Parents of the HS Class of 2026

Kind of. I had a thread about marching bands as he wants to continue that. But he’s kid #3 who wants mechanical engineering so I feel fairly prepared for that! His top choice has been Alabama, so that’s straightforward. I’d like to be sure we have a few others for choices in case something changes. I do need to go through the band thread again.

Sigh. I wanted C26 to do a practice SAT test this weekend. They just finished it ….and realized afterwards they had chosen another PSAT practice test rather than SAT. Oh well.

Frustrating but probably still useful!

Yeah, I figured it’s not optimal but it’s still practice.

Spur of the moment decision to go to NYC for Presidents’ Day weekend. C26 surprised by mentioning potential interest in Fordham so we’ll try slot in a campus visit while we’re there.

Which Fordham campus? Rose Hill or Lincoln Center?

So since then C26 has cooled on the idea as the program itself doesn’t have a great rep apparently, but we will still go on a campus tour as we are there and so they have an idea of comparison for later ones. With that in mind we are going to tour Rose Hill as being more traditional (I did LC with D19 and it’s not really much to tour especially if one is using it for comparison). If they do end up applying I’m not sure which campus would be best for the course. Of course the location of LC is brilliant, but it has other downsides for a freshman especially I think. C26 is familiar with what an urban campus is like as D19 was at NYU.

Only about 1/2 way through this book, but I find it interesting. The introduction alone has already been shared with D26.

Just thought I’d share and put it out there.

I’ve read that book! Loved it.

Neither of my kid’s schools offer AP classes. They offer classes that teach the AP content, or close enough that kids take the exams and do well, but not classes that carry the AP level. They also only provide a choice of levels in math and science. Their argument is that all of their classes are “honors levels”.

Kids from both schools do well in the college process, so I figure colleges can tell from the profile or the schools’ reputation and it’s fine.

I read that only 1/3 of kids end up working in what they majored in. Was also talking to my dad who went to Fresno state way back in 70s. He had a successful career afterwards had his own business and even became a university professor.

But given S26s relaxed nature so far I will probably wait until he has his applications in before I show him my college transcript with its solid 2.9 GPA or share how his grandfather was not a particularly high achieving student and we both turned out fine.

April college visits are all set. DH is taking her to see Auburn for a long weekend and then they will spend her spring break seeing JMU, UVA then flying to Texas and seeing UT Austin and TCU. I am hoping she loves JMU and TCU as both sound like a great fit for what she is looking for. I am a little concerned with how far TCU is from us but otherwise seems perfect. Will be interesting to see what she says about each school.

Oh boy, things are starting to feel real. They need to choose senior courses soon - kicked off by sending of math recommendations today. C26 is meeting the in school college counselor next week as part of the school program - they fill in an info sheet first, have the meeting, then they get a list of suggested colleges after that. It will be interesting to see what is on there and how it differs from our current list/whether it brings up any gems we haven’t thought of.

In other news, the cute kitty making herself at home in our living room and purring when I walked in was not one of ours, and my calico was not very happy at an interloper. Lol. I just put her outside - she was very friendly so I assume she belongs to one of the neighbors down the street. (If it were just up to me hey I’d keep her haha.)

Our D26 just confirmed her senior courses this week.

D26 just met with her counselor about Senior course selections as well. Midterms are done, get to breathe freely for a bit.

First semester grades came out today for my junior. 3 As and 3 Bs (one of the Bs is B- , but I’ll still take as a win). He is happy and I am happy. All the Bs were Cs till a month ago!
He is still deciding on the senior year courses.

Our public school counselors don’t help with the college list. They are always overwhelmed handling the high school stuff itself. Ours is a very large public high school. S26 has close to 700 kids in his year.

This was the case when D19 was there, but they have since added a dedicated college counseling department (one full time and 2 part time staff). The difference between the resources available to my two children and the information we are getting as parents is noticeable.

My kid’s grades just posted too – she went into finals with 6 As and 1 B – and came out with 5 As and 2 Bs. So not really a win. But also not awful with 4 AP classes this year.

What drives me crazy is that she did not study at all. Really, not even for an hour. It is beyond frustrating (and almost made me swear off CC permanently, which seems filled with only motivated students). I wish I understood what was going on. Does she really not care? Is it related to her anxiety (she is being treated for moderate anxiety)? Is there an undiagnosed ADHD component? Or is she just plain lazy? What am I missing…

Anyway, course registration for next year starts in two weeks. It’s always a bit stressful because it is hard to get the classes you want with 4500 kids. And registration time slots are assigned based on last semester’s grades, so that extra B will not help.

She didn’t study bc I imagine she’s used to getting As without studying (and she did, for the most part here too). It’s a real mindset shift to recognize that you might have to put in time when your MO for the last several years of school has worked just fine. My kid likes to play it close to the edge… and then buckle down at the end of the semester. It makes me crazy, but that’s his MO. I think it will take consequences that are markedly worse than a B to change their minds.
