Hi Parents! Thanks for starting this. For us it’s round 2, second kid. Here we go, not really ready though! Just thinking, we have to go visit some places soon. I echo chicagoshannon, S28 is very different than D25.
Good luck to all the juniors who decided to take the SAT this morning. D was nervous but calm, if that makes sense. We already signed her up again for October so that she knows it’s not one and done. Do her best, get comfortable and know she can retake.
To the question of prep she used a combo of free Bluebook (awesome), Khan (she didn’t love), UWorld ($ but very good), and we decided the last few weeks to bring in a tutor ($$$) since she was getting hung up on the same two types of problems. Lots of practice tests over the last few months.
Yes, this is a lot but for this particular kid who has a particular score in mind, it will hopefully pay off. Her reach dream school is a T20 so she knows her SAT score will be table stakes.
I’m mostly here for my D27, but also have a D28, and think this second kid will be way easier, at least if she sticks to her current ideas. She wants to study either Bio or English at a small liberal arts college that is either a women’s college or in the Pacific Northwest. And of the visits she was able to do last spring (tagging along with older kid), she liked one of the ‘safety’ schools that meets those criteria as much as the reach ones. That said, her thoughts may change by next fall.
She did try a practice SAT the other day – my D27 took her SAT in December last year and was stuck for two days in the neighboring town because of winter weather grounding the planes (common in my area), so D28 wants to get it done in October to avoid that. Hard to know what to say when she asks me what score is “good” though. I took her practice score and added what seemed like a reasonable amount to improve with practice (since she’d done none) and told her maybe that’d be something to aim for – I think if she does it will be comfortably in the range for where she’s looking.
