Spent an hour at the DMV this afternoon to renew D26’s learner’s permit. Once we got to speak with an employee, the whole thing took less than 5 minutes. But for an hour, we cracked Zootopia and Dante’s Inferno jokes. Like, “You know, when Dante wrote Inferno and he was writing about Purgatory, this right here is what that was all about.”
Congrats! My son did COSMOS last year at UCSD and loved it! He made really good friends from all over the state. And, at Davis they are allowed to bring bikes which weren’t allowed in SD.
Though she has no interest in attending, U of R is not a school I’d let our daughter go to because of location. It’s unfortunate because the school is amazingly good in terms of education.
I was so surprised when I read some posts about the location – I’m really not familiar with Rochester at all, but I had no idea some parts of the city were so rough.
You don’t have the same concerns about RIT – right?
C26 is off to state Latin convention for the weekend and while they are there, H & I off to have a couple fun days in the Nevada desert, with some Vegas nightlife added in. Feels weird to be just the two of us going away …
My D26 would be so envious (and D22 for that matter) – their high school was small, so no JCL, thus they could never attend state convention. (Not for lack of trying, lol.) D26 is one of only two students in her current honors Latin IV class, and D22 was the only student in AP Latin her senior year. (She’s now majoring in classics and linguistics.)
Anyhow. Yay for Latin kids! And yay for a Vegas getaway for you guys. It’s been so long since we’ve gotten away that I don’t even know what we’d talk about, LOL.
I think at Davis they might be required to bring bikes! Just teasing.
Go Ags!
DS at UMich has had a great year academically. He’s slowly meeting people and getting into his favorite activities. I was nervous about him attending a large school but he’s done well. He likes his classes, classmates, and professors equally. At the same time he’s looking forward to coming home in late April.
I’ve been very impressed with the math, stats, and computer science instruction at UMich. Education has definitely changed from the old times, but it seems to be a challenging but not cutthroat environment.
No, I do not have the same concerns about RIT since it is in a suburb. Had a brother who recently retired from RIT. I used to work at UR.
Other than “do you think they’ll let me buy Claritin at the hotel store” I haven’t heard a peep from C26 all day… though I see them in some of the Latin club insta photos. I guess they’re having too much fun to text home lol.
S26 is on a school music trip, wife is surprised he isn’t sending us daily updates. I am not sure what she expected but I only foresaw a request for money if he wanted to buy something. 5 days of no parents, in a new city going to concerts and museums I’d be shocked if he even remembers our names anymore.
we did this somewhat accidentally just based on our schedule. We are touring her #1 reach school in 2 weeks. We are also seeing our state flagship that week which should be a “likely.” In the meantime, she’s been to one target school and fell in love with her safety. She now feels comfortable looking at / applying to fewer schools because she knows if she only gets into the safety she would be happy there.
With S24 we did the reaches first. Luckily it worked out for him.
I’m so sorry. We went through prom drama too. Why are girls so mean? Just include everyone! Especially in a class of 125. My D26 decided prom was over-rated after the whole ordeal. and is now more excited than ever to go to college OOS.
Same with C26. Nothing!!! I know at least they’re where they should be. Or at least, their iPhone is
Last two months of the school year are rough – esp junior year, when the pressure to finish with strong grades is intense. My D26 is currently in her room staring at her laptop and willing her brain to produce a memoir that is due in English this week. She also has to do some kind of creative project that ties in to said memoir – she’s making a YouTube video, supposedly.
She also has an AP Calc test this week, an English test (in addition to said paper/project being due), a Latin two-day PBA, and an AP Physics test on Friday. Of those, her Physics grade is the most critical.
Oh, and did I mention it’s show week? She’s in the spring play which opens on Thursday, so she’ll be at school at least until 9pm Mon through Wed, and then much later on Thursday and Friday nights.
Yesterday they had early morning play rehearsal, and it’s customary to wear pajamas to Saturday rehearsal. My D26 may have shown up like this – this is a t-shirt I bought for D22 because it made me laugh uncontrollably, but she refused to wear it because my sense of humor is weird. D26 found it hilarious and took it for herself. She also took these Darth Vader pajama pants that her dad was throwing out, which are suited to a 6-foot-tall human.
She made me promise not to post this on FB. So, I didn’t.
Bless our hardworking juniors – their schedules make me tired.
We totally get the whole pressure of finishing strong!! S26 does not do well under pressure, so the last month before the year ends, he starts flailing. It happens every year, second semester grades end up being worse than the first one, every year! He does try hard, but it is what it is. Junior year has been extra stressful. Can’t wait for it be over. Sometimes I wish end of senior year was here already, because I feel all this pressure only comes because of this whole college admissions process and the uncertainty of it. I so wish we could just skip all that.
I’m so worn out by the school year, Im hanging out in the HS class of '25 thread pretending this process is already over.
I hear ya. D26 is starting to get burned out, too. She’s looking forward to the school year being over.
Have you guys read Worst End of School Year Mom Ever by Jen Hatmaker? This is an old blog entry from 2013 when her kids were young, but I still read it every year and cry with laughter.
I swear, someone needs to write something similar for our current situation, with kids getting ready to apply to college.
Good luck with all that on the schedule! C26 is doing stagecraft run crew for the school musical so there are also a lot of 5pm-9pm commitments in the next few weeks. I’m a little worried about it because when they were in the musical in freshman year their grades tanked during that time period with assignments not being done etc. I think we have a better overall handle now than then, especially with the ADHD stuff, but I am unashamedly going to be helicopter mom during this period to make sure we don’t get a repeat at this critical time, especially given the huge improvement in grades overall that we’ve seen.
They just got back from Latin convention, exhausted but apparently had a lot of fun. I got two whole texts between last night and today in response to questions, but actually this pleases me no end because until recently this was a kid who had a lot of anxiety about being away from home. It makes me feel more confident about things going forward. Next test is the summer program, 4 weeks away from home in the dorms (but we will visit a couple of days during the weekends of those).
