Parkland College and Transferring

I will most likely be attending Parkland College starting this summer and would like to know what the most important things to do to improve my chances of transferring to one of the universities that I will list below.

Obviously, the most important things are taking the required and recommended courses for transfer and I’m confident in my ability to pull a 4.0 in those courses while I’m at Parkland but what other things should I be doing to improve my chances?

Where I’m interested in transferring to:
UCs (Berkeley, UCLA, SD, or SB)
NYU

I’m interested in studying either Computer Science or Electrical Engineering (most of the prerequisites, at least at the UCs) are the same for both so that works out.

Thanks in advance!

Hello there, I was a California community college student who transferred to Cornell University. Below are some of the key steps for me.

You mentioned taking the required courses- if you haven’t already, check out assist.org. I believe you are out of state, but you can still go and see what the exact requirements are for your specific major.

It’s very important to start thinking about your story early on. Your personal statement will be very important so start thinking about the stories you want to tell (not laundry list of what you did). Everything you do and are involved with should be something you really enjoy or something you are very passionate about. Be committed to excelling or doing your best at something. Keep track (or a mental note) of those experiences that have helped you grow.

Learn everything about the schools and programs you are applying to. Rather than sending out a generic application to everyone, show why you belong at each specific school you are applying to. What classes do you want to take there? What clubs will you join? What experiences and character will you bring to that university that will make it a better campus?

Stay positive and just do it! If you have any questions just shoot me an email, I’m glad to help: melba@transferhero.com
