Parents of the HS Class of 2026

Hang in there. Trying to coordinate care from far away is really hard. It’s totally ok to feel overwhelmed given everything on your plate right now. We’re here with you in spirit whenever you want/need to talk about it.

I am so sorry you are going through this. I remember you talking about it previously and I am in a similar situation with a parent. Big hugs.

Re: podcasts -
In addition to YCBK, I also listen to “Get Schooled by Reeves & Ford” when it comes to college application topics. Their podcast only has new episodes occasionally. But it’s pretty balanced in terms of the points of view that they discuss.

Non-college-related, other podcasts I listen to are all Disney related. There’s the “Connecting With Walt” podcast, which is hosted by a former Mickey Mouse Club cast member. They’ve interviewed fascinating people on there. And they’ve done many different episodes covering the history of the construction of several Disneyland and WDW attractions, plus history of all of the ways that Walt Disney failed earlier in his career. History of production of various TV shows, etc., etc.

there’s also the “Disney Dish podcast,” which includes a bit of current Disney parks news then the rest of the episode covers Disney history stuff. And sometimes they bring on a current or former Disney imagineer to the discussion. 1 of the hosts is 1 of the people who started Touring Plans.

This is good to know! It’s funny, we were in London for a family vacation this summer, and we wanted to see a show – Stranger Things: The First Shadow has been playing there for some time. We considered, but I wasn’t sure what it would be like. We opted to go see Book of Mormon instead, which DH and I had seen, but the kids hadn’t.

We’ll have to make it a point to get to NYC to see it! My oldest is my biggest theatre nerd, although all three enjoy going to shows. Thanks for sharing this – it sounds so interesting!

I love that this story has spanned generations. I was a huge fan at age 11 or so – like I was writing Outsiders fanfic at that age before fanfic was a thing, LOL.

And then all three of my kids had to read it in middle school English classes. I had a whole nerdy conversation with my girls’ teacher because she met S.E. Hinton at a book signing years ago. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

(University of Tulsa, where Hinton went to school, offers a free ride for national merit – I really tried to get D26 interested by mentioning the Outsiders connection, but to no avail, lol.)

Anyhow! We all kind of scoffed when it was first announced as a musical, but then we watched one of the numbers on YouTube – where it’s raining on stage?! – and it was fabulous. I’m so looking forward to seeing it!

This is really random, but have you been a Disney fan for long enough that you remember Tour Guide Mike?

I just looked this up and will say to others that the “Reeves & Ford” is very important when searching for this one. I got a very different podcast when I just searched for “Get Schooled” :joy:

Hearing everyone talk about their podcasts is making me think that my Spotify Wrapped is dropping, lol!

I’m a big YCBK listener. I actually like the host for the most part, but I have noticed him lately talking over some guests or injecting more of his story versus the guest’s. That said, I REALLY like hearing from professional college counselors and admissions officers. Not that I don’t think the parents here have some insight, but I’m generally wary of folks that have had just a few personal experiences and then they’re advising students in the Chance Me’s, etc. I find it relatively hard to find podcasts about college admissions that I think are actually based in experience/fact.

As for the rest of my podcasts, I spent a lot of time in financial tech so have a few business podcasts and a tech one (Hard Fork, in particular, is a fav). Then, I have fallen down a rabbit hole with podcast from UChicago called Big Brains. Really interesting topics that are usually based on research that UChicago professors are doing. Neat stuff!

I was once trying to find the local company where we had bought our couches years ago – pro tip, do not search “Leather Creations” without adding “furniture.”

It sounds familiar, but I can’t quite place it.

“The College Admissions Process Podcast” by John Durante is another one I listen to occasionally. He interviews a lot of admissions reps from various colleges from all over the place. It’s a great way to find out a lot of info about a college in a relatively short amount of time.

I listened to that podcast a lot when D26 was early in the process and I was trying to get a sense of schools on her broad initial list.

Catching up on the discussions of television and Thanksgiving plans!

Oh man, I am such a child of the 1980’s as far as TV goes. I was completely addicted to television for a long time and that has only waned recently. My main criteria is that there has to be a “ship” that I can become invested in. I would say my top watches of all time are The X-Files, Castle, Firefly, and 24. (Fun fact- I was very involved with a website called Television Without Pity back in the day and I met some close friends that way. I even participated in a marathon-style event for Gillian Anderson’s charity where we would watch 12 hours of Scully-centric X-Files episodes all in one day. It was an international thing and all together we raised hundreds of thousands of dollars over the three years that we did it.)

These days it’s pretty much football, cooking shows and House Hunters. I do watch Stranger Things but the two hour long episodes seem fairly daunting. D26 is very excited though. Oh- I do watch Bridgerton, but I was underwhelmed by the last season.

As far as Thanksgiving, there is a little family drama that involves my husband and his sister fighting over who is going to host. She always wins because her husband has more family close to them and they aren’t going to travel to our house, which is two hours away. So now we just stay at home and have a low-key day of food and football. (My in-laws, who live close to us, always choose to travel to my sister-in-law’s, which drives my husband crazy, but what are you going to do?)

Same, same, same (well 2 kids and they read it in 9th here). I don’t even know how many times I have read the outsiders. When C26 was doing it and I plucked my copy off my shelf, they said “mom, how come you already have all the books we read in school”

Also, I remember when the movie came out which essentially introduced much of the 80s brat pack. I remember loving the movie, though I haven’t seen it since.

D19 can’t find her passport :woman_facepalming: she knows it’s “somewhere”… I’m terrified it was in a pocket of something she got rid of. She flies (or is supposed to) tomorrow. This kid loses things like nobody’s business…. Currently going through her apartment with a fine tooth comb, or so she says. :folded_hands:

He’s just a guy that used to do crowd calendars and touring plans and stuff – like EasyWDW and Undercover Tourist and Touring Plans.

We used to go to Disney a lot when our kids were very little (we live in road-trip distance, and my parents live a couple hours south of Disney, so they’d come up to join us). I used to love planning our trips down to the last detail (our son needed some accommodations and was challenging to travel with) – anyway, I liked Tour Guide Mike’s plans, but then he kind of dropped off the scene for various reasons. You can still find old posts discussing him.

His biggest tip for families with small children was, right at rope drop, get to Dumbo. And he’d repeat it often, like get to Dumbo, Get to Dumbo, GET TO DUMBO!

For some reason, this became a running joke in our family whenever we were on vacation and had to get to the one main thing we wanted to see. Like Get to Half Dome. It really became a thing when we stopped in Florence for like 12 hours on a Mediterranean cruise – our family group chat was called Get To The David.

Some years later, my oldest said to me, “Did you know it was called epizeuxis?” (The repetition of a word or phrase in immediate succession.) My kids are wonderfully nerdy, lol.

I don’t know why I’m sharing all this – completely irrelevant to anything here – but your mention of all the Disney podcasts reminded me of it. :joy:
