I’ve been under legal guardianship since I was three months old, but I have never been adopted. I have very limited contact with my biological parents my entire life (my father is an alcoholic who was in and out of prison and my mother has an abusive fiancé). I don’t know what to do. I filed FAFSA as an indep as per its guidelines, but this is tripping me up. I don’t feel comfortable contacting them nor do I think they’d be willing to share any info with me. Is there anything I can do?
If you are under legal guardianship you will answer so in the family section of the common app:
- Common app will still ask about your parent 1 and parent 2. There, you check ‘I have limited info about this parent’ and you are done. That is the only required question (denoted by a red asterisk in all sections) in each of the parent 1 and 2 sections.
2)CA will then ask for info on your legal guardian (only name and relationship to you are required).
Why have you already filed FAFSA if you haven’t yet done common app? If you are a rising HS senior, you won’t complete 2025-26 FAFSA until it opens on 10/1/24
