Parents of the HS Class of 2026

Bit of a dc urban moms vibe (that website, not aimed at any lovely members of this forum) creeping in here. Beefeater, thanks for the tip earlier.

Oh man, I missed something! I don’t have to know exactly what because ā€œDC urban moms vibeā€ tells me all I have to know!

Oh yes! We want to do this, too.

I forgot to mention that we have tickets to The Outsiders (the musical) for Wednesday, which none of us have seen yet. Looking forward to that, too!

Alright, I’m just going to move on…

Wait, you haven’t seen any of Stranger Things?! Oh then you MUST go back and start from the beginning – if you love an 80s vibe and somewhat gross horror, lol. It’ll be so fun for you to then jump right into the new season.

Wait, the new season of Stranger Things is out??!! Feels like forever ago since the last one!

I think it comes out this week?!

I am only a couple of episodes in (of season 1) but so far, I think I will be hooked!!!

Yes, it’s been since summer 2022!

They’re releasing four episodes on Thanksgiving day, three episodes on Christmas day, and then the finale on New Year’s Eve. BUT from what I understand, each episode might be two hours long.

So prepare to buckle in, LOL.

We’ve all enjoyed watching as a family, but this will be quite a commitment!

I’m excited for Thanksgiving week! Kiddo is home from her boarding school, and I’m only working Monday so we’ll have lots of time to just chill together. And blissfully she has no college stuff to work on and just got that first acceptance (UD, I posted about that a couple of days ago), so she is feeling pretty un-stressed at the moment! We will go see the Nutcracker on Saturday after Thanksgiving as is our annual tradition since she turned 4! Only one we missed was Covid year!

I hope most of our kids can take a little reprieve from college stress for the week. They all deserve a break!

Two hours per episode?! That’s not an episode, it’s a movie! Thanks for the deets! We can’t wait to watch over here

I very seldom watch more than 2 seasons of anything that has a storyline that continues all the way through (so not including shows like Seinfeld for example), but I made it all the way through stranger things. I actually nearly stopped partway through season 3 but then it ramped up again.

Shows I have made it through all seasons so far, which I can almost count on one hand:
Stranger Things
Sopranos (this was a COVID binge)
The Americans (one of my all-time favorites)
Slow Horses
Spooks (I think the name was changed in the US?)
Line of Duty

Series I have really enjoyed the first season of but lost interest anywhere from 1st episode to halfway through second season are many and wide-ranging - some that spring to mind are Mr Robot, Yellowjackets, the Marvelous Mrs Maisel, Severance and the Walking Dead.

Oh, this is a fun topic! I’m not a huge TV series watcher – usually I have my nose in a book – although my husband watches everything, lol. And then I’m not a big serious drama, spy, war or mob aficionado – I prefer fantasy. I’ll take vampires or something supernatural any day, lol.

To that end, I loved Buffy, Angel, Firefly, True Blood, Warehouse 13, Chuck, the American version of Being Human, and lots of things in that realm. I have a whole huge list of more recent things to watch but haven’t gotten around to it. This is why when people ask me what I’m going to DO as an empty nester, well, I’m going park myself on the couch and watch all the things – and read all the things, too. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I did also love ā€œnormalā€ stuff like Friends, Seinfeld, HIMYM, The Middle, Friday Night Lights, Game of Thrones, Castle, Veronica Mars, Modern Family, The Good Place, Never Have I Ever, many more that I’m forgetting. (That is probably an odd collection, lol.)

But yeah, I tend to peter out on shows, too, as soon as I get bored.

I’ve been watching ā€œThe Beast In Meā€ on Netflix (I can only manage one episode a night at most…my version of a binge). Really enjoying it. Clare Danes looking anxious, a potential serial killer as a neighbor…..good stuff, kinda intense. I think I like but I’m only 4 episodes in.

That looks right up my husband’s alley – he is all about psychological thrillers, lol. I do love Clare Danes.

Oh, how did I forget Ted Lasso and Shrinking? Both are excellent – and probably universally beloved.

I finally listened to the RIT student interview on YCBK – it was really good! He was clearly intelligent and driven, and it was interesting that the interviewer asked him why he chose RIT over a name like Carnegie Mellon or Georgia Tech or MIT.

My D22 has a friend who graduated from Rice this past May in cyber security and is now working at Apple. She also had an Apple internship last summer and was asked back for a full-time position.

I think she’d corroborate everything this RIT student said - she founded a club at Rice where she was able to secure tickets for its members to attend various tech conferences across the country (where companies were offering interviews and internships on the spot).

I know it’s different in humanities and social science fields, but in tech, it does seem like the kids who get involved with the right academic clubs, get certifications and leadership experience – plus are great communicators – are the ones who successfully land the jobs.

Thanks for the rec – I’m gonna be real, I don’t love the podcast host as an interviewer – but his guests are always interesting and informative.

Oh, this is on our list, and The Girlfriend.
Mathew Rhys was in the Americans too, which reminds me we did also make it through 3 seasons of The Diplomat (Keri Russel), but I am not sure if we’ll be back for the 4th.

I am often trying to read a book and watch tv at the same time, haha. When my husband is away I almost never switch the tv on!

I stopped watching TV when Happy Days was cancelled.

I was about to ask if you’d seen those! TL is my all-time favorite series. I resisted for a long time because I didn’t know what it was about and assumed I wouldn’t like it. I cried and cried when it was over and am so envious when I hear someone is starting it for the first time. Shrinking is so good too!

And I’ve forgotten about True Blood. Loved that series and all the books.

When I first started listening to the podcast he 100% annoyed me. I actually do not know why I pushed through, but I am glad I did. I think his content is the best out there even if I sometimes still don’t vibe with how he discusses things. So many great insights and good topics on the show though.

I really hate listening to podcasts, so if there is anything interesting or useful on a podcast, I would love it if someone would summarize!

(I also hated people reading to me when I was a child. I had hyperlexia, so reading was more natural for me than talking/listening.)
