Parents: what is your alma mater (and did your kids go there too?)

U Oregon undergrad & UCDavis law. H went to UHawaii undergrad. I had one niece attend UO and another niece attend UCD undergrad. Our kids didn’t apply to any of our alma maters.

UNC-Chapel Hill(undergrad and pharmacy school) UCLA(Masters)
Spouse-USC(Southern Cal)
Son-Stanford
Son-Wants to attend UT-Austin

UMD CP, for both undergrad and grad, business degrees.
One son wouldn’t consider going there because it wasn’t “prestigious” enough and was too close to home/too many from HS attending.
Other son wanted to go there and is now in their business school.
He loves it, and it’s much harder to be accepted there now than when I was there.

H: UPenn
Me:USC (for two years)…graduated from UCLA
Son: got his dream job at 17…didn’t go
Daughter 1: USC (film)
Daughter 2: USC (Annenberg)

Me: Miami U of Ohio, then Tulane (master’s) with a few vagabond years in between.
DH: MIT, UCSB Tulane post-doc

We met at PJ’s coffee shop on Camp St, NOLA!

DD…too soon to know. But I think she will carve her own path. My very early prediction? Denison/Dickinson/Lafayette?

Me: Stanford
Late spouse: Stanford
D: Penn…She wouldn’t consider Stanford…wanted to get out of the “boring burbs”.

Me: Quinnipiac.

H: SCSU
D wasn’t interested-- both are too close to home, an easy commute. She felt it would be like camping in her back yard.

H and me: Hope College. After grad programs, we ended up settling in the same town as Hope, when H got a one-year appt teaching at Hope. He is now at a CC.
S1, D1, D2: Kalamazoo College. They all wanted to get out and ended up attending the same school.

Me: Smith (undergrad), Harvard (grad)
DH: Worked his way through CC and then state flagship
Kids – no interest in single -sex school (much to my chagrin and after multiple visits to Smith and MHC). One is at an Ivy, another wants a co-ed small LAC

British DH went to Cambridge. DS had no interest, and undoubtedly couldn’t have gotten in. I went to UCSB. DS applied and was accepted (and would have been happy to go there), but it fell by the wayside when he got into UCLA.

@dentmom4 They wanted to get out and all 3 went to Kalamazoo? Did they overlap? That’s funny!

Wellesley. I have a son. So much for that. University of Chicago grad school: S was admitted but chose to go elsewhere (despite it being the perfect school for him in the view of many). H went to several undergraduate schools, ultimately receiving his degree from Michigan State. Unaffordable OOS, and S had no interest. S had no interest in H’s grad school: NYU Stern.

@HRSMom . No, they did not overlap. S1 '09. D1 '16, D2 '20. They have an uncommon last name, so profs know they are related. All very different majors. An hour away from us.

Loyola Marymount University. Both kids looked at it, S applied as a backup but it was never really a contender. I didn’t mind, I was (and still am) very happy with their choices.

Ex-H and I both went to Michigan. Both kids ended up at LACs. Partly because I steered them that way; my large university experience was not ideal.

H & I both went to PSU. We moved out of state after graduation and ended up in Texas. If S wants huge public school he can go in-state to UT Austin which is much better known for his intended major (CS). He has expressed zero interest in PSU and we don’t even bring it up to him. H & I both had good experiences at PSU, but not so good that we think it’s worth paying OOS price to send S there.

Me-Dominican University of California. H-Brown University (undergrad), Harvard (grad school), Columbia (Med school). Oldest daughter not interested in any of our schools. She has already been accepted at a few schools, waiting to hear from the UC’s.

My DH attended a SUNY. I worked my way through college and attended a cc, Long Island University, and Marist before getting my degree from a SUNY. The total process took 9 years. I’m currently attending a cc to do the prerqs for my master’s, but I don’t know where I’ll go to for that. Our local SUNY is much cheaper than the private universities in our area, but I got my bachelor’s there (in a different field) many years ago so I’m not sure if I should get my master’s there too.

Our son is attending the SUNY I graduated from because he loves Downstate NY (easy access to both the City and mountains) and plans to live there after he graduates. He considered Marist but didn’t like the price tag.

Our daughter is dyslexic, dyscalculic, and dysgraphic, so we’re not sure where she’ll end up. Because we homeschool, test optional isn’t available to us. Right now she’s considering the SUNY I attended because she’s a swimmer and they have a team. If our local cc had a pool, she’d probably be happy to start there and compete in USA swim meets as an independent. Both my kids are pretty flexible.

I went to Towson University . My son attends The Honors College at College of Charleston as a William Aiken Fellow.

I went to Northwestern, my H went to UW-Madison. S1 went to UChicago, S2 to Wash U, and D (denied at my alma mater) went to UChicago (twice, she just got her JD there, too), as well.
