D26 finally got her SAT score today (took 3 calls over the past two weeks to get the College Board to do what should have been simple—accept that she didn’t want to retake and wanted her scores released).
She ended up with a 1510, so I really feel like she could be done at that. She got an amazing 790 on reading and writing! She’s over the moon about that. She thinks she may study up and retake to try for a higher math score. I’m going to let her school college counselor advise on whether that makes sense for her. In my mind this score is enough and she should move forward to enjoy the summer without stressing about studying for this test again.
That building used to be a bookstore and I worked there when I went to law school (my law school was right around the corner, Suffolk). I’m always so sad when I walk by there and see the Chipotle!!
A Boston classic is getting cannolis at Mike’s in the North End. Bring cash, no credit cards accepted there!
That’s a fantastic score – I would think she could stop unless she’s aiming for a top 20 (where people still get in with a 1510) or a school where a top test score is more important than everything else.
Funny D26 just got hers in the mail yesterday and it is a perfect fit too! Looks like it was made for her. Her prom is May 16. She found $30 shoes at Nordstrom Rack today which was an unexpected bonus!
I have one of those kiddos. Tested 99th%ile on all her state required standardized tests and the SAT score just didn’t jive with the rest of her academic record, GPA, etc. I know that grade inflation is wildly rampant in her school, but something just didn’t add up. She pivoted to the ACT and she scored better on the ACT than the SAT. She has one more attempt at both in April and she’s gonna call it quits.
Ok, folks, here is a new one for me. My D is applying for a summer day camp counselor job. She uploaded her resume as required, and a box popped up that said the employer may use an “AI algorithm” to review resumes and create a “profile relevancy” score (apparently by comparing the resume against job requirements). You can check a box to opt out. My D wants to know if she should opt out or not. I have absolutely no idea?!?
Ugh, can I say how much I absolutely hate this. I would also opt out of the AI screen. It seems they generally set these up to use certain keywords and if one isn’t in the application it gets screened out. Always preferable to get a human to look at the application if possible. Good luck to her!
FWIW, most companies are now using AI to screen resumes. The difference is that in theory they’re doing this through an internal AI system so that they don’t populate your data into the big systems. I think the summer camp is asking because they will put your data in a public system. So probably easier to opt out because of this. You could always ask if they’re going to use a public/open AI system. If they are, then it’s a great reason to opt out and you can tell them that. If they’re not, then your D may have a lower shot since employers want to use AI for this and they don’t seem to particularly care if the AI system isn’t perfect.
I was thinking that an opt out option is possibly because this is the first year they’re using it and want to see how well it works vs human oversight. I’ve not heard of an opt out option elsewhere? I do know more often they use it without telling the applicant.
Interesting. Yes, the way it is written, suggests an external system. For example, the notification says “this employer” rather than identifying the employer by name…
Overall, sounds like we should opt out. As a 16 year old, it is hard to imagine her resume will have a high AI score in any event.
I know someone who went to Bradley way back in the 1990’s (my best friend’s sister), and occasionally there are athletes from my kids’ high school that go there to continue playing their sport. I could ask around.
I have been to Peoria IL for a rock climbing competition (when my D26 was climbing competitively). I was actually pleasantly surprised by the downtown area. I have heard safety is mixed, but I thought it was totally fine. Found a cool independent coffee shop, etc. We were there during daytime hours.
Thank you! On paper, it offers a lot of things to attract D26 – especially since her major(s) are hard to find.
BUT, the school seems to be struggling with enrollment, and there’s been some shakeup in leadership, and they’re dropping various programs because of budget issues, etc:
I’m not sure if it’s worth pursuing or not. No one in our area has ever heard of the school. (My husband said a basketball player he liked went there many moons ago, lol.)
Prom update, we found shoes at the first store (DSW) that we tried! I was prepared for schlepping to stores all afternoon and then probably having to try online because C26, being tall, is a W10.5-11 and stores often don’t have that size in stock. (DH’s genes, not mine lol.) Well - one pair caught their eye and they had it in an 11, which fit perfectly. Some froyo to celebrate, and back home.
