Parents of the HS Class of 2026

Yeah. Forget that. I’d tell them to buzz off.

Omg I am about to go down a rabbit hole of my own version of portal astrology.
EA school with end Jan decision date.
Got an email tonight addressed to me and DH about an info session about applying for financial aid. “ Students and families are welcome to join for an overview of applying for financial aid …..” not “prospective” students… talk me off the ledge people!

D26 is almost done with the UC application… just a few more tweaks that she still wants to do to the PIQs.

And, she decided today to just forget about the three RD schools lying in wait at the end of her list, because she has had enough, and wants to be DONE. She felt very satisfied after deleting their entries from her spreadsheet!

(This is exactly what S23 did after finishing his UC app, as well!)

My S26 is right there with your D26. He got his app in for Wesleyan last night and this evening just lost steam and had enough motivation to just log into his Wesleyan portal. He’s got 2 more RD apps - 5 essays and four 50 word essays. He said he’ll start on the “easier” one this Sunday. I can’t wait for him to be done too!

My S26 is almost done with UC apps as well. He has 5 more RD’s to go and has dropped 2 of them.

S26 submitted his UC application tonight! He has a “break” until RDs are due in January (meaning he has all of December to work on them). He doesn’t feel very hopeful about getting into a UC he likes since his ACT score isn’t in there (and honestly he prefers to go out of state anyway) so I don’t think he’ll cut down on RDs. He hasn’t heard from any EAs or his ED yet so the jury is very much still out for him. We are hoping to hear soon from Pittsburgh. His app was final on 11/4.

Maybe it’s a good sign! We got that email too (if I recall correctly which school it is based on where you’ve mentioned C26 applying).

Hah same in our household, S26 is almost done with his PIQs and I am not sure he’s even going to go through with his other apps.
He thinks he might go for a masters after he finishes undergrad, so would his undergrad school even matter that much ? Plus he really wants to be in socal so UCLA, UCSD, UCSB, UCI are his top choices and if he doesn’t get into any of them he’ll go the CC to UC route. Applying to other schools is hard to justify. One of the posters mentioned going to city college in Santa Barbara which he would love.

I can’t believe how much time/effort this process took, I spent maybe 5 hours on my applications back in the Stone Age. I recently found my old essay (you can import wordperfect format!) and god was it bad compared to what kids write today.

Mine is making similar decisions. Getting an acceptance from UD a couple days ago has accelerated it. Any school she hasn’t applied to yet is being considered for dumping based on its comparison to UD. She hasn’t actually visited there yet, so I’m trying to temper some of the purge…. But she’s really wanting to be completely done with all apps!

That’s practical of her, although I understand your concern that she hasn’t visited! My D also dumped some after comparing them to Pitt, which she also hasn’t visited… we really can’t squeeze in any visits to the eastern schools until spring, so I hope she ends up liking her unseen picks!

D26 got her first acceptance today! It is a great option, and they offered her a good chunk of merit money, making it less expensive than going to a UC instate would have been (not that she is applying to those but I still use it as a financial benchmark)! I am so excited for her. I expect the list of essays she’s doing this break is going to get chopped significantly now.

D24 and I toured and liked the area. A big plus was so much was easily walkable from campus. Good for my non-driver! Everyone I know there seems to really enjoy the campus and area. There isn’t much else around it.

I’m trying to catch up on hundreds of posts!

S26 leaves at 6:20 for school. He has to be ready to play his instrument by 6:45. It’s early! He rarely runs late, but sometimes just doesn’t hear or turns off his alarm while he stays asleep. Since it’s not common, I do wake him up if it happens. This is zero hour for jazz band. The regular day starts at 7:50.

If he rode the bus, he couldn’t do jazz band, and the bus comes at 6:45am. He’d leave the house at 6:35 or so. Adding the zero hour as a freshman seemed easy enough since it was only 15 minutes earlier for leaving the house!

He then has 7 periods for regular classes, but only 6 of them each day on a rotating schedule. Well, except Wednesdays that don’t start until 10:20 and only have 4 classes. He just joined a jazz combo band that acts like a club and it meets before school Wednesday, which is not bad at all!

In an interesting turn of events, I think D26 is now seriously considering the school that is 20 minutes away from us. The top volleyball player in our area just committed there (she was being recruited by Pitt when she was a sophomore) so D is thinking maybe it’s not such a bad school after all. LOL. They also happen to have a very good film department, so we shall see.

She will submit her final EA app this week and then may be done. She wanted to apply to at least one very far reach just to see, but she’s pretty burnt out on the whole applying to college thing so it may get dropped.

I too would be done with them at this point- so frustrating. Leaves such a bad taste and makes one wonder what being a student is like in terms of their administrative functioning, etc. Hopefully she is excited about other schools and it isn’t a big deal for this one to drop down the list.

Mine dumped a handful when she got her Pitt acceptance (although we had already visited once — and now twice). It was nice to shorten the list!

Question: Does anyone know anything about admissions at UNC-CH (besides that it’s impossible)? My D suddenly wants to apply (her grandma lives nearby). It was not initially on her list bc UNC nursing is not direct admit and admissions is uber competitive. Unfortunately, she missed the Oct 15 EA deadline, so would be applying RD. Are EA applicants heavily favored over RD (in other words, is the class basically filled in the EA round)? Or is it more like Michigan, with a lot of EA deferrals and more decisions coming out with RD? Trying to decide if it’s even worth the application fee….

It really is a relief. Even though I “knew” she’d get in, now that she actually has gotten in, I feel so much lighter this morning!
