Parents won't allow me to do research abroad

My parents won’t allow me to go into Manila to do research on prostitution because as they say, I could get kidnapped or killed anytime (apparently, they foiled a kidnapping plot when I was a kid and still living there). The situation there right now is near-chaos with the majority of people living in poverty and acting based on short-term needs with no regard to justice (oftentimes, the police actually work with criminals). How could I ever go back and avoid being harmed? Would the situation be the same in Bangkok? New Delhi? FYI, I used to live in a hub for male prostitution (the area I want to study), so maybe it was a little more sketchy there, but the richer areas are supposedly not safe either. What do I do? I feel like if I don’t take the risk, I could miss out on a subject that could very well be my life’s work.

You just need to ask yourself if you will benefit from it greatly. Will seeing all this help you? You should go with people you know to be more safer maybe? The majority of people getting kidnapped though are little girls that are put into the prostitution ring, and I don’t think they’ll be looking for(HOW old are you?) you.

Main thing though, just don’t look like a tourist, that attracts attention because then they think you have money.I think you’ll be fine, but just bring people with you to be safe.

if ur parents dont allow…and u end up not being able to…then do a research on this topic! (i know its the lamest comment u’ll ever read in CC :p) hahaha.

how do you manage to get yourself into all these awesome situations…?

first the homeless guy, now the prostitution

you live a really interesting life :D

the phillipines is a crazy place… i had a lot of filipino friends in high school.

No no no no no. Your parents worked their asses off to get out of there, why the hell would you want to go back? Why not go somewhere nice, with a beach? Maybe Cebu?

You don’t go to Manila, you pass through it.

I’ve been to the Manila twice. The first time, my uncle gave my dad a pistol. The second time, he gave me the pistol. It’s not a nice place.

This is the city that gave birth to the methods your dad used to beat you with.
