM to catch up on tomorrow. It never ends.)

Classic! I feel like that’s something my son would say.

Her costume is amazing! I’m really impressed that she made that herself.

Thank you! I think it’s supposed to be pants, but she made it out of curtains she bought at Goodwill and didn’t have enough fabric, lol.

It’s funny, many people don’t realize that a facet of ADHD is getting hyper-fixated on something to the exclusion of everything else. But that is so my kid – if she gets an idea in her head for something she wants to do, then she’s going to make it happen at all costs.

We often joke about using this super-power of hers for good and not evil. :joy:

I am “blessed” with this superpower. Unfortunately, many times, despite my best efforts it stays stuck on evil (for me or my obligations), rather than good. But, when it is stuck on good it can be amazing!

Apparently UT-San Antonio uses STARS so D26 has to set that up even though her high school already sent them her transcript.

STARS auto-populated from the common app for C26 when they applied to UMN (I’m not sure if UMN initiated that or it somehow otherwise automatically happened), but a number of entries were incorrect. If she tries to set it up and is told there is an account already she should be able to access it via “lost password”, but then make sure she checks it thoroughly. For C26 we had issues both with the in-progress senior year courses not being reported and with a number of subject areas being wrong (the wrong math or history subset, putting an elective under “English” etc)

Ughgh what a pain. Mine did not enjoy setting this up for Pitt and ran into a bunch of glitches – I had to help her get it sorted. (As @SJ2727 mentioned, it was not without errors when she tried to import the data.)

But, since my kid was accepted to Pitt, I guess it was worth it, lol! Hope it’s not too problematic on your end.

so far, so good! She’s entered all of the info and we’re going to double check it together before she hit the submit button.

Such relief… all LORs now appear as submitted in common app !!! (It did take one more reminder for that last one!) :tada:

same for us! Last one submitted just now, at almost 11pm, after one more email reminder. She doesn’t seem happy about it, but you can’t blame the kid for trying. He was stressed.

Same here, both recommenders put in letters to Schoollinks last night. Unsure if there is a step in there for the guidance counselors to then forward or if it automatically gets sent to the colleges but hoping for the best!

D26 worked all of last night to get her video submitted before midnight. I didn’t see her after 4pm – she didn’t show up for dinner – and I didn’t want to disturb her.

Finally I texted just after midnight saying “hello?” She responded that sorry, she was locked in, but video was finished and submitted by the deadline. And that she’d come down in a bit for food.

I gave up and went to bed, lol. Here’s hoping that’s all accurate, and we can move on with our lives!

I felt a wave of anxiety last night thinking, what if she missed applying to some awesome “perfect” school with EA? She is totally content with where she applied so this was all in my own head. And now the waiting begins. Thankfully there are holidays coming up that take planning and organization, so I can use my skills for that and distract myself too.

Looks like a bunch of schools that D26 had decided not to apply to sent emails saying they’re extending their ED1 deadlines. I might be kind of mad if she pushed really hard to get an app in and then they extended deadlines AFTER the deadline had passed. Or maybe I’d be happy that she got the app done? Either way, it’s interesting to see how malleable these dates seem to be.

I’m laughing a bit -because THIS morning - my kid was like - let’s swap x-school (RD) for y-school (RD). (Neither had EA). The new school has a higher admission rate and I like it better (NOT that my opinion matters –haha) – so hey, they is still time to play college list shuffle!

Presumably disappointed in the number of applications? Seems odd when some of the schools that have reported so far (like UGA’s EA numbers) have seen a surge in applications.
I would definitely be annoyed if I were a student and had done the work to submit on time. Apart from anything else, all else equal that reduces the chances of the pool of students who did submit on time/chips away at any ED advantage. (So I’d see it as different to a school who extended their EA deadline, which would still annoy me but not as much. Of course I’m not the one applying anywhere lol).

Right? There are so many schools out there it seems impossible to have been able to know about all good possible options. And sometimes it’s so random, like C26 applying to Pitt only because I kept hearing good things about it here, and now it’s probably near the top of their (admittedly short) list.
