I will be attending Stanford as a graduate student starting in the Fall, and I will be commuting. I saw that there are two different parking permit types: A (~$620/year) and C (~$240/year). Is a type-A permit worth the extra cost? How is the parking situation in general - how long is the walk to classes, and how does the permit type affect this?

If it helps, I’m a computer science major, so I would ideally want easy access to Gates and surrounding buildings.

There’s two parking lots near gates. One is in the Oval area, and I’m pretty sure those are all A permits. The other is the Marguerite headquarters, which is a bit further away, and I doubt that would be an A permit. Oh there’s also the parking near Y2E2, but that’s a pain to access imo.

The main reason people get A is that the lots nearest to the residences are almost all A-type. If you’re commuting, the differences between C and A probably aren’t worth the cost. Also, A is only enforced 6am-4pm M-F whereas C is enforced 24/7.
