This is true. When we went to visit UMN, it was like 50 degrees out and there were all these kids walking around in shorts and t-shirts. My daughter was like, “it’s not THAT warm out”.
Haha I was about to say the same thing in my above post that winters have been super mild the past several years but I was scared to jinx things
I love a big snow storm but don’t like dealing with the aftermath.
My kids’ idea of ideal weather: Seattle, pacific northwest in general.
We don’t have enough rain for their taste where we live (Berkeley), but when we do have rain, everyone in our family exclaims, “Such a beautiful day!”

My in-laws are from Los Angeles and they would come visit us here in MA in April when it is finally in the 50’s and the kids would be in shorts and t-shirts and my MIL would be chasing them around with jackets, socks, hats, etc. ![]()
My oldest is in Houston, and it’s so disgustingly hot and humid there for the first few months of school. So my kid will wear tank tops to class in an effort to survive, but she has to take a hoodie with her even when it’s 98 degrees outside because the a/c is jacked up in all the buildings. ![]()
One of D22’s best friends at school is from Jersey, and she gave him so much grief when he first brought a car to a campus because he didn’t know how to pump gas.
And the funniest part of that story is that my kid is one of those ridiculously bright cerebral types that is an academic rockstar, but she has trouble with, like, using the toaster. So she had written instructions in her phone for how to pump gas, which she pulled out and consulted for at least the first year she was driving. She then forwarded these instructions to her friend. ![]()
My parents immigrated here from a tropical climate – in 1970 – but lived in NYC for the first year. Then my dad’s job transferred him to South Florida. This was in the days before jetways, so my mom tells the story of feeling the giant blast of hot air when the airplane door was opened, and when they were climbing down the steps in the heat, they felt like they’d returned back home, lol.
Turks and Caicos is like this- you deplane down the stairs and as soon as they open that door you feel the tropical air coming in and it blasts you as you descend the stairs. It is always this that makes me feel like I am officially on vacation!
Haha - this is so very typical of Jersey (and I’ve heard Oregon) kids! When we took a roadtrip out of state this past summer, I actually made all my kids pump gas at least once so they’d start learning. The things we have to do to teach kids the basics!
This is so funny. We don’t live in a particularly rainy place, but I thought everyone’s default idea of a beautiful day was sunny and cloudless and 70 degrees. ![]()
We’ve been to Seattle only once – kids all loved it – but we’re not really familiar with the Pacific Northwest. My entire association is that Forks, Washington is the rainiest place in the U.S. Because, you know, Twilight.
If it goes over 65 degrees, my kids exclaim, “MOM IT’S SO HOT!” ![]()
Haaaa! They would not fare well in Atlanta. Or Houston! ![]()
It will indeed be very funny if D26 gets into GA Tech and decides that’s the place for her! ![]()
Oh, bless. Well the good news is that every single dorm has a/c – it’s unheard of here for any building not to have it!
D26 doesn’t want to go somewhere where good weather will distract her from her studies.
Did anyone else’s College prospective receive an unsolicited automatic admissions letter from Seton Hall, (starting off with “Congratulations, You have been admitted”) including a guaranteed four year scholarship of 90-110k? As far a D26 knows, she has never expressed interest in Seton Hall (or New Jersey). A $ 110k scholarship would take an estimated COA of around $ 325k down to $215k (what a bargain).
Wow! D26 here did NOT get this. She’s actually visited Seton Hall and is on the mailing list. She got an email saying that their EA deadline was approaching (I thought they were rolling but I guess not.)
When my husband was interviewing for his postdoc, he went to Scripps Research Institute. He was standing in a lab with a beautiful view of the ocean. And he thought to himself “I don’t know how anyone ever gets anything done here”. He ended up in MA (that probably wasn’t the reason, but the thought did cross his mind that it would be really distracting to work there).
I think we tossed it last night - but I will look in trash when I get home and post a photo of the letter if I can find it.
No need to dig it up. I just thought it was interesting since D26 HAS actually expressed interest and didn’t get that mailer. However, she’s gotten a few of those mailers with “expected merit awards” from other schools where she’s expressed no interest. It’s funny to see how these schools handle their marketing.
