For undergrad, I went to Bowling Green State University. My kids had no interest!
U of Colorado Boulder. Only school I forbid S to apply to. He had no interest so it was all good.
I loved it there because I loved to party and Boulder was a cool place to be.
Indiana University undergrad/ UChicago law. Both applied to IU but neither went. It was probably my daughter’s 2nd choice (for music) but she got into her first choice. Son applied to Chicago both as a freshman and as a transfer but ultimately stayed at his ED school.
D flatly refused to consider either my alma mater (Hollins) or H’s (Rice).
Claremont McKenna, which was out of the question for both kids due to lack of a fencing team.
Same deal, emilybee, except I had gone to RPI. No way in h-e-double hocky sticks were they even allowed to apply. As West coasters now, very little back east was on their radar.
I would not have wanted S1 to go to BGSU. I also have degrees from Syracuse and NYU, so there is still a shot:)
Ohio University for undergrad. DD did applied to professional school there but is attending elsewhere.
DH went to U of Hartford. Son applied to and was accpted at the Hartt School…but went elsewhere.
San Diego State University, my daughter applied as a back up but has no real interest in going there. She thinks it’s beneath her since in my day it was known as a party school, honestly her weighted 4.0 is right in line with their admission stats these days, it’s gotten so much more competitive.
Texas A&M for DH and I. No chance that DS17 would be interested. I went because it was a full-ride, and I needed that in order to go to college. Luckily, he has options.
Douglass College (of Rutgers University).
By the time my girls were ready to look at colleges, Douglass College no longer existed. It is now merely a residential campus that is part of Rutgers University.
My husband attended Rutgers and it was not a good fit for any of our children.
UT-Austin (surprise). DS matriculated there but had to drop out after he was diagnosed with schizophrenia. My other two kids didn’t have the stats to get in there.
@MomofWildChild, I went to Chicago for grad school. I’d have had no problem if S was interested in that school.
I also went to Syracuse for grad school as did H. S had no interest in SU either.
@Magnetron, I live in the area and Troy has gotten much better the last few years. It having a renaissance. Weather still sucks, and it’s still hilly, though.
Princeton, and D is a freshman there now. I loved it and she seems exceptionally happy as well.
<— Loyola Chicago for undergrad, Southern Illinois for law school
They have no interest in going to either, and I have no interest in sending them to either.
DH went to UCSB for a grad degree in physics. We’d be fine with DS17 going there–his planned major is also physics. It’s a little too close to home to be at the top of DS’ list, however.
Cornell.
My daughter went there, too.
My son wouldn’t have gone there if it was the last college on Earth.
They both made good decisions. They’re very different people, and they needed different things from their colleges.
I, my siblings, and my ex-h’s siblings all received undergrad degrees from UW-Madison. None of the children went there. My ex-h received his undergrad from the University of Chicago. My younger daughter was accepted there but attended elsewhere.
Smith (undergrad); NYU (business school). DD wouldn’t consider Smith; DS couldn’t. She did apply to Wm & Mary (where I got in but didn’t matriculate); ended up not going there either. Trying not to take it personally
Oberlin (undergrad) for me, Princeton (undergrad) for DH. We met in grad school at UCLA. Neither of our kids had any interest in leaving California, so didn’t consider the colleges we went to for undergrad. DS went to Stanford and DD is a freshman at UCLA.
