My parents don’t believe in SAT II’s and refuse to pay. What should I do?? I’m still a junior, so there’s plenty of time, but they are still stuck in the mindset of their country (india) where you just take one test at the end of your senior year and that determines the rest of the life. The say that having SAT II’s makes the testing process to extensive and they say they won’t support it by letting me take them. I have cash that I have saved from when I was like 6, but CB wants only checks and money orders. What should I do?!?!

You can get a friend who has a credit card to help you out. I do it all the time with online purchases lol

Umm…
Have you taken SATs? Do you plan on comming to an American school?.. Just let your parents see that you need the SAT IIs if you are.

Here are some possibilities:
Have an adult or friend with a credit card help you with that. Your Counselor might be willing.
Take the ACT…for many places it suffices instead of SATI and II
Get applications on line from the schools you might want to go to, show these to your parents so they can see the requirements.

More importantly, have a very serious discussion with your parents now, rather than later, about how much money they are willing to pay for college in general. If they are being very specific about this, they probably will be very firm in general about costs. You have to know this in advance.

They said that the path that I’m on I’m going straight to prison and so there’s no need to waste money :(

aww, maybe you can get a teacher from your school to sing your praises and tell them how much you need to take sats and sat2s. im sure theyll come along.

lol ccerforlife, what did u do that made them so mad?

CC:

download the Berkeley app, or other well known school (comparable to IIT) and show them where it requires SAT I plus two SAT II’s (for entering class of '06).

We have to note: some parents are very unreasonable and are not open to arguments from the student. I would definitely get someone from school, esp. a guidance counsoler, to vouch on your behalf. Definitely show your teachers that you are motivated. It will help gain their sympathy: seriously, I think they would be sympathetic to someone whose parents are denying them a chance to a good college.

I’ve had experiences like this before, and know about how unwilling some parents are willing to listen to arguments. Don’t just assume that all parents are willing to listen to arguments: remember that there are parents who are so conservative that they don’t even understand the benefits of college.

“…but CB wants only checks and money orders.”

If nothing else works out, you can easily get a money order at any post office or bank (I’m pretty sure) or even at some gas stations. You just give them your cash, they’ll take a small percentage of commission, and give you a money order.

But yeah, I agree with the other guys, definitely talk to your teachers and counselor first.

say to your parents that you want to retake the sat but sign up for the sat 2’s its as simple as that…ta da

no offense but your parents are morons, seriously how ■■■■■■■■ can they be?

tell your counselor to speak to your parents, it’s an effective way!

Yea I get money orders all the time from the post office (when buying/selling on ebay). Just show your parents all the apps you have that say requires sat II’s or print out a list of all the schools that do. It might make for a more convincing argument if they say lots of schools require/recommend them, then say one prestigious school requiring them.

I really dont understand why some parents wont pay less than 50 bucks for their kids to take tests. These tests are very important to the child’s future. Most parents would be paying 1000+ and begging their kids to take lessons.

I showed them the apps. and showed them my practice scores on 4 different SAT II’s from the 22 Reals and I only missed 3 questions out of all 4 of them so they signed me up for Math, Chemistry (might switch to Writing??), and Physics in Jan. Showing them the apps was the greatest idea. Thanks guys.

P.S. Do you know where I can get a Writing Essay read? Can you go to the nearby PR office and pay them some money to grade you or something?

I’m glad it worked! I think getting one of your English teachers to help you would be a smart idea. They will be able to tell you your weak and strong points. Good Luck ![]()

cc,
if you will be taking the new SAT it will have writing on it. If you did that well on the maths, chemistry and physics, take the test while all that knowledge is firmly in your head! Good luck on the test and good job on the parent manipulation!

haha cc, im indian too, sounds like the classic argument with an indian parent. by any chance, that jail reference, was it thanks to the simple fact that you were arguing with them?

lol, dude, im indian as well, i know what you’re talking about…even though my parents have lived here for 20 years, they still don’t get the sat’s…they didnt even know what sat 2’s were…well, they paid for mine, but with college stuff, they wanted me to apply to like 25 schools (didn’t realize each one had a different essay!)…talk to your counselor
