Parents: what is your alma mater (and did your kids go there too?)

Me-- Michigan in Ann Arbor --from outofstate. Unfortunately I can’t afford to send my kids there even though they both got accepted there. The tuition for out of state is so high $45,000 (and it increases each year) plus with room and board it’s about $57,000 cost of attendance per year. We don’t qualify for need-based aid and Michigan does not give a lot of merit aid. Son was offered zero merit with his high stats. However, he attends Michigan’s arch nemesis Ohio State, proving that imitation is the greatest form of flattery! Ohio State has a lot of the same as Michigan–large research university, good honors program, modern and renovated facilities, great academics, tons of course offerings, great Big 10 sports teams and a lot of school spirit and also a large fun Greek system. And at half the price, because Ohio State offers great merit aid (National Buckeye plus Maximus or Provost or trustee on top of that) to attract high stat out of state kids like my own, who would rather attend there than a SUNY. Go Blue! But Go Bucks too!!

My mom went to Kent State, and my dad didn’t go. My sister is at a SUNY, and I’m considering a few colleges (currently a junior) and Kent is one of them.

Me: Williams, Husband: Vassar
Son: junior in high school, remains to be seen what he will choose. We are beginning to tour colleges now. It looks like he may like similar types of schools, but whether he will pick one of ours or another school remains to be seen. And, as we’ll also look at a couple of larger schools, maybe even the type of school he likes will change. We loved our colleges, but it’s up to him what he wants. And admissions are harder now than when we went, even though his SAT and grades are better than ours were.

Me: UG: Rutgers, NB. Grad: U of M, Ann Arbor.
DH: UG and grad in Europe

Neither D was/is interested a big uni. Eldest ended up at a small, rural LAC that very nurturing. Seeing that experience compared to my own makes me want that for my other kids even though it could mean giving up some of the opportunities a bigger school offers.

Next one wants similar, so Rutgers and U of M are out.

My third child has talked about Rutgers so it might happen. I don’t see it as the best choice for that particular child. She’s the one who really needs nurturing.

I actually had a good academic experience at Rutgers but it was a poor quality of life. I don’t want that for my kids.

I went to San Diego State University and my H did his masters there (that’s how we met).
Oldest D is getting her teaching credential at SDSU now, but did undergrad elsewhere.
Youngest D applied and was accepted, but chose to attend UCSD instead.

It was a great school for me especially since H and I stayed in San Diego. I have worked with many people that also graduated from the business program there and there is a lot of networking with SDSU alumni here.

Me: Reed BA; UC Berkeley JD
Wife: Kentucky BA; Purdue MA; Texas JD
D: Dartmouth BA; UC Berkeley PhD program

Me - a CUNY school because I couldn’t even afford a SUNY back in the 70’s. Small, local law school.

H - began at a different CUNY, transferred to Stony Brook, same law school that I attended.

Kids: 2 at local CC, both dropped out. D - a different SUNY, graduated with a masters. Middle son attends the same SUNY.

I never considered sending my kids to either of the CUNY’s we went to. They have very little dorming and neither is in a great area. We took the kids to see Stony Brook. Two of the boys would not even get out of the car to go on the tour because they found the surroundings so hideous.

Youngest boy is applying now. None of our alma maters is a fit for him because of his intended major nor is my D’s SUNY, which is sad because I love that school.

The wouldn’t get out if the car? Wow. That’s a pretty strong opinion!

Accounts I’ve heard from Stonybrook alums wasn’t that the campus was “hideous”, but that campus life was dead on college weekends because it was a “suitcase school” and there wasn’t much to do off-campus because of its location in an upper-middle class residential area.

Me and H: UofSC honors, me also UofSC for grad school, and H UofSC Law school
D1: Washington & Lee, UofSC masters.
D2: UofSC honors, Yale masters. D2 actually stayed in same historic Horseshoe building in the apartment next to one I lived in.
